Spring-Ford edged Pennsbury 1-0 in Friday’s District 1 6A third place game.
Class 6A Third Place
#1-1 SPRING-FORD 1, #1-3 PENNSBURY 0
Ainsley McClure and Brianna Peck found themselves locked in a classic pitcher’s duel in Friday’s district third place game. The two teams combined for just sixth hits.
“It was a great game,” coach Frank McSherry said. “Both teams played really well – no errors throughout the whole game.”
The Falcons had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the second inning. Karli Haines led off the frame with a double to center, and she moved up to third on Caitlyn Martell’s sacrifice bunt. Peck brought an emphatic end to that threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
Neither team had another base runner until the bottom of the fourth when the Rams plated the game’s only run. With one out, Noelle Reid picked up the Rams’ first hit with a single, and Jules Ryan followed with an RBI.
“Ainsley pitched so well,” McSherry said. “Spring-Ford is the number one seed in the district. She pitched a great game, a great game.
“(They had) a lot of mishits, which is her game. They had some popups and grounders, nothing hit real hard except for the double.”
The Falcons threatened in the seventh when – with one out – Martel and Liz Pingor collected back-to-back singles. Both runners moved up on Riley Mahoney’s groundout, but Peck closed out the game with a strikeout.
Peck allowed four hits in the complete game shutout, striking out 10 and walking one. McClure allowed two hits and one run while striking out five and walking one.
“The kids played well,” McSherry said. “We just didn’t hit.
“We’ve got to get our bats back. We only had five hits in the last two games (combined).
Pennsbury (18-4, 12-0 SOL) will face District 2 champion Hazleton in Monday’s opening round of the District 1 6A Tournament.
