PENNSBURY 3, GARNET VALLEY 2 (20-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-9)
The Falcons rallied from a two-set deficit to earn the dramatic come-from-behind win in a non-league match. Making the win even more impressive was the fact that it came on the heels of a disappointing loss to William Tennent – the Falcons’ first loss of the season – on their own court two nights earlier.
Julia Vreeswyk turned in a monster performance, finishing with a double-double that included 24 kills (and an impressive .327 hitting percentage) and 16 digs. She also had a pair of service aces. Elle Patterson also had a double-double with 14 kills, 15 digs and a pair of aces. Dagny Gould (16 digs), Kate Foley (13 digs) and Ali Zinnen (11 digs) all came up huge defensively as well. Foley also handed out 47 assists to go along with three kills while Gould had five of her team’s 12 aces. Zinnen had five kills.
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 3, WILLIAM TENNENT 2 (22-25, 24-26, 25-7, 25-16, 15-8)
The Indians dropped the first two sets of Thursday’s match at Tennent but rallied to win the next three of the pesky Panthers, who were coming off an upset of Pennsbury.
Leading the way for the Indians were senior Aly Kuiken (11 kills, two blocks) and Katie Rentz (10 kills, three aces, one bock, 12 digs). Danae Barkley added 10 kills and two blocks, and Hadley Grundman had nine kills, five aces and six blocks for the Indians, who improved to 5-1 in conference play (5-4 overall).
UPPER DUBLIN 3, ABINGTON 2 (14-25, 25-13, 25-19, 24-26, 15-10)
The Flying Cardinals eked out the five-set win in a classic American Conference battle.
"It was a very good match against a strong offensive and determined Abington squad that fought till the very end," UD coach Paul Choi said. "Abington came out hungry in the first set and easily took it while Upper Dublin regrouped and tied it in the second set.
"Dublin fought hard to take the third set while Abington never gave up, forcing a fifth and final set. Abington put up a good fight, fighting back into the game with Dublin leading, but it was Dublin that prevailed."
The Flying Cardinals received big contributions from Bryn Stek, who had seven services aces and another double-double with 39 assists and 18 digs. Defensively, Josie Barrett (11 digs) and Maggie Welgos (12 digs) came up big. Offensively, UD was led by the double-double effort of Gabbi Johnson with 12 kills and 25 digs and the double-double performance of Jenny McAneney with 14 kills and 12 digs.
"It was a very exciting match against an Abington squad that is very dangerous in their offensive line," Choi said.
For the Ghosts, Leah Simmons (13 kills, three blocks, three digs) and Claire Gassman (seven kills, two aces, two digs) led the way at the net. Setter Emma Garg had 26 assists, four digs and four aces. Jamie Kidd led the defense with 25 digs while Kaylee Goodson had four digs. Grace Whitney (two kills, three blocks) and Hannah Dalton (two aces, two blocks) also contributed.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, PENNRIDGE 1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21)
The visiting Lady Rams managed evened the match at 1-1 with a win in the second set, but the Patriots went on to win the next two.
Jenn Krzeminnski had a huge night at the net for the Patriots, contributing 17 kills and four blocks. Natalie Arm had 10 kills, 2.5 blocks, 15 digs and four aces, and Kate Woolsey had eight kills. Also contributing were Krista Helveston (five kills, two aces, 10 digs), Devon Hall (four kills, three aces, one block, five digs), Erin Lane (two kills, five aces, 21 digs) and Morgan Beakley (five digs). Setter Madie D’Angelo had 46 assists to go along with one ace and seven digs.
For the Rams, Steph Judkins led the way with 18 kills, 11 digs and three aces. Rebecca McBride had six kills and four blocks. Setter Jessica Heckler had 23 assists. Maddie Mosser had seven blocks while Caitlin Saalfrank led the defense with 25 digs.
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, QUAKERTOWN 0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-17)
Katie Hudson (eight kills, two aces, one block) and Sophie Videva (seven kills, one ace, two blocks) led a balanced West attack in Thursday’s sweep of Quakertown. Setter Kayla King had 28 assists to go along with two kills and four aces. Julia Schweibenz added four kills, one ace, nine digs and one block, and Kailey Prall led the defense with 13 digs to go along with four aces. Lauren McNamee (three kills), Jen Martyn (four aces) and Tenley Mileski (four aces) also made important contributions.
NESHAMINY 3, BENSALEM 0
Setter Olivia Lynch handed out 22 assists for the Redskins. Miranda Foster had nine kills, 11 digs and five assists in an all-around performance. Jillian Willis had three kills and seven assists.
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3, HARRY S TRUMAN 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-19)
Elaine Budney (three kills, two blocks), Hannah Devlin (three kills) and Hannah Sullivan (four kills, four blocks) led the Golden Hawks at the net. Devlin (11 assists) and Kelsey McGill (12 assists) split setting duties.
SOUDERTON 3, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-9, 25-17)
Sparked by their strong service game, the Indians earned a non-league road win on Thursday. Defensively and at the service line, they received big performances from Savannah Bostwick (15 digs, five aces) and Talia Watson (12 digs, five aces). Setter Lauren Hamilton was credited with 36 assists to go along with seven digs. Haley Novak had a big night at the net with 12 kills as well as five aces. Melissa Gould had four aces. Also contributing at the net were Monica Miller (eight kills), Miranda Baronett (six kills), Tori Reiner (five kills) and Hannah Fainweather (five kills).
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, NORTH PENN 1 (25-21, 19-25, 30-28, 25-19)
The Titans won a tightly contested with the Maidens, breaking a 1-1 tie with a 30-28 win in a marathon third set and then going on to win in four.
"It was a really hard fought game," South coach Kurt Godfrey said. "The girls really dug deep and played very well.
"North Penn is a solid squad – they're a good team. It was a fight back and forth all night long. We were up three, they were up three. The girls played with a lot of heart tonight. They worked for this win, and they deserved every point that they got tonight."
Sarah Poli (15 kills, five digs, four aces) and Megan Manderson (12 kills, five aces, two blocks) had big games at the net. Setter Erin Cleary spent the night spreading the ball around, finishing with 43 assists to go along with two kills and five digs. Sophomore Alyssa Dallmer added five kills, three blocks and two digs, and sophomore Isabel Miller had six kills, two aces and four digs.
"My assistant coach and I tell them all the time that nobody is going to give us wins, nobody is going to give us victories," Godfrey said. "We have to earn it, and they certainly earned it tonight."
