Non-league
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 45, SOUDERTON 31
It had been 16 days since the Colonials – shut down because of COVID-19 protocols – last stepped on the court to play a meaningful game, and they celebrated their return with a convincing non-league win over the visiting Indians.
“It felt so great,” PW coach Dan Dougherty said. “It’s been a long time and it felt like it. We played on Jan. 12, and we haven’t played since. We got shut down the next day, and we just started practicing this past Monday.
“This is a great group of kids. They’re very hungry. They’re sick of playing against each other, they were very hungry to play a game. It felt great, and even better, it was a home game. I’m very happy for them.”
The Colonials opened the game with a 15-3 first quarter and added to that lead to go into halftime on top 29-11.
“The kids came out of the gate with just a ton of energy, almost too much,” Dougherty said. “They tired themselves out – they had so much enthusiasm.”
Anna McTamney didn’t miss a beat, picking up where she left off in a stellar junior season. She scored all 10 of her points in the first half and finished the game with a double-double, pulling down 12 rebounds.
“Anna McTamney was really good in the first half,” Dougherty said.
Kaitlyn Flanagan was also in top form, filling a stat sheet with 14 points, 10 assists and five steals.
“She was just outstanding,” Dougherty said. “We went up by 20 in the first half. We ended the first quarter on a really big run, and we started the second quarter on a run.
“Their point guard – a very talented kid – (Casey) Harter picked up her second or third foul, and when she went out of the game, we went on a huge run,” Dougherty said. “We came out in our normal full-court pressure and Souderton had a good plan for it, but it’s hard to practice that.
“As the game went on, they made adjustments, and in the second half, Harter didn’t get into any more foul trouble. It stayed pretty comfortable, but they did cut it to 14 at one point.”
Also for PW, Erin Daley had seven points, and Jordyn Thomas had six.
“It was a good game,” Dougherty said. “Credit Souderton’s defense, but we couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean. We were 5-of-15 at the foul line, and we missed the front end of a one-and-one multiple times.
“In the second half, we were 0-for-15 from 3-point, so it was a rough shooting display. In the second half, we looked like a team that hadn’t practice in two weeks, and it’s so cold out – the kids couldn’t shoot in their driveways, but we played good defense. Our defense was there when it needed to be.”
For the Indians, Harter’s 11 points led the way. Olivia Schneider and Mikayla McGillian both had six points.
Thursday’s game marked the beginning of a stretch of three games in three days for the Colonials. PW (2-0, 1-0 SOL) will host Quakertown on Friday night, and on Saturday, the Colonials will travel to Central Bucks South for a non-league game at 11:30 a.m. They’ll take the day off Sunday, and on Monday, they’re scheduled to play at Wissahickon.
“We need games,” Dougherty said. “Practice is getting kind of stale.”

HATBORO-HORSHAM 60, SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 26
Alice Hall controlled the paint for the Hatters, shrugging off a slow start and scoring a game-high 22 points – 11 in a 27-point second quarter that saw the visitors blow the game wide open.
“The start was not bad, and we had a great second quarter,” HH coach Dennis Steinly said. “Alice (Hall) struggled in the first quarter, and I was getting a little nervous, but then she settled down and really had a great second quarter.”
Hall’s life got a whole lot easier in the second quarter in part because of an impressive performance by Caroline Shegogue. The Hatters’ sophomore point guard turned in a gem, burying four 3-pointers and scoring all 16 of her points in a first half that saw the visitors open up a 44-19 halftime advantage.
“Caroline Shegogue – how about that?” Steinly said. “She’s just incredible. She has come so far so fast. The scoring she’s giving us is such a bonus to what she really means to our team.
“She’s controlling the pace, running the offense, playing solid defense. Her court vision is impressive – a couple of passes she made tonight were savvy. And after all that, she’s our second leading rebounder behind Alice Hall.”
Shegogue scored 11 points – three 3’s – in the Hatters’ 27-point second quarter, burying treys on back-to-back possessions at one point.
“When I see other people are struggling, I just take it on and try to do my best to help out,” Shegogue said. “Also, if I’m shooting, they have to come out on me and then I can pass to Alice and help her have a better game.”
Shegogue had five first-quarter points, including a three.
“That helps it go better,” Shegogue said of her strong start. “When you start missing, it gets hard, but once you starting making shots, it gets easier.”
The Hatters opened their season with a tough schedule that included two of their first four games against perennial SOL power Upper Dublin. They also suffered a loss to undefeated Abington but handed Upper Moreland its only loss.
“We have had a bunch of hard games in a row, so it’s nice to have a breather,” Shegogue said.
Also for the Hatters, Alyssa Tooley and Sam Hollish both had six points.
For the Spartans, Annie Coll led the way with 10 points. Eight of those came in the first half. Maddie Yoder – coming off back-to-back 20-plus point performances – was held to eight points.
Hatboro-Horsham (2-3, 0-3 SOL) will host Wissahickon on Friday, and Springfield Township (1-5, 1-3) will host New Hope-Solebury on Friday.
