PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 64, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 27
Erin Daley was unstoppable.
The PW senior scored 25 of her game-high 29 points in a brilliant first half to lead the Colonials to a 38-15 halftime lead on their way to a decisive win over the visiting Lions.
“New Hope came out in a box-and-one against Abby Sharpe,” PW coach Dan Dougherty said. “We’ve waited for teams to do a box-and-one or triangle-and-two on us, so it’s something we’ve been getting ready for.
“Erin Daley just went off against it. She scored 25 points in the first half, so they had to get out of the box-and-one and try to start defending Erin and Abby, and then Abby started scoring. We were happy – when I saw them play against Upper Moreland, I was like, ‘This is a team we better be sure we’re ready for.'”
Sharpe had a huge offensive night as well, scoring 26 points – 15 in the second half. She buried 4-of-4 at the foul line while Daley was a perfect 5-for-5 at the line. Both had two 3-pointers.
As pleased as Dougherty was with the stellar offensive performances of his two stars, he was perhaps even more pleased with his team’s defensive effort, which was highlighted by keeping the dangerous Reagan Chrencik off the scoreboard.
“It was a team effort,” the Colonials’ coach said. “We were doing our press, and when we were in the half court or when they did break it, Haley O’Hara, AJ Avery, Jos Perez and Quinn Daley all took turns guarding her.
“Basically, what we were trying to do was any time she had the ball in her hands – just be up on her, and if she put the ball on the floor, we tried to run a second kid at her, and it worked.”
With Chrencik the focus of the Colonials’ defense, the Lions struggled to put points on the board.
“We knew this was going to be a tough game and we did not meet the challenge,” New Hope-Solebury coach Steve Polinsky said. “We shot the ball poorly, and we need to play better team defense. I give PW all the credit for this game. Daley and Sharpe are both excellent players and play the right way. Their support players do an excellent job finding them. This is the type of game we need to learn from and move on.”
Freshman Gabby D’Agostino led the Lions with 10 points, and Ella Dudick had nine.
“I do give credit to Gabby D’Agostino and Ella Dudick tonight,” Polinsky said. “Gabby did an excellent job not turning the ball over against the press, and this was Ella’s best game of the year individually. She battled and rebounded well.”
Dougherty, meanwhile, was pleased to see his team turn in a complete game effort.
“On Tuesday night, we played Cheltenham, and we played really well the first three quarters, and in the fourth quarter, we took the foot way off the pedal, and Cheltenham wins the fourth quarter 17-6,” the PW coach said. “We walked out of there not feeling good about ourselves, even though we played great for three quarters, so tonight, I said, ‘We don’t have to trap, but let’s just keep playing.’ It was one of those things – I didn’t want us to walk out of here not feeling good about what we did tonight. We won the fourth quarter that way, and the score ended up a little more lopsided than usual.”
Plymouth Whitemarsh (10-2, 6-1 SOL) will travel to Lower Moreland on Tuesday, and New Hope-Solebury (6-4, 5-2) will host Great Valley in a non-league game on Monday.
