Non-league
UPPER DUBLIN 4, GWYNEDD MERCY 0
As season openers go, it was certainly a good one for UD senior Kyla Garrison. The Cardinals’ ace needed just four strikeouts to reach the 600-strikeout mark for her career. She took care of that in the second inning.
Garrison went on to strike out 18 and, for good measure, tossed a complete game no-hitter.
“Today was the third time we’ve been on our field since the season started, and she’s in midseason form,” UD coach Heather Boyer said of Garrison. “The girl has just worked incredibly hard her entire career, and she never settles.
“She’s so humble, she’s very, very grateful for the opportunities she has. She does what she does because she loves it. She doesn’t have an agenda, she’s not flashy, and she’s not looking for accolades. She just loves to work, she loves the process, she loves to compete, and it truly showed today. She shined.”
Eighteen strikeouts was a career high for Garrison.
“I wasn’t aware that I was reaching a career high in strikeouts, but I knew I had a lot during that game,” Garrison said. “This milestone is special because it is my first real game of senior year, and my two brothers, my father, grandmother and my older cousin were all there to witness this milestone.
“I’ve worked really hard this winter to prepare for this high school season. It was a good first game and I’m excited to play my last high school season with my team.”
Garrison’s counterpart also had a big day in the circle. GMA’s Bella Pistilli allowed just four hits – Garrison had three of them – and fanned 14.
“She was a very, very tough pitcher to face today,” Boyer said.
The Cardinals scored the only run Garrison would need in the first inning. Ava Renye was hit by a pitch and stole second. She scored when Garrison delivered an RBI single.
By the numbers: Upper Dublin: Kyla Garrison (W) (7.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 18K) (3-for-3, 1RBI)
Gwynedd Mercy: Bella Pitstilli (6 IP, 4H, 4R, 1BB, 14K)
Upper Dublin coach Heather Boyer:
–Garrison excels: “Kyla’s got great breaking pitches. She’s a spin pitcher. I think I called two fast balls today. That was it, and that really was because of the situation we were in. It was more to give the catcher an opportunity to throw a runner out. She’s got good velocity, but she likes her breaking pitches. Just that element of deception. You don’t know which way the ball’s going to go. It’s amazing. It’s really fun to watch and very fun to coach.”
