BOYS
NORTH PENN 11, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 7
The Knights had a little score to settle when they traveled to CB South on Tuesday. It turns out they hadn’t forgotten their double overtime loss at the hands of the Titans in a game they led by two goals with two minutes remaining in regulation.
“We gave up a fast break goal and then we gave up a man-down goal,” North Penn coach Rick Smith of the March 29 season opener.
In Monday’s rematch, the two teams went into the fourth quarter deadlocked 6-6.
“It was never larger than a one-goal lead for either team until the fourth quarter,” Smith said. “We were neck in neck the entire game.”
The Knights scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to go on top 11-6 before the Titans scored with two minutes remaining, but it was too little, too late.
“The guys brought the passion, the fire and the energy, and we really put together a strong fourth quarter,” Smith said. “That was the difference in the game.
“The defense did well once again, and Matt Rinck did a good job in net. Once again, it was the face-offs in the fourth quarter that sparked us. We had some good transition goals in the fourth quarter that really made a difference in the game.”
Reese Udinski led a balanced Knight attack with three goals and two assists, Nick Keim had three goals, and Luke Homan, two goals and two assists. Jake Diamond added one goal and three assists while Eric Diamond and Nic Conroy both had one goal.
As a result of the win, the Knights join Central Bucks East, Central Bucks West and Hatboro-Horsham with just one loss in Continental Conference play.
“This was important,” Smith said. “I’m reminding the guys every day not to worry about the other team but just worry about yourselves. If you do your individual job, the team concept comes together.
“Sometimes as high school players, they want to overlook teams. Just the fact that we lost to them a few weeks ago as a team and we came back and we win – it just showed the character of my players that they never thought that we were down and out. They just came out and kept fighting.”
Smith credited Jake Diamond and Isaiah Lewis-Harris for their strong showings on the face-offs.
“They did a good job at the X,” Smith said. “Once again, it took us a little while. CB South – regardless of records, we battle. For the past couple of years, they had our number. Our kids were very proud to give a strong performance in the fourth quarter.”
For the Titans, Evan Falkowski and Joe Vitelli had two goals and one assist each. Mike Dutkiewicz had a goal and an assist. Austin Novick and Ian Vogt each tallied one goal.
