HARRY S TRUMAN 19, ABINGTON 9
Less than 24 hours after their historic win over Pennsbury, the Tigers took the field for a conference game against the Ghosts. Any thoughts that there would be a letdown were put to rest in a hurry as the Tigers exploded for six runs in the second inning, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead they would not lose.
“We’re on fire with hitting – it’s crazy,” coach Lisamarie Belmonte said. “It’s been so much fun to watch them develop and pretty much keep it moving.
“I have to give props to my jayvee coach, Rick Palmer, because he gave them a very good inspirational speech this morning, talking about how we’re not a joke anymore and we’re a team that’s coming together. The girls are performing and playing. They bought in.”
There were no seniors in Truman’s starting lineup that included a pair of freshmen. Stealing the spotlight was sophomore Kailea Heston with a perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate that included two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Chrissie Huhn was 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Vanessa Tancini was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Aurora Rice was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs, and Hayley Carter was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
The Tigers, who collected 19 hits, scored runs in every inning but the sixth.
“We hit in key situations with runners on,” Belmonte said. “The only inning we did not score in was the sixth.”
Carter, a junior, and freshman Jalecia Blackston split pitching duties.
“I had my freshman pitcher come in to relieve Hayley Carter in the third and fourth inning, and she held her own,” Belmonte said. “She did pretty well for herself, and I was pretty proud of her for making her first varsity appearance today.”
The Ghosts collected 13 hits of their own, led by the 3-for-4 effort of Sam Marasheski, who drove in three runs and scored one. Tori Brandenburger was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Julie Burkhardt was 2-for-2 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot, and Jess O’Neill was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Harry S Truman (3-4, 3-2 SOL) will host Nazareth Academy on Monday in a non-league game, and Abington (3-4, 1-4) will host Council Rock South on Tuesday.
