UPPER MORELAND 9, SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 8
The Golden Bears sprinted to a 5-1 lead after one quarter but needed a late goal by Brendan Costello – using a Matt Sippel assist – to eke out the dramatic win.
“We came out strong,” coach Ethan Fleming said. “Honestly, they kind of had a slow start, and we found a couple of gaps in their defense that they later on cleared up, so it made it tougher to score later on.
“It was the fact that everybody played well that kind of carried us. It was an all-around good team effort. The guys were ecstatic about it. It was a big win. With us and Springfield, it’s always a back and forth battle and up in the air who’s going to win.”
Costello finished the game with two goals and two assists. Tim Smith led the way with four goals while Sippel had one goal and two assists. Ryan McFarland added a goal and one assist, and Chris Johnston contributed a single goal.
The Golden Bears took a 6-2 lead into halftime and extended that lead to 8-3 heading into the final quarter when the Spartans reeled off five straight goals.
“There were a couple of slip ups and there were some missed slides,” Fleming said. “They found a couple of gaps in our defense that we had to recover from and do the best we could to hold them off.
“Most of their goals were early in the (fourth) quarter, and we had to recover.”
UM goalie Gage Reagan was credited with 11 saves in the win.

PENNSBURY 6, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 4
Ryan Michael scored a pair of goals in the third quarter, erasing a 4-2 halftime deficit and giving momentum to the Falcons in their come-from-behind win over the Golden Hawks.
“Council Rock South is a really good team,” Pennsbury coach Drew Artin said. “We have a very big senior class this year, and we rely a lot on our seniors, and every game is big for them. They want to play as much lacrosse as possible, and obviously, winning our first conference game is huge.
“Council Rock South is such a talented team, and this is definitely a big win. Beating anyone in our conference is a big win, but especially beating a team like Council Rock South is a big test for the guys and definitely a confidence booster.”
Greg Lichtenstein scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period, and Hunter Lake tacked on an insurance goal to propel the Falcons to the hard-fought win.
While the Falcons had the better of play in the second half, the first half belonged to the Golden Hawks, who led 3-0 after one period. A pair of Ryan Kelly goals made it a 4-2 game by halftime.
Jack Kelly was strong in goal, recording 11 saves in a winning effort.
“He played really well – he stood on his head and made some really good saves,” Artin said. “Our defense as a whole – we were playing really well as a team.
“In all aspects of the game, they just bought into our system. After two losses early in the season, they kind of realized they don’t want to lose every game, so they bought in and rose to the occasion.”
The Falcons’ coach went on to credit senior captain Brian Doron for helping to contain Brendan Patterson.
“Council Rock South’s face-off guy is probably the best face-off guy in this area,” Artin said of Patterson. “He’s definitely someone that can be a game changer for them, and we were able to kind of keep him in check.”
As a team, the Falcons came up with 29 ground balls. Zach Abraham was credited with five, Mike Montgomery and Lichtenstein both had four while Doron and Ethan Glynn each had three.
“Now that they know if they buy in it will result in some wins, and if they work together as a team, they’re going to be a lot more successful than playing as individuals,” Artin said. “Going forward, we have to build off of it because it’s a big step forward.”
Lake, Kelly and Lichtenstein each also contributed an assist for the Falcons.
