COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 40, WILLIAM TENNENT 39
The Golden Hawks won a Senior Night thriller, bringing a welcome end to a five-game losing streak. A Carley Irvin 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner.
“This was a much-needed win,” CR South coach Blair Klumpp said. “We lost five in a row, and consistent effort wasn’t there in most of those losses. Our energy and toughness was better today, and we handled a couple of Tennent’s runs.
“They deserved a lot of credit. Laura (Whitney) has them competing and playing hard.”
Trailing by one late in the game, Karissa Smedley came up with a steal on an inbounds pass and turned it into a basket that gave the Golden Hawks the lead. But not for long as Tennent scored to go back on top by one, setting the stage for Irvin’s clutch three.
With nine seconds remaining, the Panthers connected on the first of two at the foul line but missed the second.
“We broke the press, and Hannah (Binder) and Montanna (Chambers) did a good job of clock awareness and dribbling out the clock,” Klumpp said.
For the Panthers, it was a heartbreaking ending.
“It was a tough loss tonight,” Whitney said. “We still had a chance to tie the game at the line with 9.2 seconds left, and unfortunately we made 1-of-2, which was our first miss from the line all game.
“Obviously it’s not the reason we lost, but I felt like our girls left everything on the floor tonight and deserved a chance to win. This game will certainly sting for a while, but we have to take this experience and learn from it. Even though it wasn’t the result we wanted, our girls are getting better and we are growing as a team.”
The Golden Hawks opened up a 14-9 lead after one quarter, but the Panthers trimmed that lead to one by halftime, 19-18.
“We didn’t get the start we were hoping for,” Whitney said. “South came out strong and was being aggressive. They opened up the game on a 9-0 run, and to make things worse, Erin Hart picked up two fouls in the first minute of the game and was forced to sit the rest of the first half.
“I thought we did a great job of settling down and answered with a 7-0 run ourselves to get right back in the game. The rest of the half we played even and were only trailing by one at halftime. We told the girls at halftime that we were really happy with how they weathered the storm and just kept playing.”
The Hawks still led by one heading into the fourth quarter, and when the final horn sounded, it was still a one-point game in Rock South’s favor.
“The second half we came out strong and took the lead at 27-19 on a 9-0 run,” Whitney said. “Unfortunately, we gave it right back and allowed South to go on their own 9-0 run to take a 28-27 lead into the fourth.
“The fourth quarter played out how we expected. Again we came out aggressive and regained the lead, but to their credit they didn’t go away. Every time one team came down and made a big play, the other team came back and answered with another big play. It seemed like every time we extended the lead to three they would come right back and get it to one. The thing that killed us the most though were the three crucial turnovers we had in the final 1:48 of the game. It’s been our crutch all season, and unfortunately, it bit us again tonight.”
Klumpp was understandably pleased with his team’s effort.
“We had our best ball movement probably all year and had some people step up across the board,” the Golden Hawks’ coach said. “When we take that approach, we have been successful.”
Appropriately, it was the Golden Hawks’ two seniors who led the way in the emotional win. Senior Hannah Binder had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals. Senior Jenna Culp added 12 points and three rebounds.
Irvin finished with eight points, two rebounds and two steals. Also contributing were Nicole Blaustein (three rebounds, two steals) and Smedley (two rebounds, two steals, two assists).
“Senior Night games always have a different dynamic to them, and our seniors led the way tonight in different points of the game,” Klumpp said. “Hannah played really well offensively early and was tremendous on the glass late. She turned in a really strong performance.
“Jenna hit two big threes in the third and made some hustle plays late, and the rest of the girls who saw time contributed as well. Montanna (Chambers) had a real good floor game, especially early, She’s done a good job distributing when teams chase her off the line. Nicole (Blaustein) did a real good job on (Courtney) Bragen defensively. She’s a tough matchup and is a physical kid. Nicole battled foul trouble but did a good job staying engaged defensively.
“Karissa (Smedley) has a knack for making things happen on both ends of the floor. Ryann (Szydlik) and Kim (Speiser) both had good defensive sequences late in the first half. The energy of the girls as a whole was really a good thing to see and we need to trump that effort Thursday (against Council Rock North).”
For the Panthers, Hannah Reimel’s 21 points led all scorers, and Courtney Bragen added eight points.
“Reimal played a heck of a game,” Klumpp said. “She had some tough finishes, hit contested jumpers, deep jumpers. She played really well. We bottled her up the first time and she really earned all 21 tonight for the most part.”
Council Rock South (10-11, 6-5 SOL) – 22nd in the latest District One 6A power rankings – will host Council Rock North on Thursday. William Tennent (4-17, 3-8) will host Harry S Truman on Thursday.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 67, PENNRIDGE 54
Junior center Emily Chmiel had 22 points to lead the Patriots to the come-from-behind win in their regular season finale. Mia Salvati added 15 points and Aubrey DeAngelis had 11 points.
“We knew it was a big game,” East coach Liz Potash said. “Every league game is a big game. The girls had set some goals in the preseason, and finishing top two in the league was one of them.
“We lost to North Penn the second time through, we lost to Souderton the second time through, and we talked about the importance of achieving some of those goals. We knew a win tonight would at least tie us for second.
“I thought that was really important because this team was real young last year, and this is the first year there were expectations on them. The second time through – I thought that’s what we had trouble with.”
The Rams – behind seven points from Katie Yoder – led 14-12 after one quarter. They added to that lead with a 19-point second quarter and took a 33-26 lead into halftime. Julia Kreider had eight points in the second quarter, and Emma Pyne buried a pair of 3s and had seven points.
The Patriots came out of halftime on a mission, outscoring their hosts 20-12 to go on top 46-45 heading into the final quarter. Aubrey DeAngelis led the Patriots with seven points in the quarter. The Patriots added to their lead with a 21-9 burst in the fourth quarter. Mia Salvati’s seven points led the way. East connected on 7-of-10 from the foul line in the quarter.
“Pennridge is tough,” Potash said. “They’re very physical, they’re scrappy, and they’re not going to give you anything easy.
“It was important to have a good second half. We wanted to go into districts on a good note.”
The Rams- who were still without Corinn Mart – were led by the 18-point effort of Yoder. Kreider added 15 points, and Pyne had 10. Evelyn Loughery contributed six points.
Also for the Patriots, Gabby Wilga had seven points.
Central Bucks East (15-7, 8-4 SOL) – 11th in the latest District One 6A rankings – is off until the opening round of the district tournament.
“The girls want a home playoff game,” Potash said. “We’ve never been that high since I’ve been there, and we’ve never had 15 wins in the regular season.
“The girls are doing something special. They don’t want to hear that everyone is back next year. They want to do something this year. It’s exciting to be in this position.”
Pennridge (11-9, 4-7) will travel to North Penn on Thursday. The Rams are 18th in the latest district power rankings.

NORTH PENN 44, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 32
Val McGriff jumpstarted the Knights with eight first quarter points, propelling the Knights to a 19-13 lead. The Knights took a 33-20 lead into halftime. McGriff had 10 points and Alli Lindsay had eight.
Both teams managed just 12 points in the second half.
“The second half we really focused on our defense,” North Penn coach Jen Carangi said. “We wanted to hold them to one shot and then rebound.
“Since we had the lead, we were very picky about our shot selection. We didn’t shoot that great in the second half, but we hit some foul shots and played strong defensively in the last quarter. It was a good win for us.”
Lindsay’s 11 points led the Knights, and McGriff added 10.
“Val played great offensively, but honestly, she was even better on defense,” Carangi said of McGriff. “She played tremendous help defense and grabbed rebound after rebound.”
Also for the Knights, Carley Adams had eight points and Alaina Mullaly had six.
Alyssa D’Orazio and Allie Burke led the Titans with eight points each. Mackenzie Erb added six points.
“Allie realized tonight was her last time playing at home and she left her best effort of the season on the court,” South coach Beth Mattern said of Burke. “She was aggressive on the offensive end and trying to control the boards.”
Also for the Titans, Mackenzie Erb had six points.
North Penn (14-6, 7-4 SOL) – 10th in the latest District One 6A power rankings – will host Pennridge on Thursday, and Central Bucks South (9-12, 3-8) will travel to Central Bucks West on Thursday at 5 p.m. The Titans are one spot out of the district field at 25.

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 62, CHELTENHAM 53
Rileigh Serroni had herself a Senior Night to remember, scoring a game-high 24 points and leading the Spartans to their first conference win of the season.
“She always plays hard,” Springfield coach David Giordano said of Serroni. “If three or four possessions go by and she’s not on the floor, something’s wrong because that’s how she plays. She plays that hard.
“It was more than just Rileigh tonight. It was all the girls on the floor with them doing the things they needed to do during the ebbs and flows of the game. It was a solid team effort.”
Serroni, Meghan O’Hara and Emily Guicheteau are the team’s lone seniors.
It was Serroni igniting the Spartans, who trailed 32-27 at halftime. She scored 17 points in a second half that saw the Spartans close out the game with a 36-21 tear.
“The last 10 games we’ve played progressively better every game, and in some situations, it didn’t show score-wise,” Giordano said. “They never give up, their heads don’t go down, they’re trying, and they’re looking to make plays.
“Tonight they played four solid quarters of basketball, and I couldn’t be happier for them. The win was a nice treat for the school and for the girls.”
Also for the Spartans, Maddie Yoder scored 14 points, and Annie Coll had 12.
The Lady Panthers were led by the 15-point effort of Katie Denyer, who buried five 3-pointers. Umayrah Sulayman added 13, which included three 3-pointers. Assata Robinson had 12 points. All told, the Lady Panthers connected on five 3s.
“Springfield really came to play tonight,” Cheltenham coach Ben Bowman said. “I applaud their hard work. We just couldn’t finish down the stretch or make our foul shots. Really tough loss.”
Springfield Township (4-16, 1-12 SOL) will travel to Upper Dublin on Thursday, and Cheltenham (6-15, 2-11) will host Abington on Thursday.

ABINGTON 81, HATBORO-HORSHAM 71
In a contest that saw the two teams combine for 152 points, it was the Ghosts earning the win. Seven players finished the game in double figures.
“It was crazy, for sure,” Abington coach Dan Marsh said. “We know how they want to play – they want to play fast, and so do we. We’re not afraid to play fast.
“We didn’t even press them. We normally press because we want to dictate pace, but we know we don’t have to with them because the pace is going to be there anyway.”
The Ghosts, who led 18-15 after one quarter, took a 36-27 lead into halftime. Cire Worley led the charge with a glittering 18-point half. The pace of the game accelerated in the second half with the Ghosts outscoring the Hatters 45-44 as the two teams combined for 89 points.
“We had a 10 to 15-point lead a lot of the game, but they would battle back and cut it to four,” Marsh said. “I think they even cut it to one one time, and we responded.
“It was like a heavyweight fight. We took a couple punches, they gave a couple punches, and we were able to persevere.
“It was a great win for our freshmen. To be able to respond to their runs was big.
Worley’s 22 points led the Ghosts. Point guard Khalis Whiting added 17 – 12 in the second half. Jaida Helm contributed 14 points while Abril Bowser and Amanda Jackson both had nine. Jackson’s came on three 3-pointers.
“Our kids excel in the open floor,” Marsh said. “The last time we played them we were down by 23 and we came back to win by one, but we didn’t play well. We didn’t execute in the transition game as well, and we were able to do that a little better today.
“We had 13 turnovers, which is still a lot, but considering the amount of possessions we had to score 81 points – 13 is probably a pretty good number. I think that was the key. We took care of the basketball tonight. Obviously, not perfect but for the most part, we were able to limit our turnovers. I think we can run with almost anybody if we limit our turnovers and mistakes.”
Alice Hall’s 20-point effort led four Hatters in double figures. She scored 14 of those points in the second half. Cam Ryan and Jess Howard both added 11 and Caroline Shegogue had 10 points. Emily Thomas had nine points on three 3-pointers, and Sydney Kemp chipped in six.
“That was an exciting high school basketball game,” Hatters’ coach Dennis Steinly said. “It was a great atmosphere. Both teams made runs and hit shots. We made some critical errors at the end of the half and again at the end of the third quarter. Otherwise, I thought we did well.
“Alice (Hall) got sick right before warm up, so I wasn’t sure she’d be able to play but she played a great game. We’re disappointed with the result and there are certainly some areas we need to clean up but there are some good things to take from this game.”
“They crash the boards really hard,” Marsh said of the Hatters. “I think it’s a little bit of a rivalry now because they really got up for this game. Our kids fortunately responded.”
Abington (11-10, 8-5 SOL) – 19th in the latest District One 6A power rankings – will travel to Cheltenham for Thursday’s conference finale. Hatboro-Horsham (11-10, 7-6) – 20th in the power rankings – will host Plymouth Whitemarsh on Thursday.
