COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 37, BENSALEM 6
The Golden Hawks made their Senior Night a special one for the team’s 22 seniors, opening up a 24-0 halftime lead and rolling to the decisive win.
“They’re a really good group,” Rock South coach CJ Szydlik said of the senior class. “They’re a resilient group. Obviously, they’ve been through a lot. It’s hard for a kid to buy in knowing he’s only going to be here for a little bit when there’s a new staff and there’s new stuff going on.
“To their credit, they have, and it’s shown. That’s why we’re sitting with four wins now and hopefully can go next week against (Council Rock) North and get number five.”
The Golden Hawks led 9-0 after one quarter and upped that lead in the second quarter.
“We got going really just running the football straight ahead,” Szydlik said. “Instead of trying to be fancy with everything, we said – we’re going to line up and here we come, and we’re going to try and figure it out from there. It did get the kids going, and the kids responded really well.”
Rock South’s offensive explosion was especially welcome after back-to-back shutout losses, and the Golden Hawks’ coach had plenty of praise to go around.
“Jake Zarnowsky played really well for us – caught a couple of really nice passes,” Szydlik said. “We were able to run the football tonight. After struggling the last two weeks, we kind of got some things straightened out.
“Chase Myers and Nick Diaz ran really hard for us today, which then opened things up for Jake Zarnowsky to be open on some play action passes. We were finally able to complement our defense which has been playing really well all season.”
Rock South was coming off losses to a pair of teams that are undefeated in conference play in Souderton (23-0) and Upper Dublin
(16-0).
“We played two really good teams two weeks in a row,” Szydlik said. “Bensalem was right on the same level as we are, and we were finally able to put something together, separate ourselves a little bit.”
The Golden Hawks’ first-year coach also lauded the play of his defense.
“For us defensively, Connor Omlor and Joe Fortunato lead our football team,” Szydlik said. “We had some really nice play from our defensive backs, Danny Boss and Jake Hemple, who are both juniors.
“It’s tough on Senior Night. Some of those guys don’t get to play as much. The rest of the seniors came in and got some really good minutes and played really hard.
Council Rock South (4-5, 2-3 SOL) will host Council Rock North in the annual Rock Cup game next Friday. Bensalem (2-7, 1-4) will host Souderton next Friday.
