UPPER MORELAND 8, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 7 (OT)
Twenty-four hours after edging Springfield in an overtime thriller, the Golden Bears were back at it again, this time eking out a win over the Golden Hawks when Jessica Flanagan scored the game winner in overtime.
“We played today like we know how, and after a tough week and not great chemistry happening within our team, we fixed it today,” coach Kim Frantz said. “We had awesome transition passing and the biggest thing, we played with heart today. This was our second OT win this week, but today we played together and came together as a unit. We never gave up and continued to fight for the win.”
Flanagan finished a big day with four draw controls, two goals and one assist. Senior Sydney Bachmayer also had a huge performance for the Bears, contributing three goals, two assists, two ground balls and one key draw control.
Emma Meakim had two goals and an assist, and Allison Felicetti – who had the game winner in OT on Wednesday – had one goal, one assist and three ground balls.
“Cassidy Hersh had one key draw control and played a great defensive game,” Frantz said. “(Goalie) Cheyanne Grumm had key saves that propelled us in the first half to get a four-goal lead.”
Grumm closed out the game with seven saves.
“CR South played a great game, especially on the defensive end,” Frantz said. “They really had great defense.
“Our defense stayed strong when South was putting a lot of pressure on us. Our defense – led by Mel Wittick, and Maddie Grace Wood – was together and worked as a unit. Meg O'Donnell also had a great day at the defensive end. The girls that didn't get time in the game were key to our win today by keeping us motivated and excited and alert to what was coming our way. Today's win was truly a total team effort, everyone was needed!”

HATBORO-HORSHAM 10, NORTH PENN 9 (OT)
In a contest that was an emotional roller coaster ride for both squads, it was the Hatters earning the exhilarating win in overtime when – on a free position – freshman Gabriell Liot passed to teammate Gabby Acker, who calmly deposited the goal into the net for the game winner just over a minute into the first overtime.
“We do a lot of stuff in practice with certain plays and certain stuff, and I just thought that would be the best choice,” Liot said. “I was thinking – should I shoot or pass it off, and in the split second before, I said – I’m going to pass it off.”
It led to the game winner, capping a special afternoon for the Hatters that also included senior Kaitlyn Wallace reaching the 100-goal milestone.
“She’s a coach’s dream – that kid,” coach Marie Schmucker said of the Penn State-bound senior. “She’s just very, very unselfish.”
Wallace entered the game needing four goals – she got them all in the first half, scoring the historic goal on a powerful 8-meter shot with 1:51 remaining in the first half. Making the accomplishment especially significant is the fact that she was sidelined for the better part of her junior year with an injury.
“I’m happy to achieve it because it was really hard sitting on the bench watching everyone play last year,” said Wallace. “I was kind of a year behind, and I never knew it was going to happen.”
Behind Wallace’s four goals, the Hatters led 4-3 at halftime, but the Knights – despite being two players down – took a 5-4 lead when Julia Keffer found the net at the 17:34 mark of the second half.
Two minutes later, Gabby Acker scored the equalizer. Her goal marked the beginning of a 5-0 Hatter tear that culminated with Olivia Tice scoring into an empty net after the Knights’ goalie was whistled for a foul.
The Hatters’ 9-5 lead seemed insurmountable, especially considering that the Knights – the recipients of four yellow cards – were down a player from the 10:33 mark on, and they were down two players when they received another yellow card with 7:47 remaining.
Back-to-back goals by freshman Grace Sacchetti made it a 9-7 game, igniting the Knights.
“She was the spark our team needed,” NP coach Heather Mellow said. “She had so many ground balls, she put in two goals, and she was on defense.”
Kaitlyn Phifer’s free position goal with 3:24 remaining pulled the Knights to within one, and when Bri O’Donnell buried a free position shot with 33 seconds remaining, the two teams were deadlocked, setting the stage for overtime.
“It was a little frustrating because we were up, but there was still a decent amount of time left,” Gabby Acker said. “We were trying to hold the ball, but as we were open, we felt as though we should shoot, and if the goalie saved it, that would turn it around. We should have held it longer. They were coming back, but in overtime, we didn’t give up. We weren’t down on ourselves that they came back.”
Emma Roesing won the opening draw in OT, and it was Knight goalie Kate Winstanley turning away a Hatters’ shot for the win. Loit came up with a turnover near midfield and then drew the call as she headed toward goal and was awarded a free position. Moments later, the Hatters were celebrating Acker’s goal that was set up by Loit.
“As a freshman, to be in that position – I remember starting my freshman year and thinking it was the scariest thing,” Wallace said. “To be able to be so poised under that kind of pressure is an awesome play.”
“It was a total team effort,” Schmucker said. “It’s all about strategy when it comes down to close games like that.
“They listened in the overtime period – they were unselfish. Gabby Liot forced the turnover, came up with the ball and went down. Everything we talk about – make them commit, find a teammate. That goalie thought she was taking the 8-meter shot, and she unselfishly passed the ball. It was just a total team effort.”
Arielle Hammer was credited with six saves in goal in the win, but what that stat doesn’t show is how aggressive the Hatters’ sophomore goalie was, repeatedly coming out and battling the Knights for ground balls. She came up with a leaping interception as well.
“Arielle – unbelievable in goal, unbelievable,” Schmucker said. “She’s smart, she has leadership qualities, and she’s aggressive.
“She’s only a sophomore. I’m very blessed and thankful to have her. She sees the whole game back there.”
Wallace finished the game with four goals and two assists. Camryn Ryan and Gabby Acker both added a pair of goals. Roesing and Tice each had one goal.
For the Knights, O’Donnell, Sacchetti, and Kelly McNamara each had two goals. Adding single goals were Keffer, Sam Tossona, and Phifer.
Winstanley – a standout ice hockey goalie who just recently went into the net – turned away seven shots in goal.
“She’s been unbelievable for us,” Mellow said. “For someone who just picked it up a month-and-a-half ago, she’s been phenomenal.”
Thursday’s game was the Knights’ sixth in nine days.
“We had one practice amongst those six games,” Mellow said. “We’re hurting physically and mentally. It’s just unfortunate.”
Hatboro-Horsham (6-4, 3-2 SOL) will travel to Pennsbury on Friday, and North Penn (4-8, 1-3) will be on the road at Pennsbury on Wednesday.
