SOL non-league crossover
BENSALEM 54, WILLIAM TENNENT 44
In a battle of two teams vying for positioning in the District 1 6A rankings, it was the visiting Owls notching the non-league crossover win.
Tennent – behind six points from Megan Volz – led 14-8 after one quarter. Grace McShane kept the Owls in it with all eight of her team’s points in the quarter. The Owls found their offensive stride in the second quarter, outscoring their hosts 18-6 to go into halftime with a 26-20 advantage. McShane’s 17 points led the Owls in the half.
The two teams exchanged baskets in the third quarter, and the Owls – who connected on 6 of 6 at the foul line in the fourth – outscored Tennent 14-9 in the fourth quarter.
Key players: Grace McShane led all scorers with 27 points. She had eight of her team’s points in the final quarter, including a 2-for-2 effort at the line. Jordyn Bell added nine points on three 3-pointers, and Mischa Ellzy had eight points.
For the Panthers. Carissa Malpezzi was the top scorer with 14 points. Megan Volz and Hanna Wong both had eight points.
Bensalem coach Steve Johnson:
–The game: “Coming into this game, we had the utmost respect for Tennent. (Avery) Kocur and (Halie) Staub have been huge for them this season and their four years with the program. They have a great team and really have five players that can hurt you offensively. Malpezzi had herself a game.
“I think we played a strong team game. To start things off, our bench energy was tremendous. Our JV team helped us win this game just as much as our varsity girls did.”
–Props: “Grace has been scoring the ball at such a high clip for us this year. Watching her grow into the player she is now has been amazing. She is aggressive when she has to be but also gets her teammates involved.
“Mischa (Ellzy) and Mary (Beck) did a fabulous job on the defensive end for us. Jordyn (Bell) shot the ball great from the outside for us tonight when we needed it the most, and Sydney Daut continued her strong rebounding for us. Kamiya (Alexander) played strong minutes for us and had three timely assists.
“I’m counting my blessings with this group because they truly embody what it means to be a team player and put the team over themselves. When things aren’t going our way, they don’t fold. They don’t care who gets the credit. It’s a beautiful thing”

–The game: “Tough loss tonight. Despite getting out to great start the first quarter, it just felt like we were in an uphill battle all game. Our offensive execution was poor, and we took too many ill-advised shots. It was also our third game in four days, and unfortunately, I think it caught up to us. Especially down the stretch when we got it to six with about three minutes to go.
“Coming into tonight, I was worried about how we would respond from last night’s tough loss to Pennsbury. On top of it, Bensalem has been playing well lately, and Grace McShane is an extremely talented player that we knew would be a challenge to contain. Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough to slow her down and she made us pay.
We need to make sure we correct our mistakes the next few days and get ourselves back on track so we can have a strong finish to the season.”
–Props: “I’m really happy and proud of Carissa for her performance tonight. She’s such a great kid who works extremely hard. She’s been a little frustrated lately with her offense, but I thought she stepped up in a big way tonight. In a game where our leading scorers struggled to get going, she picked us up and made an impact on both ends of the floor.”

UPPER DUBLIN 52, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 48
There are no secrets when Upper Dublin and CB East meet.
The perennial SOL powers – ranked one and two in the District 1 6A rankings – have faced each other regularly in recent years – three times last year. It figured to be another good game, and it did not disappoint.
UD led 13-10 after one quarter, but the Patriots used a 20-point second quarter to take a 30-22 lead into halftime. In the quarter, East point guard Haley Moran had eight points and Natalie Berndt had six on a pair of 3s.
The tide turned in a third quarter that saw the Cardinals go on a 17-7 tear, a run that was highlighted by eight points from Megan Ngo and seven from Tamia Clark. UD took a 39-37 lead into the fourth quarter and held on for the win.
Triumph in Recovery: Friday’s game honored Triumph in Recovery, the non-profit for survivors of traumatic brain injuries that was started by East volunteer coach Ron Chiarolanza’s son Tim following an accident in 2021 that saw him suffer a traumatic brain injury.
“This is year two we’ve done this, and credit to Upper Dublin for supporting it as well and buying warmup shirts for their whole program,” East coach Liz Potash said.
Tim Chiarolanza was given a one percent chance of survival after his accident. He is using his experience to help others do the same.

Key players: The Cardinals were led by the 18-point effort of Megan Ngo. Tamia Clark and Emelia Coleman both had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
For the Patriots, Haley Moran led the way with 18 points while Natalie Berndt had 10. Payton Williams had nine points, and Jess Lockwood added seven points and nine rebounds.
Upper Dublin coach Morgan Funsten:
–The game: “We were definitely challenged. We had just played Pennsbury Tuesday, and I thought they just out-hustled us to everything. We came away with the win, and we were happy, but at the same time, I challenged our girls’ toughness. We had a couple good practices leading up to today, and I thought the story of the game was hustle points. We had 20 offensive rebounds today, which was by far our high of the year, and you’re only getting offensive rebounds if you’re hustling.
“In the second quarter, we shot 3-for-15, and they shot 9-for-13. We were winning at the end of the first quarter, and then we’re down eight at halftime. We got outscored 20-9 in the second quarter, and I honestly didn’t think we were playing that poorly offensively other than missing shots. I thought we were getting good shots, I thought we were making good decisions, and they were just out of their mind on fire on offense, and it wasn’t even that we were horrible on defense. I thought we played great.”
–The turning point: “We shot the ball really poorly the entire night. We were 3-for-22 from 3-point range, but the game turned in the third quarter. We were down eight at halftime. We were still down eight with about three-and-a-half minutes to go in the third quarter. We had three straight possessions where we just kept missing and missing, but we kept getting the rebounds, and then eventually, we scored. We scored on each of the possessions. So, it went from down eight to up two going into the fourth quarter. We finished the third quarter on a 10-0 run. So the game absolutely changed there. It was good to make a run on several different hustle plays.
“We got some separation in the fourth, but CB East continued to battle back. Haley Moran – she’s like a highlight reel with the finishes she has. I thought Tamia did a pretty good job on her, but Haley improves every time I see her.”
–Props “I thought Lexi Ngo was all over it. She grabbed a couple offensive rebounds – like diving out of bounds. She was so important for us tonight. Megan (Ngo) and Tamia (Clark) got hot in the third quarter. They combined for 15 of our 17 points in the third quarter, capped off by a 3 by Meg to finally give us a lead towards the end of the third quarter.
“I thought our rebounding in general was the difference. I don’t know if I’ve ever had two players with a double-double. Tamia had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Emelia Coleman had 11 points and 10 rebounds, the exact same line.
“Everybody contributed, and it was an exciting game. Obviously, we’re excited to escape with a win.”
Up next: Upper Dublin will be on the road at Audenried Charter Saturday (6pm), capping a long week that began with Imhotep last Saturday.
“Then we were on the road at Pennsbury Tuesday and on the road at CB East, and we’re finishing down in Philly tomorrow night, so we faced a lot of adversity this week,” Funstean said. “That was the idea behind our schedule, and there’s one last test this week.”

The Titans celebrated their four seniors – Jules and Gabby Tropea, Riley Campbell and Anna Granito – with a win over the visiting Panthers, and the four of them combined for 25 of their team’s 29 first-half points in the decisive win.
Jules Tropea’s 12 points led a balanced attack. Rylie DiCesare and Gabby Tropea both had eight points.

–Seniors honored: “Tonight we celebrated our seniors, and I was excited that we had such a team effort tonight. Quakertown played hard for four quarters, but our team was led by the play of our seniors. All four – Riley Campbell, Anna Granito, Gabby Tropea, and Jules Tropea – set the tone and were leaders on the court.”

The Bucks found themselves on the short end of a 9-2 score after one quarter and still trailed 23-14 at halftime. The second half was another story entirely as the Bucks outscored their visitors 19-7 in the third quarter and 33-14 in the second half.
Key players: Marleigh Mallon’s 17 points led the Bucks and included four 3-pointers. She kept her team afloat with nine first-half points. Amber Madden and Evelyn Moore both had 11 points. Madden scored nine of her 11 in the second half while Moore had 10 in the second half – eight in the pivotal third quarter.
For the Trojans, Katelyn Thomson and Kai Potter both had 11 points while Maura Jacob had 10. The trio combined for 20 of their team’s 23 first-half points.
Central Bucks West coach Sydney Ott:
–The game: “Despite a slow start and some early errors, we worked to get back to the way we play. The second half we chipped away two points at a time.”
–Props: “Our girls worked very hard in the second half, and they rewarded themselves by knocking down shots. Starting with Amber Madden and Evelyn Moore who hit some clutch shots for us in the second half. Marleigh Mallon helped keep the offense flowing for us in each quarter, and Scarlett Baumgardner sealed the deal with knocking down foul shots late in the game – it was a nice birthday win for her and overall a good team win.”

The Hatters took a 19-18 lead into halftime, but the Rams came out of halftime on fire, outscoring their visitors 18-6 on their way to the non-league road win.
Key players: Madison Lapp’s 14 points led the Lady Rams while Ari Lauf added 12, and Julia Lenox had 10. Lauf scored eight of her points in the second half.
For the Hatters, Angelica Visceglia led the way with 13 points – 10 in the first half – while Sarah Gleason had 12.
Pennridge coach Jason Rapp:
–The game: “Great team win by the girls tonight. I thought it was our best defensive effort of the year.
“We got off to a pretty good start offensively in the first quarter and jumped out to a quick lead, but Hatboro battled back and took the lead at the half.
“In the third quarter, we came out pretty aggressive. We were able to turn them over a few times and convert in transition which gave us the lead going into the fourth.
“Hatboro plays extremely hard. They’re well coached. They’re very good defensively, and we were able to hang on to get a win tonight.”
–Props: “Kudos to some of our players: Madison Lapp was excellent tonight. She took care of the ball and was great offensively
“Ari Lauf played her best game of the season with 12 points and was great on the glass.
“Jules Lenox added 10 points and did a nice job defending.
“Megan Moylan and Sam Murphy did an awesome job defending and rebounding.
“Our freshman, Reese Hopkins, gave us some great minutes off the bench.”
Hatboro-Horsham associate head coach Nicole Miletto:
–The game: “We were in the game in the first half but a six-point third did us in. We missed way too many open shots. We rebounded well and our defense was solid, but defense can only do so much. At some point, we have to knock down some shots.
–Props: “Sophomore Sarah Gleason is playing really well for us. She caused some turnovers along with junior Angelica Visceglia. But we just weren’t consistent finishing layups. We only got to the free throw line once and that really hurt us.”

The Golden Hawks took an 18-11 lead into halftime and then fought off a tenacious Lions’ comeback attempt. Anabella Kushch jumpstarted the Hawks with six first-quarter points. She had eight in the half. Sydney Santora kept the Lions in it with nine first-half points and nine more in the second half. Emerson Gunther’s eight second-half points led the Hawks.
Key players: Emerson Gunther and Anabelle Kushch both had 11 points to lead the Hawks.
Sydney Santora’s 19 points led the Lions.
Council Rock South coach Steve Polinsky:
–The game: “I knew this was not going to be an easy game for us tonight. They are well coached, and we could not pull away from them tonight. This was our third game this week, and we gutted this game out. Bella Hettler, Anabelle Kushch and Emerson Gunther all hit big fouls shots at the end of the game. Emerson was leading scorer again, and she has been double figures consistently all year round. Anabelle had a nice game with 11 points.”
Props: “I have a lot of respect for Coach Andy Krasna and his son Jesse Krasna. Both are class acts and great people. Lower Moreland played hard and gave us all we could handle tonight. We toughed this game out, and I think it could benefit us the down the road. Our guards showed a lot of composure at the end of the game. Gillian Martin. Ruby Bross and Emerson did a nice job to secure the game.”

After battling to a 15-15 tie at the end of one quarter, the Lady Panthers outscored their visitors 11-3 in the second to go into halftime with a 26-18 lead. Rock North edged Cheltenham 30-29 in the second half but never could dig itself out of its first-half hole.
Key players: Paige Powell’s 22 points led the Lady Panther and included three 3-pointers. Her 13 first-half points sparked the Panthers. Powell also had four steals and three assists. Maya Simmons added 17 points – 10 in the second half that included a 5-for-6 effort at the foul line. She also pulled down 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Simmons also had five assists and six steals. Isabella Brown added 14 points.
For the Indians. Alexa Bondra’s 15 points led the way. Brynn Rodgers added 13 points – 11 in the second half. Lauren Smith had nine – seven in the first half, and Julia Koval added eight.

Eleven players contributed scoring for the Redskins, who opened up a 15-5 lead after one quarter and never looked back.
Hayley Kolk led a balanced Neshaminy attack with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals. Mia Raivitch and Nicole Trespalacios both had nine points. Raivitch also had four rebounds and three blocked shots while Trespalacios had three steals. Kate Cieri contributed five rebounds and three steals. Ashlyn Duffy also had five rebounds.
UM’s Hailey Milks led all scorers with 13 points.
Neshaminy coach John Gallagher:
The game: “We were able to score 59 points tonight, but it felt like we left another 30 points on the Bears’ home court right near the rim. Our inability to finish around the rim has become an epidemic, infecting each player on the team. We look forward to the players and coaches correcting this as we have some big games coming up where this would send us to a defeat.
“In a game where Upper Moreland forward #33 (Hailey Milks) was the standout player, we were hindered by being called for 26 fouls. Milks drew several fouls from the numerous defenders we sent her way. As a staff, we will have to try to understand why we were called for 26 fouls in this game while only being able to draw 10 fouls on Upper Moreland. Josh (Adelman) had the Upper Moreland girls playing hard on both ends of the floor, and they can be proud of the effort they showed tonight.”

The Spartans seized early control of Friday’s crossover game, opening up a 19-5 lead after one quarter and extending that to 32-13 heading into halftime.
Key players: Mary Kate Garry’s 22 points led the Spartans and included five 3-pointers. She went on a third-quarter tear, burying four 3s and scoring 15 of her team’s 17 points. Caitlin Lewis added 11 points – all in the first half. Keira Brandon had seven.
For the Tigers, Kaylin Ream led the way with eight points.
Springfield Twp coach Dave Giordano:
–The game: “Nice team effort tonight versus Truman. A good effort defensively in the beginning gave us a lot of easy baskets in the first half. In the second half, MK Garry stepped up and hit four threes and led the way with 22.
“Very nice night for MK – she shot the lights out in the third quarter and played some really good defense, stepped up on the boards and gave us the spark we needed in the third quarter to put things out to reach. She played very well.
“We had great celebration before the game for Ava’s 1000th point. Currently, she has 1,013 for the season.”

The Colonials took care of business in a hurry, putting 27 points on the board in the opening quarter on their way to the non-league rout.
Eliza Meersman led the Colonials with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She was 3-or-3 from beyond the arc. Liv Patete and Grace Harvey both added eight points. Patete also had five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Harvey also had three steals.
Up next: Plymouth Whitemarsh will face Mount St. Joseph on Sunday (6:30pm) in a non-league game in the Hoops for Hope Showcase at Arcadia University.
