Non-league
UPPER MORELAND 54, HARRY S TRUMAN 34
The Golden Bears – sparked by 11 points from Bean Hughes – opened up a 17-6 lead after one quarter and took a 29-17 lead into halftime.
“Tonight was one of the games that gives you a weird feeling,” UM coach Matt Carroll said. “Monday game. Earlier time. No jayvee. Athletes and coaches are creatures of habit and it’s hard to tell the type of impact getting out of routine will have on all involved.
“Tonight I think it affected us negatively. I don’t think we were prepared and ready to play, and that falls completely on me as the head coach. I have to do a better job of putting my players in the right frame of mind and better positions on the court.
“Winning is always important but we talk before every game how improvement is the most important. I’m not sure we got better as a team tonight and that is on me. Thankfully the girls were still able to take care of business.”
The Golden Bears had 11 assists on 15 baskets. They also dominated the backboards, finishing with 25 offensive rebounds with Hughes accounting for 13 of those. The Golden Bears connected on 12-of-16 at the foul line in the second half.
“That was huge for us to keep the game at arm’s length,” Carroll said.
Hughes led all scorers with 25 points, which included an 8-for-10 effort at the charity stripe. Emma Meakim added seven points – all at the foul line. Phoebe Longstreth and Kaiya Herb both had six points.
Daisha Campbell had another big game for the Tigers, finishing with 19 points. She connected on a pair of three-pointers. Hannah Smith added seven points.

VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 57, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 40
Coach Blair Klumpp called his team’s non-league contest against the visiting Jems the ‘tale of two halves.’ The Golden Hawks opened up a 28-22 halftime lead but then – in a dramatic change of fortunes – managed just 12 points in the entire second half.
“We got off to a quick start,” the Golden Hawks’ coach said. “They responded in the first half and we countered.
“(Hannah) Binder hit a three going into half to put us up six. We really controlled the backboards and had 28 rebounds in first half (Binder, Bailey Vetter, Jenna Culp) and the tempo and pace. (Nicole) Blaustein pressured the ball, we rebounded well and got out in transition especially in the first quarter.”
Behind 11 points from Blaustein and six from Binder, the Golden Hawks led 19-9 after one frame. They lost their lead in a third quarter that saw the Jems erupt for 22 points and outscore the Hawks 22-10.
“We came out strong to start the third, they got hot with some threes in transition and half court, and we couldn’t counter back,” Klumpp said. “We responded in the effort in the last quarter and a half on defense and the backboards that we brought the first two-and-a-half quarters and they hit some big threes.
“They deserve some credit for how they battled back, and we have some things we can improve on – converting free throws, bringing consistent effort and energy for four quarters, but we have a quick turnaround.”
Blaustein and Binder led the Golden Hawks with 16 points each. Binder also had 12 rebounds to finish with an impressive double-double. Blaustein added three steals. Bailey Vetter had nine boards, and Jenna Culp, six rebounds. Culp also had two assists and two steals. Montanna Chambers had a pair of steals.
