SOL American Conference
UPPER MORELAND 7, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 4
The Golden Bears opened up a 4-0 halftime lead, and that turned out to be the difference in the contest. Listening to UM coach Kim Frantz tell it, the tone might well have been set with the Golden Bears’ opening defensive stand.
“This was an exciting game,” Frantz said. “Plymouth Whitemarsh started off the game with the first draw control and had possession of the ball for more than the first five minutes.
“Our defense – Avery Adamski, Cambrie Richmond, Leah King, and Madeline Cox – along with our midfielders – Annalise Messina, Keira Hess, and Willow Taylor – was a huge part of the win today, and they were able to hold them off without scoring for the first six minutes while PW continued to maintain possession.”
Annalise Messina led UM with three goals, one assist and three draw controls, and Olivia Meakim also had a hat trick. Molly Meakim added a goal and two assists. Adding one assist each were Keira Hess, Charlie Clement and Keiley Hawk. Hess and Hawk also each had one draw control.
Addi Hurley recorded nine saves in a strong outing in goal for the Golden Bears.
“Addi Hurley had some huge saves throughout the whole game,” Frantz said. “Going into halftime, the score was 4-0. Our defense continued to stop Plymouth Whitemarsh from scoring.
“PW did a good job of getting the ball back in the midfield to go back to offense. We went into the fourth quarter with a 7-2 lead, and PW started to gain momentum by scoring two quick goals. Luckily, time was on our side and the game ended with a 7-4 score. Both teams really played hard today, and it was a great way to start off conference games.”
For the Colonials, Bri Reynolds contributed two goals, one assist and two draw controls, and Meghan Wendler had a pair of goals.
“We possessed the ball for a long time today, but we had trouble breaking their backer zone,” PW coach Ellen Reilly said. “My offense struggled and made panic passes which then led to turnovers.
“We face guarded Annalise (Messina), holding her to three goals. Kai Jayo did a great job on her. Having a good game for us on both ends were Bri Reynolds and Maite Jayo.”
Upper Moreland (5-1, 1-0 SOL) will be on the road at Cheltenham Friday, and Plymouth Whitemarsh (0-1) will host Upper Dublin on Friday.
