SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 50, WISSAHICKON 45
The Spartans and visiting Trojans battled to an 18-18 halftime tie, but the Spartans seized control of the game with a 16-7 third quarter burst. They outscored the Trojans 32-27 in a high-scoring second half.
Sparking the Spartans once again were Molly Dugan and Maura Ryan.
“Molly and Maura had a very strong night tonight,” coach Bill Krewson said.
Dugan led all scorers with 28 points, which included a remarkable 19-for-20 effort at the foul line.
“That’s a spectacular thing,” Krewson said. “Teams have been trying to shut her down, and I’ve been moving her around all over the place.
“She’s been spectacular. She’s been fighting hard, and no matter what the situation is, she’s playing hard. She is a very basketball-minded kid, and I can use her at any position. I can just look at her, and she knows what to do. That’s the wonderful thing about Molly.”
Ryan added 13 points and was a dominant force in the paint on the defensive end.
“Maura must have blocked 10-12 shots tonight,” Krewson said. “She really came up with some big layups and made baskets at the end.
“Those two really put us out in front tonight.”
While Dugan and Ryan stole the spotlight, they weren’t the only players to contribute.
“Our freshmen are doing a super job of stepping up – they’ve been starters since day one almost,” Krewson said of Grace Barraclough and Siana Wynn. “Emily Giampietro was steady at the point tonight, and coming off the bench, we had Bri Vetter, Sharyn Wilson and Jamison Krewson.
“I appreciate the team effort and the fact that they’re playing with a lot of joy and love for one another.”
Barraclough added seven points to the Spartans’ attack.
For the Trojans, Brianna Tilghman (18 points) and Daria Earland (16 points) turned in impressive performances.

Continental Conference
HATBORO-HORSHAM 48, SOUDERTON 40
SOL wins have been few and far between for the Hatters in recent years with just three conference wins in the last two-and-a-half seasons. On Thursday night, the Hatters picked up their first conference win of the season when they defeated the visiting Indians.
“What a great night,” Hatters’ coach Kathie Sims said. “For our program, it means that we are headed in the right direction, one step at a time.
“For the girls, it’s a confidence builder and payoff for all of their hard work.”
Cassidy Quattro had a huge night for the Hatters, finishing with an impressive double-double – 15 points and 11 rebounds. Haley Seifert also delivered under the boards, pulling down a team high 13 rebounds to go along with six points.
Erin Wingen came up big on the offensive end with 13 points, and Bergen Sims was a defensive force with a team high five steals to go along with seven points and seven rebounds.
“The girls played awesome, and our defense was outstanding,” coach Sims said. “(Bergen) played
unbelievable defense. They all played up to their potential.”
The Indians led 7-5 after one quarter and took an 18-15 lead into halftime, but the Hatters doubled their first half output with 17 points in the third quarter to go on top 32-29. The Indians knotted the score 34-34, but not for long. A basket by Quattro and a pair of Seifert foul shots gave the Hatters a 38-34 lead, and when Wingen connected, the Hatters led by six. The Indians never could make up the ground they lost, and the big win was in the books for the Hatters.
Alana Cardona led the Indians with 15 points, and Marissa Sandone added seven while Tori Dowd chipped in with six.
The Hatters buried 14-of-19 from the foul line while the Indians were 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.
The Hatters’ last three wins in conference play have all been over Quakertown, and Thursday’s win over Souderton was the Hatters’ first over a team other than the Panthers since they defeated Pennridge 58-56 on Dec. 21, 2012.
Hatboro-Horsham will face Truman in Saturday’s SOL Challenge at Council Rock North (12 noon). Souderton also will make the trip to CR North on Saturday to face the host Indians at 3 p.m.

NORTH PENN 47, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 36
Central Bucks South went into halftime on the short end of a 27-20 score, and if the visiting Titans pinned their hopes of a comeback on a fast start in the third quarter, those thoughts were put to rest rather quickly.
Irisa Ye turned a steal into a tough transition basket to up the Lady Knights’ lead to nine, and after a South miss, the Lady Knights delivered a play that suggested this would not be the Titans’ night.
It happened when Sam Carangi somehow saved an errant pass from crossing the end line and found teammate Mikaela Giuliani under the basket for a three-point play and a 32-20 North Penn lead.
“Honestly, I thought it was going out of bounds when I saw it, but then I saw I could get to it, so I ran and jumped and tried to save it,” Carangi said.
“I think that was the epitome of the kids tonight,” coach Maggie deMarteleire said of Carangi’s remarkable save. “I think their effort tonight was just outstanding.”
The Titans didn’t go down quietly, trimming the Lady Knights’ lead to five (34-29) when Meghan Kuypers buried a three early in the fourth quarter. It was still a 40-35 game after Jordan Vitelli scored on a drive midway through the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as the Titans would get the rest of the way. The Lady Knights stretched their final margin of victory to 11 by connecting on 4-of-4 from the foul line in the final minute of the game.
“They’re a very good team,” Carangi said. “They forced us into a lot of turnovers. We had 12 turnovers in the first quarter.
“Even in the fourth quarter, we still had a lot of turnovers. They’re a good defensive team, they’re fundamentally sound, and they’ll hit threes – even when we’re guarding them, so we know we have to be smarter and take our opportunities when we get them.”
The Lady Knights – sparked by three-pointers from Carangi, Jess Huber and Mia Melchior – led 12-8 after one quarter and took a seven-point lead into halftime. In the half, Huber led the way with nine points while Mikaela Giuliani added six. The Titans threatened but never could dig their way out of their early hole.
“I thought we played very good defense,” deMarteleire said. “We started out trying to mix up our defenses, but (Taylor) Dunn hit a couple of shots, and then we just decided to go to straight up man.
“I thought Irisa (Ye) did a really nice job on Jordan (Vitelli), and I thought we did a really great job of defensive rebounding. They had a lot of offensive rebounds against us the first time, and I thought we really improved on that.”
The Lady Knights box score underscored the team’s remarkable balance. Ye and Giuliani led the way with 10 points each while Huber added nine, Carangi, seven, and Hewlett, six.
For the Titans, Dunn had a game high 11 points. No other player had more than five.
The Titans trailed the Lady Knights by just one game entering Thursday’s contest. North Penn now has a two-game lead in the race for the SOL Continental’s top spot.
“It’s a very big win,” Carangi said. “If we would have lost to them, we would have had to share first place, so we knew we had to come in here and take care of business.”
The win gives the Lady Knights a sweep of their season series with the Titans.
“Honestly, I don’t know if we’ve ever beaten them twice in a year,” deMarteleire said. “It’s a nice rivalry between the two of us.
“I think Beth (Mattern) does a great job. Their kids always play so hard – they’re so aggressive. It’s a really good win for us.”
North Penn (12-2, 8-0 SOL) will face Upper Dublin in Saturday’s SOL Challenge at Central Bucks East (1 p.m.). Central Bucks South (10-4, 6-2) will travel to Abington for a 12:30 p.m. contest Saturday.
