Upper Merion played its second game in as many days, this time defeating Council Rock South.
UPPER MERION 8, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 6
Upper Merion is one of the few teams able to play on its field, and apparently the Vikings want to make sure their fans get their money’s worth.
One day after battling Bensalem for 11 innings before falling 6-4, the Vikings found themselves staring at an early 5-0 hole on Wednesday against the Golden Hawks but managed to dig their way out of it for the dramatic win.
“The girls battled back – I give them credit,” UM coach John Whitney said. “We were kind of flat, and Council Rock South came out hitting the ball pretty good.
“They put a four-spot up, but we tied it in the third inning, and we kept working. It was a struggle, but I give the girls a lot of credit.”
The Golden Hawks – the home team on UM’s field since their field was unplayable – scored four runs in the bottom of the first and added a single run in the second to go on top 5-0.
The Vikings answered with four runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead only to watch the Golden Hawks knot the score with a single run in the fifth. Sophomore Alyssa Adinolfi did not allow a run the rest of the way.
“They hit her early, and she continued to fight through it and did a really good job,” Whitney said.
The Vikings scored the winning run in the top of the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh.
“We manufactured some runs,” Whitney said. “We didn’t have big hits.
“Michaela Ghanayem, who drove in two runs in the fourth inning, had another RBI in the sixth. She came up big for us .
“In the seventh inning, we had first and third, and one of our seniors – Linda Sobeck – came up and she worked a count. She grounded out to first base, but that gave us an insurance run.”
Micaela Ghanayem and Allie Moffett both contributed a pair of hits and three RBIs. Also contributing two hits were Dez Kandy, Abby Volpe and Riley Kontra.
“We hit the ball a little bit, and defensively, we played a lot better than what we did yesterday,” Whitney said. “It was a big win for us.
“It didn’t look good early, but the kids battled back and kept working.”
The Vikings are 1-1 on the young season while most teams are still looking to play their first game.
“The field actually held up pretty good for us, considering nobody else has been playing,” Whitney said. “This is big for us.”
