COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 59, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 36
Emerson Gunther had the hot hand, burying five 3-pointers and scoring a game-high 22 points to lead the visiting Golden Hawks to the win in Saturday’s non-league opener.
As a team, the Hawks connected on nine shots from beyond the arc, and they were a near-perfect 16-for-18 from the foul line with Gunther’s 7-for-8 leading the way while Anabelle Kusch was 4-for-4 and Ruby Bross was 3-for-4.
The Hawks opened up a 16-9 lead after one quarter and took a 32-14 lead into halftime. Gunther’s nine points led a balanced attack in the quarter while Kusch, Gillian Martin – who had three 3s in the game – and Bella Hettler each had six points in the half.
Key players: Council Rock South: Emerson Gunther led all scorers with 22 points. Gillian Martin and Bella Hettler added nine points each. CB West: Marleigh Mallon led the way with 15 points, and Scarlet Baumgardner added 10.
Council Rock South coach Steve Polinsky: “Today we got off to a fast start against CB West, and we were locked in on the defensive end. CB West is a well-coached, scrappy team, and playing there, we wanted to get off to a solid start. I really liked how all five players – Ruby Bross, Emerson Gunther, Gillian Martin, Bella Hettler and Anabelle Kusch – were all involved offensively. CB West made a run, and I loved how our captains Emerson, Gillian and Bella settled us down on the floor. This was Ruby and Anabella’s first varsity start and they played great.”
Props: “Emerson had 22 points and had an excellent all-around game. Em and Gill both shot the ball well. I’m really happy for both of them.
“I really loved how we shared the basketball tonight and made the extra pass. We also shot 16-for-18 from the foul line, which was outstanding. Jules Bachman, a freshman, scored her first varsity points. It’s nice to start the season with a hard-fought win.”
Up next: Council Rock South will face Methacton on Friday (7:30pm) in the opening round of the Methacton Tournament. Central Bucks West will host West Chester Rustin in a non-league game Monday.
