Week 1: Featuring Evan Wilson (CB East) & The 17th Annual Solanco Mule Classic
Well, we are off and running…the 2014-15 Wrestling Season is underway, and one of the biggest surprises is 2013-14 State Qualifier at 138 pounds, Evan Wilson, from Central Bucks East. The surprise is not the winning, but where he is winning. Wilson has made the jump up to 182 pounds, almost 50 pounds and five weight classes. His high-paced style and aggressive offensive approach on his feet was in plain sight this past weekend at Solanco High School in the 17th Annual Mule Classic. Wilson has bulked up and looks strong at the upper weight and has not lost a step as he wrestled like a lightweight with the big boys. Wilson pinned his way to the finals where he dismantled Hershey’s Jack Habowski for a major 11-0 decision in the finals to capture the 182 pound title.
Despite the absence of Francesco Fabozzi (Princeton), the Patriots managed to finish sixth overall at the Mule. Fabozzi, who worked out with Wilson last year, was the man for CB East last season, but this season Evan Wilson is the man. He appears content with the new added size and weight he has put on and smiled when asked if he didn’t want to cut weight anymore.
Evan has always been tall and lanky for the lower and middle weight classes, and his frame was always there for the making. The leverage he often used with his height at the lower weights has not been lost up at 182 pounds. In fact, his quickness and solid hips that made him successful at 138 has made him a threat to medal in Chocolate Town, USA, at his new weight as he has combined that with power and strength needed to compete in the upper weight classes. He will be fun to watch this season as wrestlers, coaches, and fans look for him earlier in matches only to find him up top.
CB East crowned a second champ at Solanco with Ryan Chalifoux winning the 132- pound title. Chalifoux also defeated a wrestler from Hershey High, John Voyles, as he escaped with a 4-3 victory in the finals. Chris Eck coasted to the finals as Solanco’s Grayson Charles missed weight at 113 pounds, but was tech falled by Joe Lobeck of Lancaster Catholic to place second for the Patriots. Collin Stevens was fifth at 152, and Matt Casciolli, who has also moved up, was fourth at 170 dropping his last match of the weekend to Josh Sneeringer of Delone Catholic. And Manny Martinez closed out the team scoring for Central Bucks East with a sixth place showing at 285.
East finished sixth overall out of 19 teams, topping Coatesville, a potential top 10 team in District One this season, with 122 points.
Hatboro-Horsham also competed at the Mule, but the Hatters were not as fortunate in the team standings as they finished in the unlucky 13th spot. But 2014 Southeast Regional qualifier Nick Schuck led the way for the Hatters as he cruised to the finals with two falls after narrowly getting through his first match 5-4 over Coatesville’s John Cruz. In the championship tilt at 285 pounds, Schuck ran into Solanco’s 2014 PIAA 4th place finisher, Bo Spiller. Schuck could only manage second place as Spiller toppled Schuck for the fall in the first at 1:22. Overall, Schuck looked good just one week removed from the football field. H-H’s Sam Negron took seventh, medaling in his freshmen campaign at 106 pounds, and Matt Chapman did the same at 220 with a pin over the Patriots’ Marshall Whinney at 2:12 in the seventh place bout.
