Non-league
ABINGTON 74, CONWELL EGAN 67
In a game that came down to the wire, the Ghosts came up with several big plays to eke out the non-league win in Saturday’s Keystone Classic at Phil-Mont Christian Academy.
Vanessa Griffin – one of the game’s unsung heroes – buried a pair at the foul line to knot the score, then the Ghosts came up with a steal, and Maya Johnson capitalized, connecting on an insurance basket to ice the win.
Aniyah Williams led the Ghosts with a glittering 23-point effort.
Less than 24 hours after breaking the program record for career assists, Johnson dished out 12 assists.
Key players: Aniyah Williams (23 points, 8 rebounds), Maya Johnson (18 points, 12 assists), Mikiaya Durham (13 points, 4 steals)
Abington coach Allison Lawson: “We started off slow, and we couldn’t find our rhythm in the first half but we stayed in the game. We came out in the second half in our pressure man defense, which forced a lot of turnovers.”
–Props: “Our big girls – Vanessa (Griffin) and Shya (Crafton) – did a great job containing Conwell’s big girl and making her take hard contested shots.
“Vanessa hit two clutch free throws to tie the game, and then we forced a turnover and Maya sealed the deal from the line. Every game someone different is stepping up, which is great to see.”
Up next: Abington (4-4, 2-1 SOL) will return to action Jan. 8 when the Ghosts will travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh.
