CHELTENHAM 14, CHURCH FARM 1
The Panthers rebounded from a disappointing showing in Monday’s 20-5 non-league loss to Upper Darby to rout visiting Church Farm.
“We just plum didn’t show up on Monday – that’s pretty much what happened,” coach Michael DiPuppo said. “It happens at times, but you know what, when you think you’re going to go in and you feel comfortable that you can beat a team and they beat you by 15 goals, you kind of question things.”
There was no question that a different Panther team showed up on Wednesday, opening up a 6-0 lead after one period and extending that to 8-0 by halftime. CFS scored its only goal of the game in the third period.
“We had a really good day of practice on Tuesday morning, and we came out ready tonight, so that’s really all that matters,” DiPuppo said. “We kind of forgot about what happened on Monday and that ‘game’ and really stepped up and played well tonight, so we’re very happy.”
Tim McHugh had another stellar outing, finishing with six goals and three assists. Harry Stackhouse added three goals and two assists. Jade Siojo had two goals, Brian Noel added one goal and one assist while Alex Townshend and Daniel Lee had one goal each.
“Our offense really kind of sets the tone,” DiPuppo said. “You see it in the stats with Tim (McHugh). Even when we turn the ball over or they make a save and clear, our offense is really pressing our rides, which creates some nice turnovers, which happened tonight and created a lot of situations where we got the ball back and it gave us extra possessions.
“Extra possessions are going to give us better opportunities. Early in the season, we relied on Daniel Lee’s face-offs where he was averaging 65-70 percent on face-offs. These are our extra possessions that we thought we were going to get. Yet, we lose 16-3 to Council Rock North, so those extra possessions were not creating scoring changes.
“Whereas against Norristown and again tonight, they’re creating opportunities, and we’re playing team offense. Out of the 14 goals, we had nine assists. That means we’re working the ball around, guys are moving, and we’re finding the open man. When people are going to start keying on Tim, we’ve got to find people that are going to put the ball in the back of the net. When you have nine assists on 14 goals, we’re finding the guys that are open, and that’s what we’ve got to keep doing.”
Siojo led the defense with nine ground balls, and Lee won 6-of-9 face-offs.
Harvey Miller was credited with two saves in the win.
