The Golden Bears made the four-hour trek to Holidaysburg for Saturday’s PIAA 4A quarterfinal contest and came oh so close to knocking off previously undefeated Oil City.
UM went on top 27-22 early in the fourth quarter on a six-yard Cameryn Jackson touchdown run, but the two-point attempt failed. With four minutes remaining, Oil City answered with a touchdown, regaining a 28-27 advantage, and that score stood until the final horn.
Early on, Oil City took an 8-0 lead, but the Golden Bears came back to make it an 8-7 game after quarterback Byron Hopkins hooked up with Jahaire Johnson for a 32-yard touchdown grab. UM took its first lead of the game on another Hopkins to Johnson connection – this one from three yards out.
Late in the opening half, Oil City scored and converted its two-point attempt to go into halftime with a 16-14 edge.
A five-yard Hopkins touchdown run midway through the third quarter gave the Golden Bears a 21-16 lead, and the seesaw battle continued with Oil City scoring early in the third to go back on top 22-21, setting the stage for the hotly contested finish.
Jackson led the Goldens Bears with 116 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Upper Moreland saw its successful season come to an end with a 5-2 record (4-0 SOL). The Golden Bears won the SOL American Conference and the District One 4A crown.
