Cheltenham 13, Norristown 4
There were smiles all around on the Cheltenham sidelines on Monday, as the Panthers picked up their first victory of the season in a 13-4 win over Norristown.
But odds are that no one was smiling more than Abie Leighton.
The senior forward scored the 100th goal of her high school career as part of a 4-goal effort to lead the Panthers into the win column.
“Abie has been one of our star players since she was a freshman, and I had the privilege of watching her grow over the past 4 years,” said Cheltenham coach Marina Schreiner. “She has become a lot more confident, and her shot has gotten incredible. It is so powerful, so accurate. It’s been a privilege to watch her grow and be able to coach her. I’m excited to see what she does in the future.
“She’s worked really hard over the last 4 years. We are not usually in the spotlight, and this is a big accomplishment for her to get to 100 goals. She’s
just a powerhouse on offense. She’s able to shoot around everyone, and she is going to definitely be missed on our offense when she’s gone. She’s a leader both on and off the field as well. She’s one of the captains this year. She leads by example, and she also is very helpful in helping young girls develop. She will go and coach them if I’m busy with someone else. She’s an incredible leader on the team as well.”
Ava Klebanoff assisted on Leighton’s milestone goal and added 2 goals herself. Lily Crocker and Carly Gregorio each scored 2, and Maya Schwartz, Maggie Leighton, and Helena Urban each chipped in with 1 goal.
The Panthers—who jumped out to a 9-1 lead at halftime—improve to 1-2 overall (0-1 American Conference). They will host Souderton at 3:30 pm Friday.
But they’re going to enjoy this one for another day or so.
“It was huge, and it was Abie’s 100th goal as well, so it was a celebration all around,” Schreiner said. “There was so much energy and excitement around the game.”
