Nine SOL girls’ basketball team will be in action when the District One 6A Tournament begins Friday. For Hatboro-Horsham, this is the program’s first trip to the postseason in 15 years.
“Back in October, we really didn’t know what our team would look like,” HH coach Dennis Steinly said. “Alice Hall was coming off shoulder surgery and the timeline for her return was somewhere in December or January, but she worked really hard, and her rehab was ahead of schedule so she was cleared to play a week before practice began. She did not play competitive basketball since June, so it was going to take time for her to work her way back.
“We brought in a lot of new faces – many of whom hadn’t played basketball in a couple of years. Our first scrimmage against Jenkintown was the first time this team played competitive basketball together. We play in a very tough league, and our non-league schedule was fairly competitive.”
Six of eight of the Hatters’ non-league opponents are competing in the postseason, and after starting the season 0-2 in the Hatters’ own tipoff tournament, the Hatters won seven of their next eight games.
Steinly credits the team’s six seniors – Hallie Anderson, Cam Ryan, Graceanne Griffis, Sydney Kemp, Jada Mills and Rickelle Wescott – for playing a major role in the team’s growth this season.

We didn’t end the season as strong as we wanted to, but that is the best thing about the postseason – everyone has the same record. We haven’t been to the playoffs in three years and it’s been longer than that since the program won a (district) game. So this is a great opportunity and experience for our girls. We have had girls from all four grade levels contributing throughout the year so we need to keep building off that and give our best overall team effort in the postseason.”

Our offense has been firing on all cylinders and we’re playing our best defense of the season. I think Bensalem is better than their record indicates. All coaches hope to have their team playing its best basketball this time of year, and I believe we are in that position. The results of our last five games may not show it, but statistically, we are playing at our highest level of the season. We are assisting on 75 percent of our field goals. Defensively, our rebounding is much better, and we are forcing over 20 turnovers per game.
“WC Rustin is a very good team – they play unselfishly on offense, so we will need all five players alert. They are a well-balanced team. Defensively, Rustin will press full court, and their half-court defense is team-oriented. They don’t have a lot of size, but they play with a lot of heart and compete for 32 minutes. They really get after you and there is no quit in their approach.”
