SOL Liberty/Freedom crossover
UPPER MORELAND 7, WISSAHICKON 4
Freshman Delaney Stout had another strong outing in the circle, striking out 13 while walking just one. She scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs in the complete game win.
“She had a great game,” UM coach Melanie Martino said of her rookie pitcher. “We had several people make great plays. Second baseman Lianna Adames had a great game as did Erin Distel at first.”
The UM coach also acknowledged Stout’s batterymate, catcher Kaylee Brown.
“She has been pretty sick, but we couldn’t keep her off the field if we tried, and she called a great game for Delaney behind the plate,” Martino said. “I think people forget how difficult being a catcher is, and she does a great job for us. Having a senior catcher with Kaylee’s personality and a freshman pitcher has been a perfect match.”
The two teams exchanged runs in the first inning. The Golden Bears got on the board first when Stephanie Jones, who walked, scored on Claire Walton’s single to center field. The Trojans collected a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning to even the score.
Upper Moreland’s three-run second included singles by Erin Distel and Kelly Bates (RBI) as well as several Trojan miscues, giving the Golden Bears a lead they would not lose.
The Bears led 5-1 after Delaney Stout doubled and Emma Kramer – her courtesy runner -scored on a sacrifice fly by Bates. The Trojans plated a run in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run and made it a 5-3 game with a run in the fifth.
Stout singled to lead off the top of the sixth, and courtesy runner Kramer scored on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Jones. The Golden Bears led 7-3 after Joslyn McCellan singled and eventually scored on a passed ball.
The Trojans plated a run in the bottom of the seventh for the 7-4 final.
“Picking up wins in two of our crossover games with Abington and Wissahickon this week has been huge,” Martino said. “Wissahickon has a gorgeous new turf field, and for some of our players, that was a first for them, but I felt like they adapted well.
“Wiss made some great plays in the outfield and played a great game. Today was just a good game of softball on both sides.”
Stout was 2-for-3 with one run scored for the game’s only multi-hit game.
Upper Moreland (8-1, 6-1 SOL) will host Upper Dublin on Thursday, and Wissahickon (3-7, 1-5) will be on the road at Cheltenham on Thursday.
