ABINGTON 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 1
Abington has battled a myriad of injuries and lineup changes through the first few games of the new season. But it didn’t stop the Ghosts from beating Council Rock South on Wednesday for the first time in coach Rick Tompkins’ tenure as Abington coach.
The Ghosts scored three first half goals and held off a hard charging South squad in the second half to claim their first league win of the season.
Issy Mugnier gave the Ghosts the lead with a long distance shot that found its way past the South keeper. Kailey Horton scored next to give the Ghosts a 2-0 lead. Mugnier added a second goal before the end of the half, and the Ghosts led 3-0 at the break.
The second half was a different story. The Golden Hawks scored quickly to open up the half, but the Abington backline stood tall.
“Our defense played very well. They really shut them down,” Tompkins said.
The Ghosts have dealt with a lot of injuries to open the season. On Wednesday, midfielder Julia Guarini went down with a broken nose and no timetable has been set for her return. The injuries have forced Tompkins to rearrange his formation on the field. In spite of that, he believes the chemistry is there.
“They’re a work in progress,” the Ghosts’ coach said. “That group has only been playing together for two games because Kathryn Gerhard came off the bench and then got injured. Toni Washington and Marissa Heath are solid—I know every game I’m going to get a maximum effort from those two.”
Gethard is now back and provided a much-needed spark on the defensive end for Abington. Tompkins said his captains—Washington, Guarini, and Maddie Doyle—have been crucial in steadying the team.
Another test is on the horizon for Abington (2-2, 1-2 SOL) on Friday against Bensalem.
“We’ll find out Friday [how much Wednesday’s win means,]” Tompkins said. “If we take care of business against Bensalem, then I’d say it had some value, but if they don’t turn in a good effort, then it doesn’t mean a whole lot.”
The Golden Hawks (3-1, 2-1 SOL) will battle William Tennent Friday
Council Rock South 0 – 1 – 1
Abington 3 – 0 – 3

But the Owls roared back in the second half. Tori Yorgey scored for Bensalem in the 60th minute with an assist from Liz Slivinski.

SPRINGFIELD 2, CHELTENHAM 1 (OT)
Springfield came out on the right side of a tight overtime thriller with Cheltenham.
Katherine Nelson scored in the tenth minute to put the Spartans on the board first. Emily Giampetro got the assist, and it stayed 1-0 through the first half.
“[She made] a great run up the left side and just shot it right pass the goalie on the ground, a perfect corner shot,” coach Suzette Wolf said of Nelson’s goal
Twenty minutes into the second half, Cheltenham tied it up with a goal from Dana Shelton, setting the stage for overtime.
“I felt like we were dominating a lot of the game, but then all of a sudden, it switched,” Wolf said. “They started putting some passes together, they were finding the open man on us. It was a nice evenly matched game.”
Five minutes into overtime, Springfield center back Lindsay Smith made the most of a free kick opportunity. From about 30 yards out, Smith drilled in the game-winner into the upper netting, capping off a big victory for the Spartans.
“It was a nice win because they’re always so well coached,” Wolf added. “Lindsay Smith played incredible the whole game. Nothing was getting past her today. It was just a real solid game for her as well as my other two outside defenders – Julie Kelly and Samantha Wynne.”
Wolf also lauded the relentless play of freshman Sarah Potocki at center forward.
“She must have had 20 shots that just either went to the goalie or went wide,” the Spartans’ coach said. “She was muscled off the ball because of her size and the physical strength of Cheltenham, but she hung in there and played a tough game for us.”
Both teams will be back in action Friday. Springfield (2-1, 2-1 SOL) will play Upper Moreland and
Cheltenham (2-2, 1-2 SOL) will go on the road to Norristown.

There’s no stopping Tori Hoffner lately.
Or Upper Dublin for that matter.
The Flying Cardinals stayed hot Wednesday afternoon shutting out Upper Moreland, 6-0.
Hoffner scored three goals to lead Upper Dublin. Becca Watson, Paige Lawton and Sizzy Lawton added a goal each in the winning effort.
The Flying Cardinals jumped out to an early lead as Hoffner’s first goal came in the second minute of play. Upper Dublin led 4-0 at halftime.
“She’s got a great mix of athleticism and composure in front of the goal,” Upper Dublin coach John Topper said of Hoffner. “She’s smart on the ball, hard working, and has come to understand when to run at defenders and when to lay the ball off and bring her teammates into play.”
That makes eight goals in four games for Hoffner.
