Non-league
Pennsbury 8, Wissahickon 8 (2OT)
The end of regulation was thrilling … the extra sessions resulted in a stalemate.
Pennsbury and Wissahickon battled to a rare tie in Friday’s 8-8 double-overtime battle.
With Pennsbury clinging to a 1-goal lead late, Wissahickon scored to knot the game at 7-7. The Falcons’ Sasha Dobbs then scored her third goal of the game with 2:34 left to put Pennsbury ahead, but Wissahickon’s Emma Greenberg responded in a huge way, winning the ensuing draw (her fourth DC of the game), then taking the ball downfield and firing in the game-tying goal with 1:39 left in regulation.
“It was an exciting game that went back and forth,” said Wissahickon coach Chuck Wurzbach. “They have some strong attacking players, so we had to make some adjustments defensively. I’m really proud of that unit today. Giving up only 2 goals in the second half is really impressive.”
Alexa McCabe matched Greenberg with 3 goals for the Trojans. Sophia Stehlik scored twice and added 1 assist and 1 draw control, Kaylee Hammond scooped up 3 ground balls, and Nora Ryan chipped in with 2 ground balls and 2 draw controls.
Tatum Ruhren made 5 saves in the cage for the Trojans, who were assessed a yellow card at the end of regulation and played the extra session a player down.
“It was great to see the players supporting and encouraging each other,” Wurzbach said. “Each team had a chance to win, but both goalies came up with some clutch saves.”
Adding to Dobbs’ efforts for the Falcons, Mia Popovich had 2 goals, 1 assist, and 4 draw controls, Grace Holmes had 2 goals, 1 assist, and 3 draw controls, Lily Abraham had a goal and an assist, and Angelina Kenney dished out 1 assist and added 2 draw controls.
