In Thursday’s matchup against North Penn, Central Bucks East knew that controlling draws and dominating the midfield would be key.

Central Bucks East coach Kelly Tait: “We knew North Penn had a strong, fast midfield, so controlling the draw was a key focus. Our midfield unit of Paige Dougherty, Natalie Berndt, and Cece Hayes did an outstanding job working together and came up with the majority of the draw controls.
“Offensively, our attackers did a great job creating space, finding the open player inside the 8, and getting off quick shots. As a coach, it’s incredibly rewarding to watch them collaborate and consistently look to set each other up for success.”
—Seniors spark the defense: “Seniors Avery Stephenson and Bella DeHaven led the defensive unit, who fought hard for every ground ball, blocked shots, and caused turnovers. When the defense clicks, it makes things easier on everyone across the whole field, and today they were truly battling and in sync. They did a great job limiting shots and getting the ball back up into our offensive end.”
Up next: The Patriots are back in action hosting Wissahickon at 3:30 pm today in an SOL Crossover game. North Penn will host Kennett at 11 am Saturday.

So many girls all over the field had huge plays that were momentum shifts that don’t always get shown on the stat sheet. Penny Morrison and London Montague were so impactful for us defensively today both in the 8 and in transition. Morgan Gregorio made some really smart decisions and carried the ball well all over the field. Brianna Gardner was a powerhouse for us despite taking a huge hit in the first quarter. Vlada Larina scored her first goal of the season, too.”
Lower Moreland coach Steve Wittmer: “Great back-and-forth bout. We came out strong in the first. Cheltenham battled back, chipping away at the lead. It all came down to the fourth quarter where it was tied 5-5 going in. Cheltenham pulled out a tight one. Great all-around game by both teams.”

She was the difference-maker and made our girls really think about their shots. As the game went on, we were able to place some shots, but their goalie battled the whole way.”
—Rising defense: “Our defense really stepped up today and they continue to learn to work together. Sofie Serrao and Lexyn Ganz have stepped into new roles and are learning each game. Liv Coffey and Shannon Connaughton are taking leadership roles on defense and help to set the tone. Emma Shervin also continues to improve in goal with each game.”

Wissahickon: Samantha Farno (4G), Lexi Bellinzoni (1G), Sophia Stehlik (2A), Emmey Kellie (5 saves).
Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Ellen Reilly: “A total team win. We had great control at the circle, coming up with 13 draw controls. Riley Martin led the way with seven. She has been working really hard on the draw with her other midfield teammates and we are seeing some success.
“We were patient against the 7 shell zone Wissahickon played. We are learning how to be patient and pass the ball to eventually opening up a cutting teammate against a zone. We still create too many turnovers, but it’s due to their hustle and excitement. The more we play, the better they will become and be able to possess the ball after a great caused turnover.”
—Props: “Midfielders Grace Harvey, Maite Jayo, Gracie Kerns, and Riley Martin led the way.
“Our low defenders Keira Whelan, Kai Jayo, Soph Naylor, and Esther Backentose came up with some big ground balls, knock downs, and caused turnovers.
“Low attackers Katie Guarino, Rachel Craft, Shae Murphy, Jackie Spinelli, and Ellie Coyle together had three goals and five assists.”
Up next: Wissahickon will visit Central Bucks East at 3:30 pm today for an SOL Crossover game. The Colonials return to action at Pennsbury at 5 pm April 7.

They’re becoming more confident and aggressive, applying pressure on the ball and supporting each other as a unit. It’s exciting to see them coming together and playing as a true team.”
—Props: “Laney DelRossi had an outstanding performance today. She took control on the draw, working hard to direct the ball to her teammates and help set the tone for possession. Her aggressiveness stood out as she attacked the goal with confidence and purpose. Laney finished with four shots on goal, three of which found the back of the net for a hat trick.
“Liv showed determination and fearlessness, taking five shots on goal and drawing three fouls that led to 8-meter opportunities.
