COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 8, VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 0 (5 innings)
On a day when most games were rained out, the Golden Hawks got in five innings – enough to qualify as a legal game. Lexi Waring didn’t let the weather impact her performance, tossing a one-hit shutout in the abbreviated five-inning game. She recorded 12 of 15 outs on strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
While control was not an issue for Waring, it was for her counterpart, who walked the first two batters she faced. The Hawks’ first run – which stood as the game-winner – crossed the plate when Ameerah Wheet delivered a sacrifice fly to center. A third walk set the stage for a two-run single by Jordan Bobrin, and the Hawks led 3-0. They added a pair of unearned runs in the second without the benefit of a hit.
In the third inning, Bobrin singled to right to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fifth, Grace Stepp led off with a line single to center, and after her courtesy runner, Emma Traktavenko, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, she scored on Bobrin’s groundout. A second run crossed the plate before the game was called with the Golden Hawks on top 8-0.
“We did what we had to do to win in a shortened game,” Rock South coach Dan Schram said. “Every game counts the same in the softball point system. Lexi pitched great and Jordan Bobrin got it done on offense.
“The real stars of the game were members of our athletic staff at South. Our athletic director and field guys worked hard to get this game in for us. We appreciate all of their hard work.”
Borbrin finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Kaylie Waters stole two bases out and also scored two runs out of the leadoff spot.
Council Rock South (2-0) will travel to Bensalem for its SOL opener on Tuesday.
