SOUDERTON 13, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 12
Megan Walbrandt – displaying a poise that belied her years – scored on a free position goal as time expired, propelling Souderton to the dramatic win in Tuesday’s thriller. The goal capped a remarkable sequence for the freshman, who led the Indians with four goals.
“The past three or four games she has just played out of her mind,” coach Lindsay Walbrandt said of her younger sister. “Something has just clicked, and she is on fire.”
The game winner was set up after Walbrandt drew a charge on the defensive end of the field.
“We made a really silly turnover, and they got the ball and took it down,” coach Walbrandt said. “Megan took a charge.
“I had been asking them all game to take a charge because the girls aren’t stopping, they’re just charging at the cage, so she took the charge. They put her on the eight. There were 9.8 seconds on the clock, and I looked at Nancy Offner, my assistant coach, and I said – thank god Megan has the ball because she is the fastest girl on my team, and she’s the only one who could have made it up the field in 9.8 seconds.
“She made it in less than that. She made it in seven because she got to the eight, got fouled, got a free position. Overall, we were not shooting well today, but she has been playing with confidence.”
Walbrandt posted four goals and Krista Schneider added three. Jules Ofalt scored twice, while Carlie Doughty, Katie Halteman, Leah Goodwin and Kate Mandi also scored for Souderton, which held a 29-18 shot advantage. Goodwin added two assists and Mandi chipped in with one assist.
“Megan and Katie Halteman were consistent, and they held us together,” Walbrandt said. “When we couldn’t find our groove, they were our stronghold.
“There would be 10 people fighting for a ground ball, nobody going for a ball with discipline, and Katie would just come out with the ball. She and Megan just played phenomenally today.”
Walbrandt also was credited with five ground balls and two draw controls while Halteman added three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Ofalt and Olivia Toler each had two caused turnovers, and Sarah Goodwin added four draw controls and one interception for the Big Red, which led 10-8 at halftime.
“I don’t think it needed to be that close of a game if we had had a little more discipline and been a little bit cleaner with our execution, but they played scrappy the last couple of minutes to pull out the win,” coach Walbrandt said. “A win’s a win. We could not have walked away with a loss. If we have any shot at districts, our league record has to be close to perfect going out from here.”
The win came on the heels of a non-league loss to Abington.
“Abington was a great team,” Walbrandt said. “I’m glad we played them. They’re a really good team, and we learned a lot.
“We didn’t play our game, and I don’t think they played their full game either. Both teams looked slow. It stinks when you come out on the short end of the stick, and that’s kind of been the case when we’ve played tough teams this year. That’s why today it made it a lot better – we can do this. We can be in close games and come out with a win.”
