CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 2, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 1
The Titans had come oh so close to notching a win on more than a few occasions this season. Four of their six losses were by one goal.
On Friday, the tide finally turned, and the Titans had reason to celebrate, notching their first win of the abbreviated season in a rivalry game.
“We started the season very strong and got unlucky with a few 1-0 losses in a row, which killed morale and made everyone play very stressed like they had to do everything on their own on the field,” South coach Amy Moriarity said. “We weren’t playing like a team the last few games.
“We came in with good attitudes today and played our hearts out. Each goal came about from working the ball up the field as a team and not giving up on it until it went in the net. It was so gratifying to see the whole team come together cheering in the final minutes and finally see the time tick down to 0.00 with South ahead on the scoreboard, running on the field and just feeling 100 pounds lighter that we finally won one.”
The win didn’t come easily, but nothing comes easily in the highly competitive Colonial Division. The two teams battled to a scoreless halftime tie, and midway through the second half, sophomore Alison Sauers put the Titans on the scoreboard.
“Eva Costello took on the left outside back and took the ball all the way and cut it back with a cross to Brooke Edwards, who ticked it through the box to Alison Sauers, who volleyed it past the East goalie,” Moriarity said.
Moments later, East scored off a corner, knotting the score 1-1.
With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Titans took a lead they would not lose when Colby Roach scored a goal that turned out to be the game-winner, using Edwards’ second assist of the game.
“Captain Aly Cutter won the ball on the right flank and distributed to Brooke Edwards on a long ball,” Moriarity said of the game-winner. “Brooke cut down the goal line and delivered a perfect Bangu ball too Colby Roach who kicked it into the back of the net.”
The Titans’ coach went on to credit several players in the emotional win.
“Goalie Kristen Conway had several spectacular saves to keep the ball out of the net and spirits high on the counter attack,” Moriarity said. “Maddy Tantum, Leah Schnee, and captain Bridget Curtis delivered exceptional defense in the second half.”
Central Bucks South (1-6-1 SOL) will host North Penn on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in their initial meeting. Central Bucks East (4-4) will travel to Central Bucks West for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday.
