Diamond State Classic
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 60, ST. MARY’S (N.Y.) 38
Four players scored in double figures in the Colonials’ no-doubt-about-it win over St. Mary’s in Sunday’s title game of the IAABO Board 11 Cup
Championship of the Diamond State Classic.
The Colonials, who led 11-4 after one quarter, took a 23-18 lead into halftime and then put the game out of reach with a 21-11 third quarter. They outscored St. Mary’s 37-20 in the second half.
“Tonight was sluggish in the first half – both teams had a long day of waiting around for the game to start,” PW coach Daniel Dougherty said.
Anna McTamney’s 19 points led the way. Gabby Cooper contributed 12 points while Kaitlyn Flanagan and Erin Daley both added 11. Jordyn Thomas had seven points to round out the scoring.
“In the second half, Anna McTamney scored 15 of her game-high 19,” Dougherty said. “Cooper and Thomas played outstanding defensively.
“Kaitlyn Flanagan and Erin Daley made clutch plays in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.”
Flanagan earned tournament MVP honors, and Cooper also was named to the all-tournament team.
Plymouth Whitemarsh (9-0, 3-0 SOL) will travel to Abington on Friday.

ABINGTON 73, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 39
The Ghosts put on an impressive display of long-range shooting, burying 14 three-pointers en route to a decisive win in a battle of former SOL National Conference rivals in Sunday’s consolation game. Junior Amanda Jackson accounted for seven threes.
“Seven threes – this is her second time this year, and that’s the thing – if teams don’t pay attention to her and she gets hot, she’s really hard to stop,” Abington coach Dan Marsh said.
Freshman Cire Worley had four three-pointers. Both had 21 points and shared game-scoring honors. Khalis Whiting had just four points but handed out 14 assists.
“Khalis decided to be a distributor today,” Marsh said of his sophomore point guard. “Council Rock North decided to start out in a zone, and the three teams that played zone against us – we’ve hit double-digit threes. We were able to get Cire and Amanda going, but it was our defense that spurred a lot of it. We had a lot of turnovers and fast breaks. We just overwhelmed them.”
Sunday’s win came on the heels of the Ghosts’ 76-41 loss to McDonogh (Md.).
“We got up early after getting our butts kicked – it could have been one of those ‘we just want to get out of here’ situations,” Marsh said. “But we had a good talk after yesterday’s game and said, ‘We have to continue to get better together.’
“That was kind of our new slogan – get better together, and we’re going to keep plugging away. I think we have some winnable games in January. We’re shooting to get ready for the playoffs. If we can get better, especially defensively, we’re going to be a tough out for somebody.”
The Ghosts seized early control of Sunday’s game, opening up a 15-4 lead after one quarter and extending that to 40-17 by halftime.
“(McDonogh) exposed a lot of our weaknesses that we have been telling these kids about,” Marsh said. “It was perfect because we were able to use that as a teaching moment.”
Jaida Helm controlled play under the backboards, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. She also had 11 points to complete her double-double. Allison Holden added six points.
“Cire (Worley) has been a big key and Khalis (Whiting) was great,” Marsh said. “Ally Holden played great defense today, and Jaida Helm is getting better. The more she gets better – that’s going to make us really good.”
Anna Cairone’s nine points led the Indians. Kiera Katz and Riley Hamilton both added six.
Abington (4-4, 2-1 SOL) will host Plymouth Whitemarsh on Friday, and Council Rock North (3-5, 2-1) will travel to Neshaminy on Friday.
