The Flying Cardinals dropped the first set but came back to win the next three in American Conference action.
“Hatboro Horsham is a very strong serving team which rattled (us) early and often,” coach Paul Choi said. “But we were able to regroup after the first set and became more consistent defensively in serve receive and digging throughout the match, ultimately leading to a four-set win.
“Horsham did not give up and played strong defensively, closing the gap, but (we) had contributions from nearly everyone on the team.”
Middles Alison Gouveia and Sarah Dennin both had four blocks while Gouveia also contributed seven kills. Bryn Stek, who has been consistent all season long, had another double-double with 40 assists and 19 digs. Both outsides, according to Choi, were on fire and really put the pressure on H-H’s defense. Gabbi Johnson had a double-double with 13 kills and 19 digs while Jenny McAneney led the offense with a season high 19 kills (.362 hitting percentage) and 16 digs. National Conference
PENNSBURY 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23)
The Falcons survived a brutal schedule last week and opened what promises to be another challenging week with a key conference win over the archrival Indians.
“Last week was rough for us,” coach Michael Falter said. “We had the Tennent loss, which was tough. We had Garnet Valley on Thursday, Downingtown East on Friday, and North today, and then we have a match Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It doesn’t let up.”
The Falcons dropped the second set after opening up a 20-16 lead but came back to win the next two.
“North fought hard at the end of the second game and came back,” Falter said.
Sophomore Julia Vreeswyk had another huge performance at the net to lead the Falcons, finishing with 17 kills and an impressive .311 hitting percentage. She also had 11 digs and two aces. Her impressive showing came on the heels of back-to-back 24-kill efforts against Garnet Valley and Downingtown East.
“She’s not making errors,” Falter said. “She came into training camp a solid player, and she plays with no fear. She just goes up and swings. She’s confident and comfortable, and she doesn’t care about what’s going to happen. She just does what’s best in the moment.”
Elle Patterson added 10 kills, 11 digs, two aces and one block. Ali Zinnen also had 11 digs. Setter Kate Foley had 33 assists, six kills, 10 digs and two aces. Dagny Gould led the defense with 21 digs. Kayla Haddad added five kills.
“Offensively, we’re a very, very strong team, but defensively, we struggle sometimes,” Falter said. “It’s something we’re working on, but there’s hesitation by the girls at some point, so I told them – ‘You literally have to do everything you can to keep the ball from hitting the ground, so don’t think so much. Just go get the ball.’
“I told them – if we’re going to win this match, it has to be with our floor defense. We were a little inconsistent the first two sets, but in sets three and four, we became a little more consistent with our floor defense. I think that’s what ended up winning the match.”
The Indians were led by seniors Aly Kuiken (11 kills, two blocks) and Katie Rentz (13 kills, one ace, two blocks, 13 digs). Sophomore Maddy Moore added 10 kills and 10 digs. Danae Barkley had two kills and one block, and Hadley Grundman added four kills, one ace and one block. Johanna Batterton had 25 assists. Carrie Kuiken led the team with five aces. Defensively, Grace Schweizer had a team-high 20 digs.
Pennsbury has non-league matches with Mount St. Joseph on Thursday and Strath Haven on Saturday, capping a stretch of eight matches in 12 days.
“It’s good for us,” Falter said. “This is why we play the teams we play, to get ready for districts.”
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3, BENSALEM 0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-8)
The Golden Hawks earned a sweep of the Owls.
