WILLIAM TENNENT 52, QUAKERTOWN 23
Angie Pomponio turned in a glittering performance to lead Tennent to the big win in the opening round of the Quakertown Holiday Tournament. In addition to providing floor leadership, the senior point guard scored a game-high 16 points, which included a perfect 10-for-10 effort at the foul line.
“Angie is a tough kid, and she plays bigger than her size,” coach Paul Veltre said. “I’m really hoping she finds a spot to play next year when she gets to school.”
Also scoring in double figures were Kyla Gibson (13 points) and Kelly Scipione (10 points). Alyssa Christansen led Tennent (5-4) under the boards with nine rebounds – seven offensive.
“I had scouted them when they played William Allen, and I was very impressed with some of the things they were doing,” Veltre said. “My biggest concern was their size compared to us because across the board we are so much smaller.
“We wanted to put as much pressure as we could, and we rebounded the ball better than we had earlier in the season, and that made a big difference.”
Tennent opened up a 7-0 lead before Jill Martin put Quakertown on the scoreboard with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Tennent took a 20-6 lead into halftime, and in the third quarter, the visiting Panthers were ignited by the play of Pomponio, who scored six points in the frame and also had three steals and a pair of rebounds.
Scipione, who scored nine of her 10 points in the second half, buried a pair of three-point baskets in the quarter to give Tennent a 40-11 lead heading into the third quarter.
“We’re not thinking about them – we’re thinking about us and how we need to play as a team, rather than who the opponent is,” Pomponio said. “The opponent doesn’t matter.
“We’re all just trying to play together as a team, and we all strive for that one goal – the win, and the opponent doesn’t matter. We know what it’s like to be on the other side and to be getting crushed. We know what it feels like, but sometimes you have to put your feelings aside and get it done, in a respectful way though.”
Quakertown (1-8) struggled to find its offense all night long, scoring just 11 points through three quarter before closing out the game with a 12-point fourth quarter.
“We couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” coach Brittany Remmey said.
Despite her team’s offensive woes on Saturday, the second-year coach has seen progress this season.
“It’s baby steps,” Remmey said. “It’s getting the little things down first. Understanding how to rotate on defense, understanding what’s a smart pass – they’re getting there.
“I think they’re finally seeing it where last year they didn’t.”
Quakertown connected on 9-of-23 from the foul line.
“One of the things we wanted to focus on was attacking the basket,” Remmey said. “It was one of our goals to get to the foul line. They’re accomplishing mini goals.”
Tennent advanced to Monday’s title game where the Panthers will face Palisades and have an opportunity to avenge last year’s opening round loss to the Pirates.
“They’re a very well-coached team,” Veltre said. “Their size really bothered us last year. I know they graduated two of their big girls, but we’re going to have to pay attention to number 20 (Karlee Krchnavi).
“Last year, we held her to one field goal in the first half, and she ended with almost 20 but almost all of it from the foul line.”
