BASEBALL
Danny Long (Pennridge) became the first true freshman to start a season opener for Monmouth University since March 5, 2010, when Danny Avella started at third base. Long, who started at shortstop, was 0-for-2 in Monmouth’s 16-5 loss to Florida Atlantic on Friday.
Redshirt senior Conner Crookham (Hatboro-Horsham) was 2-for-5 with a double and RBI in East Stroudsburg’s 16-7 win over Post on Saturday in Holly Springs, N.C. Crookham is a preseason All-America first team selection at shortstop. Freshman Tom Nuneviller (Pennridge) hit a solo home run in the seventh for his first career hit. In Sunday’s 3-1 win over Post, Crookham allowed one run in 5.0 innings in his first career start. Redshirt senior outfielder Casey Saverio (Hatboro-Horsham) had two doubles, and Nuneviller singled and scored.
Nick Mulvey (Bensalem) was 2-for-4 in Gwynedd Mercy’s 4-1 loss at Kean on Saturday.
Freshman Cole Swiger (Upper Dublin) was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI in Bloomsburg’s 9-3 win over Pitt Johnstown on Sunday in game one of a doubleheader split. In an 8-7 loss in game two, Blake Gular (Souderton) was hit by a pitch and scored a run. In Saturday's 11-4 loss to the University of Charleston in game two of a doubleheader split, Gular was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the game's first run.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Ithaca freshman Riley Thompson (Council Rock North) took home Empire 8 Rookie of the Week honors for
the week ending Feb. 12. Thompson’s consistent offensive output helped the Bombers claim two conference wins late in the season. The freshman started off the week with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and nine rebounds against Elmira. The CR North graduate recorded 12 of his 21 points from beyond the arc. Thompson then scored 14 points against Hartwick, leading the Bombers to a season sweep of the Hawks. He went 5-of-11 from the floor, including four three-pointers. It is the second straight week Thompson earned the honor. The preceding week, he totaled 56 points (18.7 points a game) on 15-of-31 shooting in three games. Thompson also went 10-for-21 from 3-point range and 16-for-21 at the line. He posted back-to-back career highs with 21 points against Alfred on Feb. 3 and then netted 27 points the following afternoon against Stevens.
Thompson scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting and had five three-pointers in Ithaca’s 105-73 Empire 8 Conference win over Houghton College on Thursday night. In Tuesday’s 75-74 loss to Utica, Thompson scored a team-high 18 points.
Arron Goodman (Council Rock North) scored 14 points in Gwynedd Mercy’s 100-83 loss to Cabrini on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 93-52 win over Clarks Summit, Goodman scored 20 points. Jason Cavell (Council Rock North) dished out a career-high four assists.
Sophomore guard Jimmy Murray (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed 11 points and a pair of assists in Moravian’s 90-82 win over The Catholic University of America on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 87-80 win at Drew University, Murray netted 13 points.
Freshman Khalil White (Cheltenham) contributed 11 points and two rebounds in Penn State Harrisburg’s 66-53 loss to Marymount on Saturday. In Thursday’s 77-58 loss to Wesley, White scored 14 points.
Senior Jordan Reed (Wissahickon) contributed eight points and 13 rebounds in Tennessee State’s 68-66 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
Anthony Lee (Abington) contributed 11 points and three assists in No. 6 Kutztown’s 90-78 win over Millersville on Saturday. Senior Ryan Connolly (Souderton) added eight points and four assists. In Wednesday’s 96-92 win over East Stroudsburg, Lee recorded a double-double, the fourth of his career, with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Connolly fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. He also tied his career high with four steals. He went 4-for-4 at the free throw line to extend his consecutive free throws made streak to 27.
Sophomore guard Matt Penecale (Abington) scored eight points in West Chester’s 86-85 loss to Lock Haven on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 93-70 win over No. 12 Shippensburg, Penecale finished with 18 points and seven assists.
Tom Townsend (Council Rock South) scored eight points in Millersville’s 90-77 loss to No. 6 Kutztown on Saturday.
Senior Ryan Charity (Pennsbury) poured in 19 points in Cabrini’s 100-83 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 73-69 loss to No. 20 Neumann, Charity had 10 points.
Freshman Will Derr (Upper Dublin) pulled down a team-high six rebounds in Arcadia’s 97-94 loss to Hood on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 83-72 loss to Widener, Evan Slone (Souderton) scored 10 points and added eight rebounds.
Freshman Tracy Simsick (Souderton) poured in a season-high 18 points in DeSales University’s 76-67 loss to Delaware Valley University on Saturday. Junior Steve Ciotti (Pennsbury) buried 5-of-6 from the foul line and had a pair of assists.
Josh McWilliams (Council Rock North) recorded his second 30-point game of the season in McDaniel’s 73-56 win over Muhlenberg on Saturday.
Junior Zach Quattro (Hatboro-Horsham) led three players in double figures with 15 points and nine rebounds in Ursinus College’s 74-69 loss to Gettysburg on Saturday. Sophomore Zack Muredda (Pennridge) added six points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. In Wednesday’s 86-59 win over Muhlenberg, Quattro had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Muredda dished out a career-best nine assists to just one turnover.
Amir Hinton (Abington) finished with 29 points and seven rebounds in Lock Haven’s 86-85 win over West Chester on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 95-78 win over Cheyney, Hinton led all scorers with a game-high 21 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Widener junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton) eclipsed 1,000 points in her career to help propel the Pride to a
67-59 victory over Alvernia in the season finale for both schools on Saturday. Gallagher, who entered the contest with 994 career points, reached the milestone midway through the first quarter by nailing a pair of three-pointers to give the Pride a 7-3 advantage with 5:48 on the clock. The junior guard remained hot from the field and would drill another trifecta to make it 10-3 just over a minute later. Widener carried a 25-19 lead into halftime with Gallagher accounting for 11 of her team’s points. The Souderton graduate finished the game with 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. She also shot an efficient 8-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-9 from long range and a perfect 2-of-2 at the line.
"Allison made an immediate impact on our program by being recognized as the conference's Rookie of the Year and has been making strong contributions ever since she stepped on the floor," coach Alisa Kintner said. "We are proud of her for reaching this milestone, and we look forward to having her for one more season as a leader for our young team, which we expect to be better and compete for a conference title next winter."
In Tuesday’s 83-73 win over Arcadia, freshman Devan Rimmer (Pennridge) poured in a career-high 37 points. Gallagher caught fire by netting nine points in the final 10 minutes, which included canning a trifecta to put the Pride ahead 65-63 with 5:39 remaining. She finished with 18 points, which all came in the second half.

Junior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Penn) was selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference’s Student-
Athlete of the Month for January 2017. Tumasz averaged 13.6 points per game and 3.7 rebounds while additionally recording 17 assists (2.4 a game) and 17 steals (2.4 a game) over seven January contests. Tumasz shot 44 percent from the field (33-of-75), including 37.7 percent from three-point range (20-of-35) to lead Chestnut Hill to a 5-2 record in the month. The CACC Student-Athlete of the Month Award is handed out each month throughout the school year to a student-athlete who demonstrates success in athletics, outstanding achievement in the classroom and gives back to the community through charitable efforts. While earning a 3.81 grade point average, the biology major scored in double figures in five of seven January games. Her first month of 2017 included two 18-point contests. Tumasz also served as a defensive catalyst, recording two or more steals five times during the month, including a season-best six thefts against Felician University. A sharpshooter from deep, Tumasz recorded four three-pointers in four separate games. She recently earned recognition on the Chestnut Hill College Athletics Fall 2016 Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes who receive a 3.5 GPA or higher. She also was a member of the Chestnut Hill College Dean’s List and was nominated for the Delta Epsilon Sigma Honors Society. Additionally, Tumasz participated in numerous community service initiatives with her teammates during the 2016-17 school year. The Griffins volunteered with the Philadelphia Union. They also participated in the eighth annual Sole Sister Run with proceeds helping local clergy maintain convents and ministries. On Oct. 4, the Griffins volunteered at a soup kitchen in the Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. The Griffins also participated in Lily’s Loop, supporting premature babies and their families, organized a youth basketball clinic for the Northeast Frankford Boys and Girls Club and ran a basketball clinic for the Magic Girl AAU Somerton Youth Organization. Tumasz scored a career-high 27 points in Chestnut Hill’s 95-85 win over Wilmington University on Wednesday. She hit 8-of-17 from long range and made all seven of her free throw attempts while also recording four rebounds, five assists and a steal.
Senior Lauren Crisler (North Penn) posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in American University’s 51-46 loss to Holy Cross on Saturday. It was Crisler’s second double-double of the season. In Wednesday’s 75-45 win over Lafayette, Crisler contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Junior Michael Harris (Abington) added eight points and three rebounds during her team-high 28 minutes of play in her first start of the season.
Freshman Jordan Vitelli (Central Bucks South) tallied 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field in the University of the Sciences 65-59 win over Chestnut Hill on Saturday. The CB South grad connected on 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Sophomore Nicole Munger (Central Bucks West) contributed 12 points and five rebounds in Michigan’s 86-68 loss to Michigan State on Sunday. The game was played before the program’s first sellout crowd of 12,707 at Crisler Center.
Freshman Allison Chernow (Upper Dublin) doled out nine assists in Emory’s 79-68 win over Case Western Reserve on Friday, tying a season high. In last Sunday’s 77-56 loss to the University of Chicago, Chernow paced Emory with 14 points, her second highest total and sixth double-figure effort of the season.
Sajanna Bethea (Pennsbury) posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in St. Peter’s 71-63 loss to Niagara on Saturday. Freshman guard Sammy Lochner (Abington) matched her career high of 13 points. In Thursday’s 61-56 loss to Canisius, Bethea had another double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. In Tuesday’s 56-39 win over Fairfield, Bethea led the Peacocks with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Alysha Lofton (Central Bucks South) scored 19 points in Albright’s 70-63 MAC Commonwealth win over Messiah on Saturday. She also had five steals and two blocks.
Senior guard Rachel Falkowski (Central Bucks South) contributed eight points and four rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench in East Stroudsburg’s 60-54 win at Kutztown on Wednesday.
Alynna Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh) drilled five of her team’s season-high 11 three-pointers on her way to a 15-point afternoon in Philadelphia University’s 68-52 win at Holy Family on Saturday. Erin Maher (North Penn) recorded her first career double-double with 12 points an a career-high 12 rebounds. In Wednesday’s 86-81 loss to Georgian Court, Williams had eight points and five assists, and Maher had seven points and seven rebounds.
Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) finished with 12 points and six rebounds in Shippensburg’s 80-56 win over West Chester on Wednesday. With the win, the Raiders clinched their first PSAC East title. In Saturday’s 73-45 win over Cheyney, Knauer scored 10 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.
Freshman Lydia Konstanzer (Pennridge) turned in a stellar outing in Ursinus College’s 57-42 loss at the hands of Gettysburg on Saturday, finishing with 23 points, 12 rebounds and six steals.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Navy freshman Nash Nickerson (Central Bucks South) placed third in the three-meter diving event with 323.10 points at the Patriot League Championship on Saturday. Navy’s swimming and diving teams won the team title. In Thursday’s one-meter diving event, Nickerson finished third as well.
Albright sophomore Tyler Chamberlin (Springfield) won gold with a new MAC Championship record time of 2:05.37 in the 200 breaststroke at the 2017 Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships last Sunday. Junior Tim Resch (Springfield) also earned points in the event, finishing in 2:18.89. Adam Thron (Hatboro-Horsham) took 12th in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:13.79.
Arcadia junior Jacob Schellenberger (North Penn) placed seventh in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.53 at the 2017 MAC Championships. Freshman Mark Preedy (William Tennent) placed 11th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.42. Preedy was also part of the 400 freestyle relay that finished second in a program record time of 3:10.52.
Gettysburg freshman Ogden Leyens (Upper Dublin) posted a record-breaking performance in the 200 freestyle at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. Leyens won the 200 free while setting school, conference and meet records with an NCAA B-cut of 1:38.95. He won by nearly three seconds, and he nipped the former school and conference record of 1:39.02 that was set by his brother Ashton Leyens in 2014. He also topped the meet record of 1:39.78 set in 2011. The UD grad also earned a medal as the anchor leg of the 800 freestyle relay, which captured bronze in 6:54.61. On Friday, Leyens had a hand in two victories, capturing gold in the 500 free with a NCAA B-cut of 4:31.56 while lowering his own school record by over two seconds. It was Gettysburg’s first conference title in the 500 since 2012. Leyens also was part of the 400 medley relay that captured bronze with a time of 3:25.99.
Andrew Richey (William Tennent) was part of IUP’s third place 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:33.35 at the 2017 PSAC Swimming Championships on Thursday. He also scored points in the 50 freestyle (21.39).
Shippensburg freshman Jeff Beyer (Wissahickon) qualified for the championship final of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:42.58 and went on to place seventh in 4:39.10, just .08 seconds off his season best time, at the 2017 PSAC Championships on Saturday. He also was part of the 800 free relay that posted a time of 7:05.22 to finish sixth. On Friday, Beyer reached the ‘B’ group finals of the 200 free, placing 16th with a time of 1:44.88. He also was part of the fifth place 200 free relay that finished fifth with a time of 1:26.19. On Thursday, Beyer posted SU’s top individual finish, placing ninth in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:48.38. Beyer’s time is a 15-second season best and included 15 of his 20 splits below 30 seconds.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Arcadia senior Megan Obarowski (Council Rock South) placed fifth overall with her program record-setting time of 2:13.80 in the 200 butterfly at the 2017 MAC Championships. Freshman Rachel Samson (Council Rock North) placed 14th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:18.30. She also was part of the 400 freestyle relay that placed fourth in a program record time of 3:37.62.
Kutztown junior Bridget Perdoch (Pennsbury) finished 18th in the C final of the 200 breaststroke with a career-best time of 2:30.67 at the 2017 PSAC Swimming Championships. Her time was the fifth best all-time. She finished 23rd in the 100 breaststroke C-Final with a time of 1:10.21. Her time of 1:09.52 in the preliminaries was a career best. On Thursday, Perdoch was part of the 200 medley relay that finished 11th in a season-best time of 1:51.40. Perdoch swam a season-best time of 11:25.47 in the 1000 free.
Bloomsburg freshman Deanna Shuster (Pennsbury) scored for the Huskies as she finished 20th overall – fourth in the ‘C’ final – touching the wall in 1:00.55 at the 2017 PSAC Championships on Saturday.
La Salle sophomore Olivia DiStefano (North Penn) placed 11th in the 100 free with a time of 51.59 on the final day of the Atlantic 10 Championships. On Saturday, DiStefano continued her standout season by setting a new La Salle record in the 100 backstroke. Her record came during the preliminary races and was officially marked at 54.80 seconds, topping the previous record of 56.15 set in 2009. Later in the day, DiStefano finished third in the finals, clocking a time of 55.07. She had the top time among all sophomores. DiStefano was later part of the 400 medley relay that finished the race in 3:53.21. In the 3-meter diving event, Sydney Szopo (Upper Moreland) scored 237.95 for ninth place. On Friday, DiStefano took eighth place in the 50 free in 23.67 seconds. Her time was third among sophomores. On Thursday, DiStefano was part of the 200 medley relay team that finished 10th with a time of 1:44.73.
Tommie Dillione (Council Rock North) was part of Penn State’s eighth place 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:18.35 at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday. Hannah Zurmuhl (Pennridge) was part of the 200 free relay that finished sixth in a season-best time of 1:31.01. On Friday, Dillione reached the 200 free finals and swam identical personal best and NCAA B-cut times of 1:46.93 in both the prelims and finals to place 14th. She was part of the 800 free relay that finished seventh in a time of 7:09.40.
East Stroudsburg junior Shirley Samson (Council Rock North) finished in 20th place with a ‘C’ final time of 2:31.69 at the 2017 PSAC Swimming Championships on Sunday.
Sophomore Lauren Griffith (Central Bucks West) was part of Widener’s All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team 200 free relay that established a school record with a time of 1:37.81. She also was part of the second team 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. Griffith earned honorable mention recognition in the 50 free, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. Sammy Grogan (Council Rock North) received honorable mention in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Kutztown freshman Ryan Benner (Pennridge) set a new career-best and PSAC qualifying time of 6.94 in the 55m dash at the KU Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday. He finished third in the 200m dash with a time of 23.64. Jhaloni Johnson (Springfield) finished first and posted a PSAC existing time of 50.59 in the 400m dash. Anthony Bullaro (Morrisville) finished third in the 55m hurdles finals with a PSAC qualifying time of 7.95. Ogi Ogbonna (Harry S Truman) posted a career-best and PSAC qualifying time of 8:04 to finish fourth in the 55m hurdles finals.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Duquesne sophomore Shannon Taub (Council Rock South) finished third in the high jump with a mark of 5-5 at the Chipotle Invitational in Huntington, W.Va., last Sunday.
Monmouth University sophomore Allison Taub (Council Rock South) was named MAAC Field Performer of the Week for the week ending Feb. 12. Taub won the shot put with her throw of 46’ 3 ¼” to help the Hawks win the Monmouth Collegiate Winter Invitational. She also finished sixth in the weight throw, tossing 49’ 5 1/2”.
Shippensburg junior Lindsay Sheehan (Pennridge) finished fifth in a time of 27.69 at Kutztown University’s Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday. Lindsey Gerlach (Central Bucks West) finished first in a time of 11:19.00.
Kutztown freshman Olivia Morano (Quakertown) finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 36-00.25 at the KU Last Chance Meet on Saturday. She finished seventh in the weight throw (36-04.25).
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior setter Daniel Ford (Council Rock North) had 43 assists, five digs, five aces and two blocks in Saint Francis University’s 3-2 win over No. 13 Penn State University on Tuesday night (25-14, 25-20, 18-25, 21-25, 15-10). In Friday’s 3-1 win over Sacred Heart, Ford had 37 assists, two kills and 11 digs. In Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Harvard, Ford contributed 49 assists and eight digs.
Senior co-captain Christian Lizana (Pennridge) had a team-high 13 kills on 27 attempts, hitting .407, in Vassar College’s 3-1 upset of No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday. He also added four assisted rejections and four digs.
WRESTLING
Sophomore Jesse Huber (Harry S Truman) improved to 8-7 with his 22-10 win at 184 in York College’s 28-12 win at Gettysburg on Friday night.
Jeff Reimel (North Penn) earned a 7-6 sudden victory decision at 197 in Kutztown’s 24-16 win over Stroudsburg on Tuesday night.
