Check out the results for SOL girls’ basketball teams in tournament action on Monday.
UPPER MERION 47, WISSAHICKON 34
Senior Tatiana Pleasant scored 13 points to lead a balanced Viking attack while junior Jessica Michael also finished in double figures with 10. Andrea David and Jordan Wilson both added nine points as the Vikings won a rare morning SOL game on Monday at Wissahickon.
The two teams battled to a 17-17 halftime tie, but the Vikings blew it open with a 12-6 third quarter surge and outscored the Trojans 30-17 in the second half.
“In the second, we missed layups,” Wissahickon coach Rodney Cline said. “We went 2-for-21 on shots in the paint, and you can’t miss those shots.
“Anything they threw at us in the beginning, we were well prepared. They ran a 2-2-1, and we got them out of it. They ran a 1-2-2 halfcourt zone, and we got them out of that. They went man fullcourt, which is fine, but we just couldn’t finish in the third quarter. That really hurt us.”
Julianne Griffin led the Trojans with 13 points, which included a 9-for-10 effort at the free throw line. Sydney Ott added seven. Monday’s game marked the return to the lineup of Daria Earland, a four-year varsity veteran who was sidelined with a concussion.
“It’s our third year in a row having one of our top girls injured,” Cline said. “We’re getting there.
“It’s a process. It’s just a culture change. Players make plays, so players have to start making plays. You just have to be patient. We just have to keep building it. We have to keep moving forward.”

GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC 53, ABINGTON 32
Dan Marsh knew his team’s December schedule was ambitious with a date against Bishop Loughlin to open the season, followed by an early season trip to the She Got Game Classic in Washington, D.C. and – for good measure – the O’Hara Cardinal Classic at Cardinal O’Hara to wrap up the month.
“Maybe my eyes were bigger than my stomach when I made this December schedule,” Marsh said. “I still think it’s going to help us in the long run.
“We have to learn to respond to adversity when you play this type of competition.”
Gloucester Catholic – which opened up a 21-8 lead after one quarter – buried nine three-pointers in the win.
“They didn’t miss,” Marsh said. “They are really good, but they’re not any better than the teams we played before. They’re not as good as Incarnate Wood or Stonewell Jackson. They’re good, but we shouldn’t be getting blown out.
“We got embarrassed, we got picked apart. We got their best player in foul trouble, but it didn’t matter. I know we had a couple of kids that weren’t feeling well, and I’m certainly not making excuses. In the 15 years I’ve been coaching, I don’t think I’ve ever had a 21-point quarter. We have to get better defensively.
“It’s such a roller coaster right now. We played really well in D.C., we played really well against Bishop Loughlin in those three early games, but then we put up a stinker against Neshaminy. I had watched them play O’Hara, and I knew they were good, but I thought they were beatable.”
Villanova-bound Mary Gedaka scored just 10 points, but three of her teammates also finished in double figures. Naiya Sabb had a team high 14 points while Tenisha Pressley had 11 points and Maggie McIntyre, who has signed with Niagara, had 11 points.
“We were trying to contain the kid going to ‘Nova because she drives to the hoop very well, so we had a lot of help in the paint,” Marsh said. “They did a good job of moving the ball and hitting open shots.
“I told them – I don’t even know if we would have won had we played better because of the way they shot, but my concern is responding to adversity. This team is not responding to adversity very well right now, and that’s not Abington basketball.
“Under normal circumstances, even when we’re getting beat, the other team is going to know they played a game. I think we’ll be fine. I still believe we can turn it around, and I still think we can compete for a district championship.”
Sammy Lochner led Abington with 14 points.
Abington (4-4, 3-1 SOL) will play Holy Cross (Md.) in the consolation game on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
