Hatboro-Horsham edged PW in the first of back-to-back contests Monday.
Hatboro-Horsham 1, Plymouth Whitemarsh 0
The first of two meetings between the teams this week went to the Hatters.
Despite scoring just one goal, Hatboro-Horsham’s attack generated plenty of chances and put 16 shots on net. For all their efforts, the Hatters found themselves unable to put anything away in the first 40 minutes of play.
“I told the girls at half we had possessed the ball way more and looked like the better team, but the score was 0-0,” Hatters coach Kelsey Daley said. “They had to come out just as strong in the second half and keep that possession.”
Shortly after the start of the second half, a cross from Hatters sophomore Caroline Shegogue found its way past the PW keeper and to forward Emily Thomas, who was bunched between a pair of Colonials defenders. The ball caromed off the cluster of players and into the net, giving the Hatters the one score they would need.
Hatboro-Horsham’s offense, including Shegogue, Thomas, Maggie O’Neill and Mia Malofiy among others, connected well and was able to move the ball from the middle to the wings to serve in plenty of crosses.
“(PW) is battling some injuries and other issues, so I knew they were shorthanded and their lineup would be a little different,” Daley said. “We started with our normal formation just to see how it played out and knew their focus would be on Emily Thomas. When they started double or triple teaming her, we played out wide and came back to the middle and it seemed to work.”
With a multitude of starters sidelined, the Colonials still got a solid effort from a lineup that had little time together. Freshman Caitlyn Dinh made her second start in net with 14 saves and the back line of Lauren Ianniello, Emily Caffery, Raya Gauntlett and Brianna Reynolds held a potent offense in check.
The teams meet again Tuesday afternoon at Plymouth Whitemarsh in a 3:45 start. The Hatters upped their record to 5-1 while the Colonials are 2-3.
