UPPER MORELAND 50, MaST CHARTER 26
Three days after falling to conference-leading Upper Dublin by 39 points, the Golden Bears bounced back to earn a no-doubt-about-it non-league win.
“Friday we had a tough outing against Upper Dublin,” coach Matt Carroll said. “We knew we had our hands full with them going into the game, but we all expected that we would have competed a little better.
“I give our girls a lot of credit. They were vocal about things they thought we needed to work on and had a very spirited practice on Saturday. Saturday’s practice translated to today’s game.”
The visiting Golden Bears, who led 9-4 after one quarter, took a 17-10 lead into halftime and put the game out of reach with a 20-point third quarter.
“The girls came out strong, but we really struggled to finish in the first half,” Carroll said. “We shot 4-for-24 from the field but a lot of that was due to MaST. Their 3-2 zone was really active and collapsed when the ball went into the post. Thankfully our defense carried us through the first half. Their guards did a great job handling our full-court pressure, but we made it really tough for them to execute in the first half.
“Our girls’ defense continued through the second half and our offense picked it up. We shot 15-for-31 in the second half, but most importantly, we only took four threes. Our guards were outstanding all game. As a team we had 24 steals and 14 assists.”
Kaiya Herb and Phoebe Longstreth led the way with 11 steals combined. Bean Hughes once again filled the stat sheet with a game-high 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals and five blocks.
“(Hughes) allows our guards to get up and take chances because she’s there on the back end,” Carroll said. “It was a great start to the week as we look to finish the first half of the season strong.”
Also for the Golden Bears, Longstreth had 14 points while Hannah Finn had six.
