American Conference
HATBORO-HORSHAM 9, UPPER DUBLIN 6
In a tightly contested conference opener for both squads, the Hatters broke a 6-6 tie with three unanswered goals in the fourth period to earn the important win over the defending conference champions.
Coach John Kurek pointed to his team’s senior leadership as key.
“I have a nice group of seniors, and what happened was – in the last couple of huddles, I did some of the talking, but they really rallied the troops,” the Hatters’ coach said. “They talked to each other, they started saying to each other, ‘Hey, we got a goal in hand here.’
“It’s almost like they picked each other up, and that’s what I like most about this team right now. Their team chemistry has been outstanding in this part of the early season. I can actually see them growing together, which is kind of awesome. Hopefully, they can keep it going.”
Joe Larouche – who led the Hatters with three goals and two assists – scored the go-ahead goal in the final period, but also playing a major role was Brian Hood, who won 14-of-18 face-offs.
The game was a back and forth affair. The Hatters led 2-0 after one period, but the Cardinals came back to take a 3-2 lead. A goal by Logan Eldridge sent the two teams into halftime deadlocked 3-3. The Cardinals opened up a 5-3 lead in the third quarter.
“That’s when I started hearing my seniors starting to get together saying, ‘Hey, we’re not playing the way we usually do,’” Kurek said. “They made it 5-5, and they didn’t look back.
“One of the keys was Brian Hood at the face-off. He didn’t lose a face-off in the second half. He just kept taking the ball back for us. It was unbelievable, and it’s such a plus for us this year.”
Also for the Hatters, Tim McPoyle contributed two goals and one assist while Eldridge had one goal and two assists. Ian Reilly had one goal and one assist while Cameron Knox and Matt Barella both had single goals.
Kurek lauded the strong play of his team’s long poles – Chris McPoyle, Eddie Masterson, Drew Robinson and Jeff Marshall.
“Our game plan changed throughout the game, so I have to give it to our long poles,” the Hatters’ coach said. “Our one senior, Chris McPoyle, is our LSM, and he really gathered them together on the defensive side of the ball.
“Upper Dublin is still a talented team. They know how to play the game, they have different ways to score. It’s a good tradition there, so hats off to our defense.”
