Pennsbury defeated Bensalem in the only SOL softball game played on Tuesday.
PENNSBURY 6, BENSALEM 1
The Falcons and Owls found themselves deadlocked 1-1 heading into the fifth inning when the Falcons plated a run that turned out to be the game winner. They ended up scoring five runs over the final three innings.
“It took us a while – their pitcher has a very good change-up,” coach Frank McSherry said. “It was a struggle, no doubt about it.”
The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Falcons got that run back in the second. In the fifth inning, catcher Arden Rabiger’s RBI double plated the go-ahead run.
Olivia Mauro led the Falcons’ attack, finishing 4-for-4 on four bunt singles.
“She’s a slapper, and so far, she’s 10-for-11,” McSherry said. “She puts the ball in play, and she puts some pressure on the defense.”
Carley Parsons was 2-for-4, Anna Downs was 2-for-3 and Alex Rishel was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Allison Rose had a double and RBI.
Alyssa Heilman earned the win in the circle, improving to 3-1 on the young season. She scattered eight hits and struck out five. In four games, the junior pitcher has not walked a batter.
“She’s really pounding the strike zone,” McSherry said. “In baseball, they use this (phrase), but she’s almost becoming a throw-to-contact type pitcher.
“She’s throwing a lot of strikes, and fortunately, so far we’ve made a lot of good plays.”
The Falcons were coming off a split on Saturday at the annual St. Dominic Tournament that this year – due to field conditions – was played on the turf fields at Seton Hall University.
In its opening game, Pennsbury defeated Pope John XXIII 1-0, thanks to a walk-off home run by sophomore Allison Rose in the bottom of the seventh in her first varsity game.
The Falcons fell to Morris Knolls 3-0 in the second game of the day.
Pennsbury (3-1, 1-0 SOL) will host Abington on Thursday, and Bensalem (3-1, 0-1) will travel to Neshaminy.
