Wes Verbit turned a screen pass into a 70-yard touchdown on CB East’s first play from scrimmage, and the tone had been set – this would be a day of big plays. In the end, it was the Patriots holding the advantage in that department and earning the big win over their neighboring rival.
The Patriots put 40 points on the board in three quarters of action, and when it came to big plays, no one delivered bigger plays than East’s Myles King. It was King scooping up a Brian Stella block of a punt and taking it 30 yards for a TD and a 14-0 East lead. Later in the half, he returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown.
The Titans didn’t go down quietly. They made it a 14-7 game when Sam Thompson – who combined with Ian Vogt for more than 300 yards in the air – found Justin Schreiber with a 28-yard TD pass.
It was a 23-13 game late in the opening half, but in a play that might well have broken the Titans’ back, East quarterback Jack Lamb punched it in for a touchdown from the two-yard line with one second remaining in the opening half to send the Patriots into the intermission with a 30-13 lead.
Every time the Titans got close, the Patriots responded and took a 40-20 lead into the final quarter when the Titans scored a late touchdown.
For a South squad that managed less than 100 yards on the ground, Joe Vitelli was Thompson’s favorite target, hauling in seven passes for 148 yards and two TDs. Stephen Iannuzzi had seven receptions for 121 yards. Defensively, the Titans were led by Luke Kohler, who had a hand in 13 tackles, and Matt Hemsler (10 tackles).
For the Patriots, Alex Gibson had 107 yards on the ground – 73 of those in the pivotal first half. Lamb accounted for over 200 yards of offense and two TDs – 137 of those yards came in the air.
The win capped a memorable day for CB East as a pair of its finest graduates – Bryan Scott and Lauren Crandall – were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame and had their numbers retired. Scott had a career in the NFL while Crandall, a field hockey standout, went on to excel at Wake Forest and is a member of the U.S. National team. She served as captain of Team USA in the 2012 Olympics.
Central Bucks East – off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 1996 – will host Council Rock North in its SOL opener next Saturday at 1 p.m. Central Bucks South (1-2) will play at Bensalem on Friday night.

The Tigers saw senior quarterback Mark Lopez-Shefcyk leave Saturday night’s non-league game against the Owls with a knee injury. Running back Jordan Freedom stepped over center and led the Tigers to the win.
The two teams went into halftime deadlocked 7-7. The Owls scored first when quarterback Kenny O’Connell connected with Kevin Shea for a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Truman answered with a first quarter score of its own on a touchdown run by Maurice Jackson.
The Tigers scored a TD that turned out to be the game winner early in the third quarter when Justin Fant picked up a teammate’s fumble and took it in from 37 yards out for the score. Freeman also scored a third quarter TD for the 21-7 final.
Truman (2-1) will travel to Council Rock South next Friday night for its SOL opener while Bensalem (0-3) will host Central Bucks South.
