Council Rock North Holiday Tournament
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 62, HATBORO-HORSHAM 39
After scoring just 24 points in each of their last two games, the Indians found their offensive stride in Friday’s tournament opener against the Hatters, opening up a 28-24 halftime lead and then blowing the game wide open with a 22-5 third quarter burst.
Eleven players contributed scoring in the win for the Indians.
Key stretch: The Indians received five points from both Julia Koval and Amara Arroyo and four points from Alexa Bondra in a 22-point third quarter that effectively secured a win for the Indians.
Key players: Amara Arroyo led a balanced attack with 11 points, Skyler Wright added nine points on three 3-pointers – all in the first half. Alexa Bondra and Sasha Galarza both had eight points.
For the Hatters, Angelica Visceglia (15 points) and Maddy Patel (14 points) led the way.
Council Rock North coach Jack Kelly: “Really proud of our girls – they have been working really hard. Their effort has never wavered, and it felt good to see it pay off. It sounds cliche, but today we really got key contributions from everyone.
“I thought our bench gave us really good minutes in the first half, and we hit some shots. Visceglia and Patel from Hatboro are very good guards who shot it well themselves, but in the first half, every time they hit a shot, it felt like we were able to respond and hold on to our lead.
“In the second half, we did a better job of keying on both of them and staying connected defensively, and I thought we did a really good job of
running the floor and rebounding. Quick turnaround, but we are looking forward to playing in the championship game tomorrow.”
Up next: Council Rock North (2-7, 0-3 SOL) will face Souderton in Saturday’s title game (1 pm) while Hatboro-Horsham (1-6, 0-2) will face New Foundations Charter in the third place game at 11:30 am.

SOUDERTON 44, NEW FOUNDATIONS CHARTER 39
Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Indians needed late-game rally to earn the win in Friday’s opening game of the Council Rock North Tournament.
The Indians trailed by three heading into the final quarter when Julia Purvy and Alaina Picard led the comeback with six points each. Emily Dick had four points in the quarter. Dick and Madison Bealer shared the team lead with five rebounds each.
Key stretch: The Indians closed out the game with an 18-8 tear.
Key players: Alaina Picard (11 points), Emily Dick (9 points, 5 rebounds) and Olivia Herron (8 points) led a balanced Souderton attack.
Souderton coach Lynn Carroll: “We got off to a great start and quickly went up 10-0. Olivia (Herron) had two 3s in the first few possessions of the game. We struggled to finish the rest of the half, and they went on a 15-7 run to pull within two at the half.
“We were in foul trouble on and off for most of the game and got good contributions off the bench from Erin (McGee), Mia (Morgan) and Liz (Word). Liz continues to play with more confidence on both ends. Erin had a great move and finish in the second quarter when we desperately needed a
basket.”
–The comeback: “We were down five less than a minute into the fourth quarter but then ended the game on an 18-8 run. Alaina (Picard) had six of those points on cuts to basket and great assists from Olivia and Liz. Under a minute to play, Madison (Bealer) made a great pass to Julia (Purvy) who finished a tough shot, got fouled and made the foul shot to put us up seven and seal the win.”
Souderton (7-3, 1-2 SOL) will face Council Rock North in Saturday’s title game (1 pm).

CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 42, SPRINGFIELD TWP 32
The Bucks limited the Spartans to just six first-half points as they opened up a 15-6 lead. They added to it in an 18-14 third quarter on their way to the win.
Key players: Emily Ladley (12 points – 4 3-pointers) and Scarlett Baumgarnder (12 points) led the Bucks.
For the Spartans, Ava Culler led the way with 17 points.
Central Bucks West coach Zach Sibel: “It was a good win – it was much needed. We went into the break needing to get some stuff together. We had a couple of really good practices leading up to it, and the girls played well. I thought we played a better team game.”
–Props: “Scarlett Baumgardner and Emily Ladley tallied 12 points each – Emily four from the 3-point line and Scarlett a little bit more inside the arc.
“Addy Fay and Miya McDaniel really did an awesome job on the backboards. We rebounded by committee, but those two really stood out. They had some tough players inside, and we were able to keep them at bay because of the way Miya and Addy played, which complemented the offense we were running.
“It was complimentary basketball today, and it was nice to get back in the winning column.”
–Credit to Culler: “Ava Culler is really good. She got going. I’d like to say we held her to 17, but she got 17 tough ones. I don’t think we really gave her any easy baskets.”

Hilltopper Classic
NESHAMINY 45, DAMASCUS (Md.) 21
The Redskins wasted no time before seizing control of Friday’s contest, opening up a 28-3 lead in the opening quarter.
Hayley Kolk scored all nine of her points in the opening quarter. Alena Cofield, whose 10 points led the Redskins, had eight first-quarter points. Cofield also had 10 rebounds for her seventh straight double-digit rebound effort in as many games.
A trio of Neshaminy players scored their first varsity points – Angelina Tiberio, Aly Meltzer and Ella Hoyas.
Neshaminy coach John Gallagher on the game: “Damascus was 3-2. We watched two of their games on video. They have a senior – Madison Slayton – who was the MCPS (Maryland County Public School System) League MVP last year. We had a game on video where she had 28 points on Dec. 17. They also had a sophomore, Maddie Fimpong, who has been averaging 12 points a game.
“We put Hayley (Kolk) on Madison Slayton, and she wound up finishing with five points. I’m really happy with the job Hayley did with that. We put sophomore Mia Raivitch on Fimpong, and Mia held her scoreless, which I was really happy with because this girl can get up and down the floor.
“Auslyn Wilkins had three steals. She got on the floor for a loose ball early in the first quarter that resulted in an Alena Cofield basket that got us kind playing really, really hard.
“Three of our subs that came off the bench in the first quarter and each hit a 3 – Auslyn Wilkins, Sydney Snyder and Camryn Rodriguez. It was still a game at the time, and they were able to open up the lead.
Up next: Neshaminy (5-2, 2-1 SOL) will play Westmont Hilltop in Saturday’s championship game (4 pm).
“It should be fun because there was a really big crowd there today for Westmont Hilltop’s first game, and I assume tomorrow they will have a bigger crowd, so we’re looking forward to that,” Gallagher said.

Diamond State Classic
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 57, CONCORD 31
For one quarter, it looked as though the Colonials might be in a for a battle as they were tied after one frame, 15-15. Then came an 18-6 second-quarter tear that sent PW into halftime with a 33-21 lead, and they added to that lead in the second half.
Taylor Williams and Eliza Meersman both had 14 points to lead the Colonials. Williams scored nine of those points in the first half on three 3-pointers and added five more in the third.
“She is filling in for Joslyn Perez right now at the two, and she is making the most of her opportunity,” PW coach Dan Dougherty said. “I’m happy for her.”
Meersman had 11 first-half points.
Key players: Elize Meersman finished with a double-double that included 14 points and 10 rebounds as well as three steals. Taylor Williams also had 14 points, which included four 3-pointers.
Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Dan Dougherty: “Depth and our pressure were the difference. Concord was able to hang until middle of second quarter, but we kept running fresh legs out there and wore them down over the second and third quarters.
–Props: “AJ Avery, Kenna Winland, and Olivia Patete all played great. We got quality minutes/spark from Brooke Peduzzi today as well.”
Up next: Plymouth Whitemarsh (7-0, 2-0 SOL) will face Appoquinimink High School from Delaware in Saturday’s finale of the Diamond State Classic at 7 pm.
“Despite their record, tomorrow’s opponent should be tough,” Dougherty said. “Appoquinimink plays an elite schedule, so we will have our hands full.”

Upper Merion Holiday Tournament
WILLIAM TENNENT 50, PENNCREST 41
The Panthers led 14-6 after one quarter only to see the Lions return the favor in the second quarter, and the two teams went into halftime deadlocked 20-20. Avery Kocur’s 10 third-quarter points ignited a 21-point quarter that swung the game in Tennent’s favor.
Key stretch: The Panthers erupted for 21 third-quarter points to break a 20-20 halftime tie and took a 41-30 lead into the final quarter.
Key players: Avery Kocur led the Panthers with 18, Meg Volz had 14 while Halie Staub had seven and was a force at both ends of the court.
William Tennent coach Laura Whitney on the win: “It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win and we were happy to come out on top tonight.
“We got off to a great start, but the rust of not playing in a week reared its ugly head the second quarter. As good as our defense was early on, we gave it all back the second quarter with poor help defense and missed boxouts.
“On top of it we started to rush offensively and were too careless with the ball. We talked at halftime about tightening up the defense and being smarter and more disciplined on the offensive end. We still gave up too many rebounds, but luckily, we got the stops when we needed them and executed better on offense.
“We’re looking to keep improving tomorrow as we try to defend our title at the Upper Merion Holiday tournament.”
–Props: “Avery Kocur led the way with 18 points and made some big plays in the third and fourth quarter to keep the momentum.
“Halie Staub didn’t score like she usually does, but was being aggressive at both ends of the floor.
“Meg Volz did a great job of getting out in transition and finishing around the basket.”
Up next: William Tennent will take on Upper Merion in Saturday’s title game (1:45 pm).

Marian Catholic Christmas Tournament
NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 62, OLEY VALLEY 44
Oley Valley led by two after one quarter, but the Lions erased that deficit in a hurry with a 21-point second quarter to go into halftime with a 30-25 lead. Emily Wilson was the catalyst with eight points – including two 3s – in the frame. The Lions put the game out of reach with a 19-4 third quarter.
Key stretch: The Lions blew the game wide open with a 19-4 third quarter that included 11 points (with three 3-pointers) by Izzy Elizondo.
Key players: Izzy Elizondo (17 points – 4 3-pointers), Emily Wilson (15 points – 3 3-pointers), Ella Dudick (11 points), Mary Tresler (11 points), Kayla Fennell (8 points)
New Hope-Solebury coach Andy Krasna on the game: “Oley Valley is a mirror image of New Hope-Solebury with an enrollment of just 508 students. Like us, they are a small 3A school with an impressive 7-2 record. They play lightning fast and push the ball at supersonic speeds unlike what we have seen all season. We thought we were ready for their foot speed, but we looked like our feet were in quicksand during the first half.”
–Dudick delivers: “We fortunately trailed by only two points after the first quarter, thanks to a big eight minutes by senior center Ella Dudick. Ella had her best all-round game this season to date, and her intensity on the boards was impressive. She was a defensive force in the paint and altered many of Oley Valley’s shots. Ella finished with a productive 11 points that helped us get the win.
–Wilson & Tresler double trouble: “Emily Wilson and Mary Tresler owned quarter two. Emily was feeling it today, hunting her shot and knocking down three 3-pointers in the second quarter. Her leadership and on-court demeanor were calming factors for the coaches and her teammates. Mary scored six points in the quarter and played with such confidence for a ninth grader with limited varsity experience. She is a sponge in practice, asking tons of questions and wanting to push her game to the next level. She is learning to quickly forget on-court mistakes and move onto the next possession.”
–Elizondo on fire: “Izzy Elizondo helped to put the game out of reach. She caught fire, nailing three 3-pionters in the third quarter, finishing the game with an efficient 17 points. Izzy is focused on adding attack moves, and defenders are having a hard time containing her.”
–More props: “Our balanced scoring is a byproduct of our players’ selflessness. We are getting high percentage shots because we are making good decisions and reversing the ball quickly. Four players in double figures against an Oley team who defends well is something we feel good about.
“Junior Kayla Fennell helped to facilitate many of the 62 points we scored with timely assists after drawing double teams.”
Up next: New Hope-Solebury (7-0, 3-0 SOL) will face Marian Catholic in Saturday’s title game (5 pm).
“We play Marian Catholic in the championship on their home court,” Krasna said. “They are clearly one of the state’s premier teams, defeating their opponents by an average of 36 points.”

West Windsor Plainsboro Classic
PENNSBURY 60, WEST WINDSOR PLAINSBORO-SOUTH 20
The Falcons roared out of the gate to a 26-6 lead after one quarter, and they never looked back on their way to the big win. Ava Jordan and Sammie Haws ignited the Falcons with Jordan scoring 10 first-quarter points while Haws added seven.
West Windsor is coached by one of coach Frank Sciolla’s former players, Zak Kumor.
Key stretch: The Falcons owned this one from the outset.
Key players: Sammie Haws and Ava Jordan led a balanced Falcon attack with 12 points each while Keira Socha added 11.
Pennsbury coach Frank Sciolla: “It was certainly nice to see Zak Kumor today as he is doing a nice job building the program at West Windsor South. but unfortunately, for them, they were without their best player. She’s a point guard, and without her, they had a really difficult time getting into their offense.
“The circumstances of them being shorthanded led us to being able to get a number of different people into a number of different spots . It’s nice to keep our momentum, but tomorrow’s game (Somerville, NJ) is going to be a major challenge for us.”
–The fast start: “We got off to a really fast start led by Sammie Haws and Ava Jordan. We shot the ball way better than we have in any game this season, and we jumped out to a big lead. Defensively, we were able to take them out of their offense, but I was impressed at how committed they were to try to run their offense even though they were shorthanded and our athleticism and depth.”
–Props: “Alyssa Thomas played a really clean game, and Keira Socha once again took a big step and did a good job getting us into our offense and creating plays and scoring.
“We tried to rotate as many people as we could onto their center as she is much taller and bigger than us, and everyone did a really good job with that.”
Up next: Pennsbury (6-3, 3-0 SOL) will face Somerville (NJ) on Saturday.

Boardwalk Classic (Showcase)
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 40, CONESTOGA 28.
The Patriots trailed by one after one quarter (12-11) but then threw some serious defense at the Pioneers, allowing just 12 points over the final three quarters as they rolled to the decisive win.
Key players: Sophomore Haley Moran’s 17 points led all scorers. East also received double-digit scoring efforts from Sydney Ralph and Jess Lockwood with 10 points each.
Central Bucks East coach Liz Potash: “For us, the story of the game was the defense. We went in with a very specific defensive plan. Ryann Jennings is a really nice player for Conestoga, Janie Preston is a really nice player, and we knew exactly what we needed to do. We felt there have been other games this year where we had a similar idea – we knew what we needed to do to shut down some of the top kids, and we weren’t able to execute as well as we wanted to, and we did it unbelievable tonight.
“We just gave the kids so much credit. Nat (Berndt) did a nice job on Jennings, and Jess (Lockwood) did a great job on Preston, but the help that the other three were able to provide – Preston is a really nice player, and we held her to three points. She’s a big inside, and for me, it was all about the defense. Jennings and Preston are tough, and they have nice pieces around them.
–On the offensive: “Both teams struggled to shoot the ball. You’re on a different court, you’re on the bus traveling down – who knows what it is? On the offensive side, Haley Moran was unbelievable. She got to the basket – nobody could stop her. A couple kids struggled making shots, but especially in the second half, Haley really got to the basket and finished. When people started collapsing, Sydney Ralph hit two 3s in the fourth quarter that just put the game away.
“The last two games, Syd (Ralph) has scored in double figures for us. She got off to a little bit of a slow start this year, but we knew obviously she’s capable of doing that. She did that for us all last year, so now she’s coming around. It was a really nice team win.”
Up next: Central Bucks East (6-1, 3-0 SOL) will face Berks Catholic on Saturday (5 pm).

Non-league
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 67, VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 42
The Golden Hawks seized early control of Friday’s non-league game against their neighboring rival, opening up a 16-6 lead after one quarter and extending that to 30-12 by halftime on their way to the big win.
Key players: Fiona Reckner’s 14 points led a balanced Rock South attack. Lil Metrick buried four 3-pointers for 12 points. Bella Hettler, Emerson Gunther, Kathryn O’Kane and Gillian Martin each added eight points.
Turning point: “We got out to a fast start and got out to a 10-point lead pretty early on. The girls did a great job paying attention to the scout and what we showed on film and applied it. We liked the pace we played with and the energy we played with.”
Council Rock South assistant coach Blair Klumpp: “Our depth played a major role in the pace we played with tonight as well as contributions from many girls in different areas. Obviously, six girls with at least eight points is great balance. The part about this team that we like is any eight consistently in the rotation can give us double digits on a given night.
“Our girls had some familiarity with some of their players, and I thought we did a great job of following the game plan and executing on both ends of the court and the girls deserve a lot of credit for that. The girls also did a good job of implementing some things we worked on in practice the last two days.
–Props: “In particular, I thought Fiona (Reckner) and Bella (Hettler) did really good job with moves in the paint and playing off two feet and with contact. Both also played very well defensively.
“Kat (O’Kane) was attacking and working on some other finishes we have been trying to implement and got to the foul line.
“ Sarah Freeman was very active with deflections, winning 50/50 balls, and keeping possessions alive, which is an X factor player all good teams have and something she’s been getting back to consistently in practice.
“Emerson (Gunther), Gill (Martin), Annabelle (Kushch) all gave us offensive production off the bench in different ways. Gill is playing with some confidence and had a lot of activity plays similar to Sarah. Maria has been awesome for us offensively the last three-plus weeks. She didn’t score today but really impacted the game defensively. She has a history of guarding some of the best guards the SOL has seen in her time here, and she’s really playing both ends well for us.
“Lil (Metrick) was back for multiple practices for the first time since her injury and is looking more comfortable. I know her four 3s will be what stands out, but she was very good defensively today especially on rotations with what we were trying to and very active pressuring their guards. Her focus on the scout/attention to detail.
“Overall, it has been a good four-game stretch for us. We have improved in some areas (ball movement and emphasizing the pace we want to play), and we look forward to the return to some SOL play and getting back in the routine of things. We need to remain focused on the next game in front of us (Bensalem), keep working hard daily, focusing on attention to details and stay connected as a group.”
