Abington 12, Wissahickon 11 (OT)
Abington made it a Senior Night to remember.
After jumping out to a seemingly comfortable 10-3 lead early in the second half, the Ghosts saw visiting Wissahickon roar back and eventually take an 11-10 lead late in regulation.
Abington’s Piper McGinley scored her third goal of the game to force the extra session, and Audrey Silverman capped off a 3-goal game of her own with the overtime game-winner as the Ghosts pulled out a thrilling 12-11 win.
“This game was not easy in the second half, but we held our heads high and never gave up,” said Abington coach Meg MacClain. “We literally fought till the last second to stay in the game.”
The Ghosts were boosted by goalie Jadyn Bagby, who made 8 saves including a crucial stop in the waning moments of regulation.
Madden Murray and Katie Pennekamp joined McGinley and Silverman with 3 goals each.
Abington won 11 draw controls, led by Harper McGinley’s 5, while Silverman and Katie Pennekamp each won 3. The Ghost defense came up with 22 ground balls on the day.
Emma Greenberg has 3 goals, 1 assist and 2 draw controls, and Alexa McCabe scored 3 goals and helped key the Trojans’ second-half comeback.
“I am so proud of my team,” Wissahickon coach Chuck Wurzbach said. “We kept chipping away and scored 8 straight goals. Emma Greenberg and Lex McCabe made some really big shots for us tonight to get us back in the game.”
Sophia Stehlik had 2 goals, 2 assists, and 2 draw controls for the Trojans. Nora Ryan had 2 goals and 6 draw controls, and Maddie Radell had a goal and an assist.
Ava Fell made 10 saves in the cage for Wissahickon, which saw a number of defensive players step up.
“Nora Ryan and Sophia Stehlik fought for every ground ball tonight, especially in the second half,” Wurzbach said. “Their work on the circle gave us the chance to come back in the game.
“Ellie Stein does not fill the stat book up, but defensive players rarely do. Her ability to shut down an attacker in 1v1 situations tonight and get the ball up the field was excellent.”

The Ghosts will take on one of the other teams atop the conference when they visit Upper Moreland at 7 pm Wednesday. Wissahickon falls to 4-4 (5-8) and will host Cheltenham at 5 pm Wednesday.

Springfield Twp 12, Plymouth Whitemarsh 5
When a team has confidence in its backstop, it makes a tremendous difference.
Springfield Twp remains undefeated in American Conference play, and junior goalkeeper Tess Talbot has been a huge part of the team’s success this season.
“Our entire team has so much confidence in her, and I think it helps with everyone’s belief that we know she’ll save most of the shots she gets,
and she does,” said Springfield coach Marissa Conover. “She truly keeps her eye on the ball. I know that sounds simple, but with the game speed and how fast these shots are at such a close distance, she really watches where the ball leaves the stick at such a close distance to her.”
Talbot recorded the 500th save of her career to keep the Colonials from threatening and give the Spartan attackers numerous opportunities to widen the lead.
“Her confidence radiates to our team, and if she lets in a couple of goals, it doesn’t get to her or affect her game mentally,” Conover said. “Tess is able to have confidence and composure and focus on the next shot. And usually, she’ll save the next one or two. I think goalie is a mental game for a lot of girls and she’s able to keep her mind in the right place.
“She isn’t afraid to step out of the crease and play like an extra defender, which she does often. Her clears to our players are almost perfectly accurate all of the time.”
Buoyed by Talbot’s efforts in the cage, Fiona Rizzo’s 5-point effort and Emma Yoder’s 4-point game allowed Springfield to jump out to a fast start and never look back, leading 9-2 at halftime on the way to a 12-5 victory over Plymouth Whitemarsh in Monday’s American Conference matchup.
Rizzo netted 4 goals and 1 assist, while Yoder scored a hat trick and added 1 assist. Shannon Silvius scored 3 goals, and Shannon Meder had 2 goals and 1 assist. Maddie McDevitt chipped in with 2 assists and was stellar on draw control for Springfield, while Frankie Rizzo had 1 assist.
“We fell behind pretty quickly,” said PW coach Ellen Reilly. “We had opportunities, but Springfield’s goalie stepped up making some good saves. I also thought we could have taken a few minutes to move her with some stick fakes. We had 9 shots on goal in the first half and only scored 2.”
Olivia Reilly scored 2 to lead the Colonials. Ella Clark, Meghan Wendler, and Bri Reynolds each scored 1 goal, while Maita Jayo and Mia Baron each recorded 2 assists. Kaiane Jayo provided a solid defensive effort with 2 blocked passes and 2 caused turnovers.
“I felt we played a much better second half,” Reilly said. “Bri Reynolds and Maite Jayo did a great job on the draw giving us possession. But again, in the second half, we still couldn’t put the ball in the net, only scoring 3 goals on 10 shots.”
The Spartans remain undefeated in the American Conference at 7-0 (11-0 overall), putting them in a four-way tie for first place. They will visit Council Rock South at 5 pm today for a crossover game, then will host New Hope-Solebury at 3:30 pm Wednesday. The Colonials (4-4, 5-7) will visit Quakertown at 6 pm Wednesday.

In addition to Hagerty’s 5 goals, Madison Taylor scored 4, Keira Shaw and Casey Rosenberger each had 3 goals, Kate Derstine scored a pair, and Mya Hibsman, Natalie Boyd, Livian Stover, and Kayla Glaeser each scored 1. Katie Hagerty added an assist.

“Our defense controlled their zone well with Katie Hagerty working hard to turn the ball back upfield,” Quakertown coach Tracy Hibsman said.

Upper Moreland 16, Hatboro-Horsham 5
If not for the efforts of Upper Moreland goalkeeper Addi Hurley, this game might have been very different.
Hurley made 18 saves as the Golden Bears pulled out a deceptively lopsided 16-5 victory over neighborhood rival Hatboro-Horsham in Monday’s American Conference game.
“Addi Hurley had a phenomenal game,” said Upper Moreland coach Kim Frantz. “Hatboro had the ball and many shots on goal, but Addi was on fire in the goal tonight.
“This is a game where the score doesn’t tell the whole picture. Hatboro played hard. Our defense did a great job working together—the first 5 minutes of the game Hatboro had the ball, and our defense was able to hold strong those 5 minutes to prevent them from scoring on that run.”
On the offensive end, Annalise Messina put up 10 points on 6 goals and 4 assists, while Reagan Cummins had 3 goals and 4 assists. Olivia Meakim scored 2 goals and assisted on 3 others, Belle Leiter had 2 goals and 1 assist, Molly Meakim scored once and had 1 assist, Allison LaRocco and Maggie Morrow each chipped in with 1 goal, and Alexa Marczak recorded 1 assist.
“We have a special group of girls on this team,” Frantz said. “They work hard together and have a goal they all want to achieve. We are excited for some upcoming games the rest of this week and next week.”
Upper Moreland sits in a four-way tie atop the American Conference standings at 7-1 (12-2 overall) and will host fellow frontrunner Abington at 7 pm Wednesday. The Hatters fall to 2-5, 2-10, and will visit Upper Dublin at 7 pm Wednesday.

New Hope-Solebury (1-8, 1-6 SOL) will travel to Springfield Township on Wednesday.

“Our defense and middies – Karissa Smedley, Teagan Shay, Emerson Wackowski, Grace Franchini, Amanda Green, Kelly Longmore, Zoe Brossman and Lizzie Hearn – created lots of turnovers on defense,” Rock South coach Madison Hurwitz said. “It was a great team win.”
