UPPER MERION 16, UPPER MORELAND 11
The Vikings were looking to rebound after a pair of tough losses – an overtime loss to Pope John Paul II and a hard fought battle with Upper Dublin.
“We played an awesome first half against Upper Dublin and something just went wrong in the second half,” coach Angie Yanocha said. “We were really bummed out about that. We had a big team talk yesterday.
“Basically, I said, ‘We have to figure out how to win because we’re good enough.’ All the games we’ve lost we’ve been competitive in. I said, ‘Tomorrow really tells the tale. We need to come out and play strong.’ We set specific goals how we were going to achieve that win. For the most part, we were successful with that.”
The Vikings led 10-5 at halftime only to watch the Golden Bears make it a 12-11 game. The Vikings responded with four straight goals to close out the game.
“It got shaky for a little bit,” Yanocha said. “Our focus is maintaining full intensity for the entire two halves and not losing that focus and that intensity.
“Sometimes when you come out in the second half and you have a lead like that you let down a little bit. We weren’t winning the draw at the start of the second half, but something clicked and we started winning the draw and gained control.
“It was really nice to see us really pull away at the end. I called a timeout and after the timeout, we kind of got ahold of ourselves and went full throttle the rest of the game. We work a lot on our clock management. We really held possession a good chunk of the last part of the game. At the end of the game, we did a nice job taking care of the ball.”
The Vikings were down two players on defense for six minutes in the second half but did not allow a goal during that span.
“That was huge,” Yanocha said.
Conversely, the Vikings capitalized on the Golden Bears’ one yellow card, connecting for a pair of goals.
“We took advantage of when they were down and really played solid defense,” Yanocha said. “Our defense has been playing really well.”
Anchoring the Vikings’ defense are Lizzy Goernemann, Marion Fortino, Karli Friend, Gabrielle Struckus plus midfielders Molly Weygand, Quinn O’Malley and Anna Davis.
“We’ve been causing a lot of turnovers and playing well on defense,” Yanocha said. “Offensively, the thing that’s really great about this season – even the Upper Moreland coach (Pam Remmey) commented and said, ‘Your whole attack can score.’
“We’ve consistently had six, seven and eight different goal scorers in a game, which is really cool to see because we’re not relying on two to three girls to score all of our goals. I have confidence in my attack players – every single one of them can score, every single one of them can feed.”
Eight players contributed scoring in Thursday’s win. The O’Malley sisters – Haley, Quinn and Riley – each scored three goals and combined for five assists. Anna Davis (two goals, one assist), Molly Weygand (two goals), Allison Shuster (one goal, two assists), Francesca Lindelow (one goal, two assists) and Lizzy Goernemann (one goal) also contributed to the attack.
Weygand had five draw controls and one interception. Riley O’Malley had a team-high four ground balls, Struckus had three, Shuster and Goernemann, two each. Quinn O’Malley had two caused turnovers while Riley O’Malley, Fortino and Goernemann had one each.
Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey acknowledged the strong defensive play of Melanie Wittick and Emily Zanine. Delaney Smith had five goals, and Sydney Bachmayer contributed three goals and four assists. Allison Felicetti, according to Remmey, played aggressively at both ends of the field and scored three goals.
Emma Hood had five saves and allowed six goals in her stint in goal.

The Colonials turned in a standout defensive effort in the second half, limiting the Trojans – who led 7-6 at halftime – to just two goals.
“In the second half, we played strong defense and capitalized on draw controls to slowly take the lead,” PW coach Ellen Reilly said.
The Colonials took the lead with 17 minutes remaining and then scored the next four goals. They held on to win 12-9.
“I credit our defense in the second half for clamping down,” Reilly said. “Their hustling, sliding and crashing the eight created offensive opportunities along with a good game from our goalie.”
PW goalie Megan Ely was credited with 14 saves.

Proud.
That’s the only word Tara Schmucker needed to describe her feelings after Thursday’s convincing win over the visiting Maidens.
“We have been working hard on poise and execution and tonight it clicked,” the Bucks’ coach said. “It was a wonderful game to watch – the teamwork and the connections.”
Casey Reichwein led a balanced attack with four goals while Bryn Boylan added two goals and three assists. Dani Dundas had a pair of goals and one assist while Maddie Maio had one goal and one assist. Finley Ueland had a pair of goals, and Meghan Darcy added one goal. Olivia Fitzgerald contributed an assist.
“Meghan Darcy and Maddie Maio were exceptional tonight on defense with five and eight ground balls respectively, and each had four caused turnovers as well,” Schmucker said. “In addition, Meghan had a goal and two draws, and Maddie had a goal and an assist and three draws as well
“Bryn and Dani had crucial goals and assists, and Casey Reichwein had four goals, the first that started us off 42 seconds in and then three more in the second half.”
Lauren Devlin and Molly Naylor split time in goal for the Bucks with each recording three saves.
“Both our goalies were awesome – Lauren with 60 percent save and Molly with 75 percent,” Schmucker said. “But again, I credit the entire group and hope that we continue this teamwork and gain new confidence from this win.”
For the Maidens, Bri O’Donnell scored two goals and assisted on another. Jenn DeLongis added one goal and Victoria Brauenle had one assist.
Maiden goalie Michelle Dyck had eight saves.
“CB West definitely showed up ready to play tonight,” Maiden coach Heather Mellow said. “They played a great game tonight. They got and maintained possession of the ball for most of the game.
“Unfortunately, we did not capitalize and take care of the ball the limited time we had possession. If you can’t get possession, you are not going to win the game.”
