MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Junior Francis Ferruzzi (Upper Dublin) turned in a top 20 time of 24:26.8 to earn 17 points for La Salle at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday. The Explorers finished fourth out of 21 teams. La Salle was the top finishing Atlantic 10 team in the race, beating out Duquesne and St. Joseph’s. At the Leopard Invitational on Saturday, junior Chris Berry (Central Bucks West) posted a time of 26:35.19 to finish in 25th place, earning 20 points. La Salle placed fourth out of nine Division I programs, thanks to its 118 points.
Temple senior Alex Izewski (Central Bucks East) finished 20th out of 181 runners at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 24:33.3. The Owls finished ninth out of 21 teams.
Penn freshman Sam Webb (Pennsbury) posted a time of 26:28.23 to finish 20th at the Leopard Invitational on Saturday. Penn finished third as a team.
Penn State Abington senior Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) was named the North Eastern Athletic
Conference (NEAC) Men’s Cross Country Co-Runner of the week with his performance at the Charger Invitational after placing first overall in the Charger Invitational for the fourth straight year. He set a course record of 26:48 in the 8K. Kane also led the Penn State Abington men’s cross country to a first place finish.
Kane finished his season strong, posting a 15th place finish out of 240 runners and finishing the 8K in 26:36 at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday. Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) posted a time of 29:27 to finish in 96th place, and Alek Clementson (William Tennent) finished with a time of 30:02.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
La Salle redshirt freshman Kaitlin Poiesz (Central Bucks South) finished in 28th place with a time of 22:08.5 at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday. The Explorers finished ninth in the team standings.
Elizabethtown sophomore Kelsey Brady (Council Rock South) posted a time 22:50.56 in the 6,000m run at the Interregional Border Battle hosted by Rowan University on Saturday.
Moravian junior Sarah Hughes (Souderton) posted a time of 22:07 to finish in 22nd place overall in the 6,000m race at the Rowan University Inter-Regional Border Battle on Saturday. Hughes finished first for the Greyhounds.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) connected on a penalty stroke in Villanova’s 4-3 loss to Rider last Sunday. In Villanova’s 3-1 win over Providence on Oct. 16, Kenney contributed a goal and an assist. Sophomore Megan Hamilton (Central Bucks South) assisted on Providence’s only goal. The game represented a reunion of former CB South standouts with Kenney, Mackenzie Harding (Central Bucks South) and Emily Cliggett (Central Bucks South) playing for Villanova, and Hamilton and Corinne Kenney (Central Bucks South) for Providence. All five CB South alums were in the starting lineup for their respective teams. Freshman Natalie Mitchell (Norristown) also was a starter for Providence.
Senior Emily Vasey (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist in La Salle’s 2-1 win at VCU last Sunday. For VCU, sophomore goalie Chessa Kownurko (North Penn) recorded 12 saves.
Lock Haven senior Rachel Valentine (Souderton) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Player of the
Week for the week ending Oct. 11. Valentine, the conference’s leading scorer, added to her total, scoring a goal in each of Lock Haven’s historic wins. She added a key insurance goal in Lock Haven’s 2-0 win over UMass. In Sunday’s 1-0 win over perennial national power Penn State, Valentine scored the game’s only goal in the 16th minute. It was Lock Haven’s first win over the Nittany Lions in 30 years. Lock Haven’s last win over PSU came in 1985. Valentine leads the conference with 12 goals. It marks the second time this season that Valentine has been named the conference’s player of the week.
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in No. 5 Kutztown’s 3-2 upset of second-ranked West Chester on Tuesday. It marked KU’s first win over a second-ranked team in Division II in 11 years.
Senior Alayna Brown (Souderton) scored a goal in second-ranked West Chester’s 5-0 win over Mansfield on Saturday.
Sophomore Emma Rosenthal (Central Bucks East) turned away 10 shots in Muhlenberg’s 4-0 loss to No. 4 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 upset of No. 7 Montclair, Rosenthal tied a career high with five saves, including two back-to-back shots late in the first half.
Kara Imes (North Penn) scored her fourth goal of the season in Delaware Valley’s 4-1 non-conference loss to Kean University on Wednesday.
Junior Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) scored a goal in Lehigh University’s 3-1 win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday.
Rachel Gorman (Central Bucks South) converted a penalty stroke for the game winner in Lebanon Valley’s 3-2 win over FDU-Florham on Wednesday. The sophomore defender lofted her attempt to the left side of the goal for the go-ahead goal with 18:54 left to play. The win was the fifth straight for Lebanon Valley.
Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) recorded 11 saves in top-ranked The College of New Jersey’s 2-1 loss to No. 8 Ursinus on Saturday.
Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a pair of assists in Quinnipiac’s 4-2 win over Siena on Sunday. The senior midfielder now has a MAAC-leading 10 helpers for the year and extended her scoring streak to four games in which she has accumulated a goal and seven assists for nine points. In Friday’s 3-2 overtime win over Sacred Heart, McCullough picked up a pair of assists.
Gwynedd Mercy senior Katie O’Neill (Council Rock North) was named to the CSAC Field Hockey Honor Roll for
the week ending Oct. 11. O’Neill totaled a goal and three assists in a 2-0 week, including a personal milestone. The Rock North graduate recorded her 100th career point in Gwynedd Mercy’s 7-0 win at Immaculata.
O’Neill contributed a goal and assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 5-2 win over Cabrini on Saturday. The Griffins remain unbeaten in CSAC play. In Thursday’s 10-0 win at Cedar Crest, O’Neill tied a personal best with three assists, and she also tallied a goal.
FOOTBALL
Junior quarterback Matt Johns (Central Bucks South) was 24-of-37 for 234 yards and two touchdowns in Virginia’s 44-38 triple overtime win over Syracuse on Saturday night. He also had 18 yards on the ground.
Rasheed Johnson (Norristown) had five tackles in Millersville’s 34-2 loss to East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
Redshirt freshman Craig Reynolds (Abington) caught four passes for 25 yards and had one carry for 15 in Kutztown’s 27-21 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday.
Brandon Shippen (Norristown) caught one pass for 13 yards in Temple’s 30-16 win over the University of Central Florida on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 31,372 at Lincoln Financial Field. The win tied the best start in program history at 6-0. As a result of the win, Temple is 22nd in the AP rankings and 24th in the Coaches Poll. This is the first time Temple is ranked since the end of the 1979 season.
Junior Alex Krivda (Pennridge) threw two touchdown passes in his first start at quarterback in Widener’s 40-10 route of Misericordia on Saturday afternoon. The Pennridge graduate exploded for 402 yards passing, completing 29-of-48 attempts. He also rushed for 38 yards on the ground.
Senior wide receiver Gerard Wendowski (North Penn) had six catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns in East Stroudsburg’s 34-2 win over Millersville on Saturday. It was his third straight game with 100-plus receiving yards. Wendowski has 32 catches for 569 yards and nine touchdowns through seven games. He has 26 catches for 490 yards and eight touchdowns in the last four games.
Junior running back Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named the Kenneth R. Walker Trophy Award winner as he had 121 yards on 23 rushes and a score in Ursinus College’s 21-17 loss to Juniata on Saturday. The Walker Trophy is given to the most outstanding player in the Homecoming game. Kelly also caught four passes for 38 yards. Senior kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on a 28-yard field goal.
Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) had seven tackles – including two for a loss and one sack – in West Chester’s 27-11 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday. Brandon Pepper (Pennsbury) had three tackles, including one for a loss. Shannon Mayer (Norristown) had two returns for 33 yards and caught one pass for eight yards.
MEN’S GOLF
Penn State Abington senior Mike Lam (Neshaminy) led the Nittany Lions with a 76 and finished in a tie for seventh overall at the Griffin Invitational at the Inniscrone Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon. Sean Ailtmar (Central Bucks South) finished 47th overall with 90 strokes. Penn State Abington finished tied for sixth.
MEN’S SOCCER
Austin Transue (Neshaminy) scored one goal and assisted on a second to lead Bloomsburg to a 2-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday. The Huskies got on the scoreboard when Kenny Herrmann (Neshaminy) tapped the ball in off a double assist from Transue and Stephen Pieri (Central Bucks South) in the 56th minute of play. Transue made it a 2-0 game with a goal in the 70th minute when he fought off a defender and slipped the ball past the goalie. Transue has nine goals and four assists to lead the Huskies in both categories. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Holy Family, Transue had two goals and assisted on another. The win was the 10th on the year for the Huskies, giving them double-digit wins in back-to-back years for the first time since 2002 and 2003.
Dylan McMahon (North Penn) contributed an assist in Marywood University’s 4-2 win over Immaculata on Wednesday.
Patrick Raykovitz (Neshaminy) assisted on a goal that knotted the score in West Chester’s 2-2 tie with East Stroudsburg on Tuesday.
Junior defender Mike Stuski (Council Rock south) played 107 minutes in St. Joseph’s 1-1 draw with George Mason in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday evening.
Junior Ryan New (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an assist in Cabrini’s 3-2 overtime win over Marywood on Saturday.
Keeper Jake Nesteruk (Central Bucks East) allowed only two goals in six shots in The College of New Jersey’s 4-2 win over Ramapo on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Rutgers Camden, Nesteruk recorded a game high six saves.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) scored in the 58th minute of Penn State’s 2-1 win over Purdue on Thursday night. It was her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Freshman Michaela Finneyfrock (Council Rock North) scored a goal in the 87th minute to lift St. Joseph’s to a 2-1 win at Richmond on Thursday evening.
Kristen Upton (Central Bucks South) scored her team’s only goal, and Sarah McDonald (Pennsbury) made four saves in goal in McDaniel’s 1-1 tie with Swarthmore in Saturday’s battle of unbeaten teams. Upton’s goal was just the second allowed by Swarthmore this season.
Freshman Alyssa Ryan (Wissahickon) continued her impressive freshman campaign, netting her fourth goal of the season after a breakaway in the 29th minute of Kutztown’s 4-1 loss to Edinboro on Saturday.
Junior Lexi Brown (Pennsbury) knocked in the game-winning goal in the 61st minute to lift No. 24 West Chester over host Slippery Rock 1-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) assisted on a goal in Elizabethtown’s 3-1 win over Moravian on Wednesday.
Kara Waskewicz (Souderton) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 3-0 win over Mansfield on Tuesday.
Sophomore Jessica Domansky (Abington) scored her first goal of the year in Penn State Abington’s 2-0 win over Lancaster Bible College on Thursday. Domansky scored a quick goal in the third minute of the game. In last Sunday’s 7-0 win over Morrisville State, senior Mallory Mugnier (Abington) contributed two goals and two assists. She now has five goals for the season and moves into second place in career goals with 23, tied with Kayla Nolan (Abington).
Annalise Shumski (Pennsbury) scored a goal in Cairn University’s 7-4 win over Summit University on Tuesday.
Megan Gerhart (North Penn) made two saves in picking up her second shutout in as many outings in Virginia Wesleyan’s 2-0 win over Emory & Henry last Sunday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Claire Ule (Wissahickon) earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at first singles in West Chester’s 9-0 win over Holy Family on Wednesday. Uhle also was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-5 win.
Taylor Michener(Central Bucks South) earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles and was part of the second doubles team that earned a 9-8 win in Gwynedd Mercy’s 8-1 win over Marywood. Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) earned a 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles and teamed with Jenna Caffarello (North Penn) to earn an 8-2 win at third doubles. With the win, the Griffins clinched the top seed in the 2015 CSAC Team Tournament, finishing the regular season 10-0 in conference play.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) collected her 1,000th career kill on Saturday in Kutztown’s 3-0 loss to
Mercyhurst. She reached the milestone on the third point of the opening set as she entered the contest with 999 kills. Head coach John Gump called timeout, and Stringer was recognized by the crowd and her teammates for the accomplishment. She is just the seventh player in KU history to reach 1,000 kills and has the sixth most in school history (1,014). In KU’s 3-0 loss to Gannon later in the day, Stringer recorded a team high nine kills and five blocks. Freshman Niki Carpenter (Upper Merion) finished with four kills, six blocks and three digs. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Edinboro, Stringer led the way with team highs in kills (seven) and blocks (six). In KU’s 3-0 win over Slippery Rock earlier in the day, Stringer had eight kills and eight blocks. In Tuesday’s 3-1 non-conference loss at Wilmington University (Del.), Stringer recorded a match high 19 kills. She also had five blocks and five digs. After Tuesday’s match, she had 345 career blocks, good for seventh in KU history.
