PENNRIDGE 10, NORTH PENN 8
Proud.
That’s how coach Karen Schnurr summed up her feelings after the Rams defeated the Maidens for the first time in more than a decade.
“This is the team that we have been coaching all season, and they came and performed,” the Rams’ coach said. “Every single person played with passion and determination. They worked as a team like I have never seen them work before.
“Even with the rain delay, Pennridge wanted the win, and they deserved it. I am extremely proud of their performance today.”
Jennifer Rodzewich led the Lady Rams with five goals, one assist and two draw controls, and Grace Loughery added three goals and three draw controls. Her third goal at the 11:13 mark in the second half was the 100th of her career. Casey Hefner added a pair of goals, and Maddie Dachowski had two assists.
Alex Machado led a standout defensive effort with 12 saves.
“Defense worked together as one solid unit,” Schnurr said. “Kira Ozer, Kelly McNally, Hannah Cressman and Emily Wentz came up with some great defensive stops.
“Machado had a fantastic game in net. On attack, the girls worked together and showed their control and patience. We have been working all season to use each other and wait for the best goal. They executed this plan to a ‘t’ and I couldn’t be more proud to call myself their coach.”
In a contest that was delayed for a half hour because of the weather and halted for good with 1:30 remaining, the visiting Rams opened up a 6-3 halftime lead on their way to the big win.
“Pennridge played a nice game and was clearly hungrier for the win today,” North Penn coach Heather Mellow said. “We came out slow again. With 12 minutes left in the game, we finally decided to show up, scoring five goals between the 12-minute and five-minute mark.
“Unfortunately, we put ourselves into foul trouble with two yellow cards back to back with four minutes remaining, which killed our momentum. With all the draw controls we won, we should have controlled this game, but we completely let it slip away.”
Chloe Novak dominated play in the circle, finishing with eight draw controls. The Maidens won 13 as a team.
Bri O’Donnell led the Maidens with three goals while Julia Keffer added two. Jenn DeLongis, Mikayla Barrow and Kaitlyn Phifer each scored one. Novak and Sam Tossona both had one assist.
Pennridge (8-5, 4-3 SOL) will travel to Springfield on Friday, and North Penn (6-5, 3-3) will host Council Rock North on Thursday.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 8, SOUDERTON 7
The Titans got a taste of adversity on Monday night when they received word that senior co-captain Sarah Poli, a four-year varsity mainstay, was lost for the season to a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
They responded by pulling together and earning their biggest win of the season, edging the defending co-champion Indians in a battle of the conference’s only unbeaten squads.
“She’s one of our key players, and we know we have to step up and play without her,” senior goalie Erin Putnam said of Poli. “We just want to win for her because she’s so dedicated to this team, and we knew we had to step up and do our best without her.”
Putnam certainly did her part, recording 12 saves and stuffing would-be Indian attackers on several occasions.
“In games like this, I know I have to step it up, and I mentally know how important it is to win,” Putnam said. “So I try to step it up as much as I can, and that just comes out in my play.”
Goals were at a premium for both sides in a first half that saw Courtney Dietzel put the Titans on the scoreboard at the 12:43 mark, sparking a three-goal run in a two-minute span. Kasey Dietzel followed with a free position goal to spot the Titans a 2-0 lead, but freshman Megan Walbrandt cut that lead in half with a goal. The Titans added a goal by Krysta Reading to go into halftime with a 3-1 advantage.
“We haven’t really had that much practice between the time Sarah got hurt, and it’s definitely hard to adjust,” Courtney Dietzel said. “She’s a huge part of our attack, obviously, so we have to change up plays.
“More people have to step up, and this game really showed that we do need those people to step up. Same with me, I definitely need to step up and take a bigger role on the attack. This game only showed that. They were undefeated in the league and so were we, so this was huge for us.”
In the opening minute of the second half, Kristen Berntsen scored to give the Titans a 4-1 lead. Souderton’s Leah Goodwin scored her first of three goals and then found Krista Schneider for a goal that pulled the Indians to within one. Anna Green scored on a crease roll to give the Titans a two-goal edge, but a Walbrandt takeaway set up a goal by Riley McGowan. Back-to-back Goodwin goals put the Indians on top 6-5.
“The defense was playing amazing the entire game, but we stopped moving our feet, and we were standing straight up,” Courtney Dietzel said. “We brought the ‘D’ together and said, ‘Let’s go, this is pretty much unacceptable.’ Everyone knows what they should be doing.”
Tori Wigand scored off the ensuing draw, and the Titans were off and running. Back-to-back free position goals by Berntsen and Courtney Dietzel put the Titans on top 8-6 before Katie Halteman connected on a free position goal with 6:48 remaining. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
“We had to change a lot of our offense, which is fine because we have a lot of contributors on attack,” South coach Janique Craig said. “It’s unfortunate with Sarah – that’s a huge loss for our team, but we have a lot of different scorers that can contribute.
“We’ll have some walk-throughs tomorrow, and I already re-did all of our offense, so we’ll go through that tomorrow.”
The Titans’ coach was especially pleased with her team’s defensive effort.
“We just played great, clean defense,” Craig said.
On the other side of the field, Lindsay Walbrandt had good things to say about her team’s defensive effort as well.
“They played phenomenally,” the Indians’ coach said. “We worked yesterday – we knew they would set some picks and screens on the ball, and they were going to want to drive righthanded.
“We talked about what we wanted to do, and they executed it phenomenally. (Goalie) Hannah Schmidt came up with some incredible saves. She blows my mind every day, and she kept us in it.
“We were getting opportunities, but we just weren’t finishing. That’s kind of been the story of Souderton lacrosse’s 2016 season – just the little things.”
As a result of the win, the Titans are alone atop the SOL National Conference standings.
“This was a huge game,” senior defender Jenny Haas said. “We knew if we didn’t win we basically wouldn’t win the conference because they were tied with us with no losses. Now we have to look forward to our next games and focus on those.”
