American Conference
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 9, QUAKERTOWN 1
The visiting Colonials knocked the Panthers from the ranks of the undefeated in American Conference play, scoring six runs in an impressive two-out rally in the third to take command of the contest. The inning was highlighted by a pair of clutch extra-base hits from seniors Noah Goldstein and John Pecharo, who accounted for five RBIs in the frame.
“We started season in Florida really, really hitting the ball well, and we came back thinking that offense was going to be our strength, but we clearly have not been hitting,” PW coach Chris Manero said. “It’s interesting because some of our younger guys are starting to hit.
“They say hitting is contagious, and maybe it’s coming full circle today with our seniors.”
In the pivotal third, Jacob Nunez singled to lead off the frame, and he was on second base when Kevin Reilly stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a clutch RBI single that ignited the Colonials.
Justin Gelfand was hit by a pitch, and when Brad Krenicky drew a free pass, the bases were loaded for Goldstein, who emptied them with one swing of his bat, doubling to right center. Pecharo put the finishing touches on the inning when he smashed a two-run home run to put the Colonials on top 6-0.
The inning loomed large for reasons that went beyond the fact that it gave the Colonials a commanding lead they would not lose.
“I look at it as a coach, and it was really big because the two guys that got the big hits that inning were Noah Goldstein and John Pecharo, who are both seniors, who were both first team all-league players and who both have been really struggling,” Manero said. “I wanted to see these guys succeed more than anybody, and to see them come up and get big hits in big spots, it was awesome.”
Pecharo also earned an impressive complete game win in his first start of the season, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four and walking none. He needed just 71 pitches to get the job done.
“He really has been primarily our first baseman,” Manero said. “The role we’ve carved out for him on the mound has been more of a late innings guy, but we haven’t had a lot of leads, so we really haven’t had a need to bring him in to shut the door in the seventh inning.
“He hasn’t pitched as much as we had hoped, but with a four-game week, we know we need to throw more guys this week. To have him come out in his first start and pitch the way he did – he threw 71 pitches in seven innings, and that’s about as good as it gets. He threw 49 strikes out of 71 pitches, and the game was over in an hour and 45 minutes, if that.”
Pecharo also led the Colonials with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included a double, home run, two RBIs and one run scored. Goldstein was 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Reilly was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kliesh, Jack Mangan and Steve Longo each added an RBI.
“It was great to see them put it together, and I think that started with John on the mound – he had such a great day on the mound,” Manero said. “To get guys who going into the season you were hoping to rely on – to have those guys really come up big, it gave us a chance to do something we have been trying to do all year in terms of getting big hits and getting extra base hits.”
The Panthers – the number one seed in the first District One 6A power rankings released Sunday – were led by the 3-for-3 effort of Lake Friday that included a double and RBI. Matt Bukavich was 1-for-3 with a triple and run scored.
Devyn Bard absorbed the loss, allowing six hits and six runs in three innings. Plymouth Whitemarsh (3-9, 2-6 SOL) will travel to Wissahickon on Tuesday, and Quakertown (9-2, 7-1) will be on the road at Upper Dublin on Tuesday.
