SuburbanOneSports.com: Upper Dublin captured the District 1 5A title with a 21-7 win over West Chester Rustin. The Flying Cardinals will face Imhotep Charter in Friday’s PIAA 5A semifinal. Your thoughts.
Drew Markol: “In Upper Dublin’s district final against West Chester Rustin, the game was interrupted when the lights for the field went out – there was a lengthy delay, but it was still a very solid 21-7 win for Upper Dublin. West Chester Rustin scored late to snap a string of 15 scoreless quarters – almost four games where Upper Dublin’s defense had not allowed a point, which is just a remarkable number. The win gave Upper Dublin its third district title in the last five seasons and their fourth district title since 2015, which obviously makes them, without question, the dominant Class 5A program in Dsitrict 1.

SuburbanOneSports.com: Upper Dublin blew open a close game to defeat Plymouth Whitemarsh 30-0 in Friday’s battle of neighboring rivals in the District 1 5A semifinals. Your comments.
Drew Markol: “You look at Upper Dublin’s much anticipated matchup against Plymouth Whitemarsh in the semifinals last week. Plymouth Whitemarsh had beaten Upper Dublin last year in a district second round district game, 42-36, in overtime, so you had the whole revenge angle going. Upper Dublin wins the game 30-0 going away, but it was much closer than that. It was 7-0 at the half and 10-0 heading into the fourth quarter, but Plymouth Whitemarsh could do nothing offensively.

SuburbanOneSports.com: CB West defeated North Penn 44-35 in a wild district quarterfinal. You were there – your thoughts.
Drew Markol: “That was exciting. West had played CB East for the second week in a row – they played them the last game of the regular season, and they played them again in the first round of the playoffs. That was a good East team that only lost three games. West beat them twice, and their other loss was to Pennsbury. It was really impressive to do that. West scored 35 against North Penn in the regular season in a 35-14 win, and then they put 44 on them Friday night in the district quarterfinals, which is really remarkable. It’s hard to beat a good team twice, and it’s really hard to beat a Dick Beck coached team twice and score nine more points than you did the first time. That was unexpected. North Penn lost its best running back – junior Amir Major – at the end of the first half, so they didn’t have him in the second half, which really didn’t help.

SuburbanOneSports.com: Central Bucks West defeated Central Bucks East for the second time in eight days in last year’s opening round of the District 1 6A Tournament. You were there. Your thoughts?
Drew Markol: “It was funny the way that things fell. You had East and West, the archrivals, playing each other the last regular season game. West wins that one 21-14. They never trailed in the game, but it was tied a couple of times. East had everything going for it, but West takes it away from them.

SuburbanOneSports.com: CB West defeated CB East last week, and on Friday night, the two rival schools meet again in the opening round of the District 1 6A Tournament. Your thoughts.
Drew Markol: “That was a really good game last week. The place was packed. It was the first night of the World Series, and that didn’t hurt the crowd at all. Especially, CB East’s student section was absolutely mobbed. They really turned out.

SuburbanOneSports.com: CB South defeated CB West 27-14 in a rivalry game. You were at that game. Share your thoughts.
Drew Markol: “That was a game – I thought West would win it. South the past couple of weeks as we’ve talked about has discovered a running game. Owen Wheeler is a very good baseball player – he’s going to Maine, and he caught a huge touchdown pass in the back of the end zone that put them ahead for good. Tommy Donnelly, another senior wide receiver, returned a punt for a touchdown to get the scoring started. South just played really good defense because West kept the ball and did a lot of the things that West always does, including a 99-yard touchdown drive that included Matt Cleland running about 30 yards on a a fake punt in West territory on fourth down to keep it going. It was just one of those games – West would move up and down the field, but they couldn’t crack the South defense, and South was able to get some scores here and there, and they got themselves a really nice win that’s going to push them up the district rankings.

SuburbanOneSports.com: Pennsbury defeated North Penn 44-34 in a high-scoring game. Your comments.
Drew Markol: “I went back and looked, and nobody did the math. Everybody wrote – ‘It’s been a long time since…’ So, I went and did the math and got the numbers. It’s amazing - I think North Penn won 21 in a row over Pennsbury. There were some years they didn’t play in the regular season, and there were some years they played them twice – in the regular season and districts. It’s a lot of games.

SuburbanOneSports.com: In one of the week’s marquee games, Central Bucks East defeated North Penn 42-35 in a high-scoring game. Your thoughts.
Drew Markol: “CB East was 5-0 and lost to Pennsbury last week, and one of their nemesis – North Penn, who’s been a nemesis to a lot of teams – was next. CB East hadn’t beaten them in 20 years, and they hang on and beat them 42-35 in a defensive struggle. It would have been a bigger win for North Penn as far as district seeding goes, but it was a nice bounce-back by East. Ethan Shine, the running back, had 290 yards and four touchdowns.

SuburbanOneSports.com: Neshaminy defeated Pennridge 7-6 in a classic defensive battle. You covered the game – your thoughts about those two teams.
Drew Markol: “You had Neshaminy at 3-2 and Pennridge at 2-3, and you knew it would be close. They just played between the 30s the whole game. Pennridge went to a freshman quarterback in Noah Keating, who’s the grandson of former coach Jeff Hollenbach. He’s a freshman, but he has a nice arm, and there’s a presence that he has. It’s just hard for a freshman to compete at that level, but if he keeps improving, Pennridge is going to have found something.

SuburbanOneSports.com: Pennsbury continued its impressive run with a big 28-6 win over Central Bucks South. You were at the game. Share your thoughts.
Drew Markol: “Pennsbury and Central Bucks South both were 3-1 going into the game. Pennsbury’s the big story we keep talking about every week, and it’s worth talking about because they had that long losing streak, they brought back Galen Snyder to coach, and they dominated CB South. It was only 7-0 at the half, but it could have been and should have been a lot more for Pennsbury, but they came out in the second half and just put the game away. It’s vintage Pennsbury. It’s run, run, run – you run to set up the run, and it’s working. They’re 4-1 now. They lost to an undefeated Coatesville team in week one, and now they’ve won four in a row.
