CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 19, UPPER DUBLIN 7
If coach Kelly White had any concerns about how her team would respond to Monday’s heartbreaking overtime loss to archrival Central Bucks West, she needn’t have worried. The Patriots raced to a 10-2 halftime lead on their way to the decisive non-league win over the Flying Cardinals.
“Our goal this year has been to finish – to start at the beginning and finish with a win,” White said. “We had that opportunity against West when we were up by two goals with about four minutes to go.
“I have to remember we are two seniors, and the rest of my team are juniors and sophomores. There are certain aspects that I just feel are growing pains when you have a younger team. I think what happened against West was proof of the growing pains, and we just weren’t able to control the ball in those high pressure situations.
“Coming in today was about not allowing a team to take the game away from you and owning the game from the very beginning and finishing the game and coming away with a win. West is a big rival, and it was a very emotional game. I was proud of the girls. I was concerned how they would come out, but they came out from the very beginning and they played to the very end and did a fantastic job.”
Maggie Vetter had the hot hand for the Patriots, finishing with seven goals and three assists in a standout effort. Michaela Daley also had a big night, contributing five goals and one assist. Riley Donnelly added three goals and three assists while Whitney Dietz and Mel Burian both had two goals and one assist. Katelyn Stout, Bella Ridolfi and Kaitlyn Mikalic each had an assist.
White lauded the defensive effort of Bella Ridolfi, Mackenzie Boyle, Kayla Bartl and Sarah Donnelly.
“Sara Donnelly is the steady player back there,” the Patriots’ coach said. “She’s the anchor of my defense.
“She’s the communicator, and she’s the one when I know she has the ball – I feel confident and I feel safe that she’s going to make a good decision. She can keep the team at bay when it becomes somewhat frantic. She’s calm and gets the job done.”
Goalie Anna Rosenquist was credited with five saves.
