Kevin Barron (Hatboro-Horsham) singled and scored a run in Campbell’s 4-3 loss to Liberty on Friday.
Junior Connor Laigaie (Council Rock South) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning in second-seeded Arcadia’s 7-3 win over third-seeded Widener in the opening round of the MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament on Thursday night. Nick Ponente (Council Rock South) singled and scored what turned out to be the winning run. It was the program’s first tournament win since 2013. In Tuesday’s 18-6 win at Gwynedd Mercy to close out the regular season, Ponente was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Shaun Stackhouse (Council Rock South) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases in Cabrini’s 12-8 win over Cairn University on Thursday.
Senior Kyle Wenger (Souderton) was 2-for-3 in Delaware Valley University’s 15-1 loss to DeSales
University on Saturday, representing the end of a historic career for the Souderton grad. Wenger finished as the school’s all-time hit leader with a career batting average of .448 (185 hits in 413 at-bats). He also finished first all-time in triples (16), third in hits (185), third in stolen bases (63), fourth in doubles (37), fourth in runs scored (127), tied for seventh in home runs (13) and eighth in RBIs (101). In Thursday’s 8-7 loss to DeSales, Wenger was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a record-breaking triple. His RBI triple in the fourth was his fourth triple of the season and the 16th of his career, setting the all-time program record. In Tuesday’s 16-15 come-from-behind win over John Jay College, Wenger was 3-for-5 with a double, RBI, two runs and a walk. In last Sunday’s 8-1 win over Clarks Summit in game one of a twinbill sweep, Wenger was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Senior Cory Capaldi (Souderton) was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored in Pace University’s 18-1 victory over Southern Connecticut University on Saturday.
Mike Christy (North Penn) hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to rally Elizabethtown past York 10-7 on Tuesday. Christy finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, home run and six RBIs. The North Penn grad has piled up 13 RBIs in his last four games and is up to 32 on the year. In last Sunday’s 4-3 win over Juniata in game two of a doubleheader sweep, Christy hit a two-out, two-strike, walk-off grand slam. In The Blue Jays’ 5-3 win over Juniata in the opener, Christy was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Anthony Rigous (Council Rock South) was 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in IUP’s 9-0 win in five innings over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday in game two of a doubleheader sweep.
Kadar Namey (North Penn) came off the bench to deliver a sacrifice fly to right field that plated the game-winning run in Saint Joseph’s 7-6 win over Delaware in 11 innings on Tuesday.
Sophomore David Drea (Central Bucks South) threw 6.1 shutout innings to notch the win in Ursinus College’s 6-4 win over defending champion Haverford on Saturday. He allowed six hits while fanning two and walking five. The win propelled the Bears into the Centennial Conference championship game where they fell to top-seeded Johns Hopkins 4-3 on Sunday. Sophomore Carter Usowski (Central Bucks East) finished the season with 53 hits, tied for the fourth highest total in school history. In Saturday’s 10-7 win over Gettysburg, Drea earned the win, pitching out of two jams and allowing two hits and one run in three innings of relief. Junior Matt Radwanski (Central Bucks South) allowed three hits and no runs in 1.2 innings in relief.
David Tatoian (Pennridge) drove in six runs, four of which came on a grand slam, in Gwynedd Mercy’s 15-6 win over Marywood on Thursday that secured a spot in the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament. The Pennridge graduate finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Nick Mulvey (Bensalem) had two hits with two RBIs and a run scored, and Shaughn Wright (Pennsbury) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Jason Mulvey (Bensalem) walked three times and scored twice while adding a pair of stolen bases. Zach Dennis (Central Bucks South) did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings in relief to close out the game, striking out one and walking none. In Tuesday’s 18-6 loss to Arcadia, Tatoian notched his 100th career hit, and Nick Mulvey tied a career high four hits. Tatoian notched the milestone in the seventh with a single through the hole to left. He becomes the 30th player in program history to reach the century mark. Mulvey went 4-for-5 on the day with a pair of doubles, which also tied a personal best, an RBI and a run scored.
Widener senior Greg McDonough (Wissahickon) was named to the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSDA) District IV Academic All-America All-District team. It is second all-district first team recognition. He also earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth second team honors. The senior has been a staple in the lineup since his sophomore season and has made the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team twice while also garnering All-MAC Commonwealth postseason laurels three times and ABCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors once. McDonough is hitting .299 to go along with 40 hits, 17 RBIs and 32 runs scored this season. In addition, he has stolen 20 bases on 21 attempts and has not committed an error in the outfield this spring.
McDonough tripled in Widener’s 8-5 loss to Alvernia in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament on Sunday. In Saturday’s 8-6 win over Lebanon Valley in an elimination game, McDonough was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. In Thursday’s 7-3 loss to Arcadia in an opening round game of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament, McDonough was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Junior Patrick Kelley (Central Bucks West) threw eight shutout innings to earn the win in Chestnut Hill’s 2-0 win over Bloomfield in Saturday’s opening round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament. He allowed just three hits while striking out seven and walking one before handing the game over to closer Dino Cottai. Brandon DiBona (William Tennent) was 1-for-3.
Starter Ryan Clow (Central Bucks East) pitched 4.2 scoreless innings before surrendering a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning of Kutztown’s 2-1 win over Bloomsburg in game two of a doubleheader split on Thursday. It was just the fourth hit he allowed. The senior struck out four in his final appearance at the North Campus Field. Matt Matricardi (Upper Dublin) threw two-thirds inning of scoreless relief. In Wednesday’s 7-5 loss to Chestnut Hill, Zach Schram (Council Rock North) finished the day 2-for-4.
Sophomore Jared Melone (North Penn) led the way at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in No. 13 West Chester’s 11-2 win over Lock Haven in game one of a doubleheader sweep on Sunday. The North Penn grad posted two of his team’s four extra-base hits with a triple and double. In the Golden Rams’ 8-3 win in the nightcap, senior Robert Knox (Upper Moreland) had three hits, one RBI and a run scored out of the leadoff spot. With Sunday’s sweep, West Chester clinched its first PSAC Eastern Division title since 2012. In Saturday’s 8-7 win over Lock Haven in game one of a twinbill sweep, Knox collected a career and season-high four hits, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs scored. In Tuesday’s 9-5 win over Wilmington, Knox drove in a pair of runs and Melone had an RBI double.
Redshirt freshman Tom Nuneviller (Pennridge) was 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and run scored in East Stroudsburg’s doubleheader sweep of Mansfield on Saturday. In ESU’s 4-0 win in game one, senior Casey Saverio (Hatboro-Horsham) was 1-for-2 with a walk.
MEN’S GOLF
Penn State Abington senior Mike Lam (Neshaminy) earned his second NEAC Golfer of the Year award after a
strong showing on the second day of the NEAC Championships. The Nittany Lions finished third overall out of nine participating teams. On day one, Lam finished six strokes over par, but the senior’s second day score of 74 was enough to move him into first place, only one stroke ahead of second place. Lam has earned NEAC All-Conference honors all four years of his career at Abington and earned his third consecutive First Team All-Conference award.
Penn State Abington senior Sean Ailtmar (Central Bucks South) finished tied for 19th overall with a two-day total of 171 strokes at the NEAC Championships.
Saint Joseph’s junior Tyler Sokolis (Central Bucks West) tied for 44th with a score of 71-77-79/229 at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Colby Eldridge (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the female Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Misericordia. The Hatboro-Horsham graduate, who earned 2016 ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction honors, carries a 3.98 grade point average in speech language pathology. She was named first team All-MAC Freedom and earned second team NFHCA All-Region status. Eldridge led the team in scoring with 20 points on six goals and eight assists. She was tied for third in the MAC Freedom, averaging 1.11 points per game. She started all 18 games and scored twice in a win over Delaware Valley. She notched a goal and three assists in a win over DeSales and tallied two assists in a win over Johnson and Wales.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Misericordia junior Chris Fleming (Upper Moreland) earned All-MAC Freedom honorable mention. The UM
graduate is fourth in the league with 3.54 points per game and fifth with 2.07 goals per game. He adds 1.23 assists per game, which is sixth in the league. He is ninth in the league with 3.54 ground balls per game.
Fleming had four goals and an assist in Misericordia’s 13-10 win over FDU-Florham in the MAC Freedom semifinals on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 6-1 win over Eastern in the MAC Freedom title game, Fleming had one goal and two ground balls. The championship was the program’s first in four final appearances. The Cougars earned their first ever NCAA Tournament berth while improving to 12-3 and setting a new school record for wins in a season.
Princeton freshman Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin) was named the unanimous Ivy
League Rookie of the Year and also was a first team All-Ivy selection in a vote of the league’s head coaches. He becomes the fifth Princeton freshman to be named first team All-Ivy League and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in the same season. He finished his freshman year with a program record 82 points on 41 goals and 41 assists. Only two other Princeton players ever had at least 30 goals and 30 assists in the same season – David Tickner (32G, 34A) in 1976 and Mike MacDonald (48G, 30A) in 2015. MacDonald’s senior total of 78 points was the record until Sowers broke it this year. Among his accomplishments, he also is the fifth player in Ivy League history ever to have a 40-40 season. The other four players who did so were Jim Trenz of Cornell in 1974, Mike French of Cornell in 1976, Rob Pannell of Cornell in 2011 and Dylan Molloy of Brown in 2016. In addition, Sowers joins Randy Mearns of Canisius as the only Division I freshmen ever to have a 40-40 season. Mearns, the current Canisius head coach, accomplished that feat in 1990. Sophomore goaltender Riley White (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had two caused turnovers and six saves in his first start of the season in Cabrini’s 18-6 win over Marywood University on Saturday to capture the program’s 17th consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference championship.
Sean Fechter (Pennridge) scored a man-up goal in Eastern University’s 6-1 loss to Misericordia in the title game of the MAC Freedom Championships on Saturday, breaking a string of five straight MAC Eastern Championships for the Eagles.
Widener junior Anthony Paone (Central Bucks South) was named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth second team. The CB South graduate is being recognized for the second straight season as one of the league’s premier face-off specialists. The junior has won a career-best 189 face-offs to date, which includes a career-high 20 in the team’s recent victory against Lebanon Valley. He also set career marks with 13 ground balls against the same two opponents.
Paone won 20-of-26 face-offs and scooped up 13 ground balls in Widener’s 12-11 win over Lebanon Valley to advance to the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth semifinals.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Albright freshman Devon Mela (Council Rock North) was named MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year and
earned All-MAC Commonwealth honorable mention. The CR North graduate led the Lions and is fourth in the MAC Commonwealth with 47 goals, averaging nearly three goals per game. She led Albright with 56 points and a .613 shooting percentage. She earned MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week honors on April 17 for her five-goal, seven-point performance in the Lions’ win over Hood. Mela had one of her two game-winning goals in that contest.
Mela scored two goals in Albright’s 14-5 loss to Stevenson in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals on Saturday. She finished her rookie campaign with 15 multi-goal games out of Albright’s 17 contests.
Abby Koptko (Council Rock North) recorded six saves in Elizabethtown’s 18-10 loss to Scranton in the Landmark Conference semifinals on Wednesday.
Sophomore Melissa Felicetti (Upper Moreland) scored four goals in Penn State Abington’s 9-8 loss to Cazenovia in the semifinals of the NEAC Tournament on Saturday. The Nittany Lions finished with their best season in school history at 12-2 while shattering almost every single team record in the book.
Penn State Abington junior defender Bridget Meade (Upper Moreland) was named to the NEAC All-Conference second team for her outstanding season on defense. As a team captain, Meade earned 20 caused turnovers and 27 ground balls, leading the Nittany Lions to a top three defense in the conference.
Penn State Abington freshman Veronica Baez (Upper Moreland) was named to the NEAC All-Conference second team. The freshman attacker finished second on the team in goals with 46 and scored a career-high eight goals in the final regular season game to clinch the Nittany Lions hosting the conference tournament.
Penn State Abington senior Molly Wyman (Abington) won her first NEAC All-Conference selection on the third team. Wyman was an important part of the midfield with 29 ground balls and 19 draw controls.
Temple senior Brenda McDermott (North Penn) earned All-BIG EAST first team honors.
The North Penn graduate was named the BIG EAST’s Attacker of the Week early in the year and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice since. She led Temple in both goals (42) and assists (32) this season with her 74 total points, ranking 33rd among all players in Division I. McDermott recorded 54 career assists to rank ninth all-time at Temple while her 32 assists this year rank second all-time for a single season. In an 18-16 win vs. Monmouth in mid-February, McDermott tallied six assists, the second most in a single game in program history. McDermott notched eight hat tricks in 2017, including six straight from March 25 to April 15. Her three game-winning goals tied for third in the BIG EAST, and she ranks in the top five in both points per game and assists per game. Overcoming a number of injuries to begin making her mark last season after three years of limited action, McDermott was named the NovaCare Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year at Temple’s Celebration of Champions on April 30. McDermott scored a career-tying five goals in Temple’s 21-9 loss to No. 2 Florida in the BIG EAST Conference Championships on Thursday. The Owls’ 13 wins matches their total from a year ago with both seasons tying for the most program wins since 2008.
East Stroudsburg junior midfielder Chessie Rahmer (Souderton) was named the PSAC Lacrosse Athlete of the
Week for the week ending April 30 after leading the Warriors to their first ever PSAC regular season championship. Rahmer had eight goals, two assists, five caused turnovers, six ground balls and eight draw controls for ESU, which extended its school record winning streak to 10 games with wins versus nationally-ranked West Chester (17-12) and IUP (16-8). Rahmer had four goals and one assist in both games last week. She had five draw controls and two ground balls in the win at West Chester. In ESU’s five games versus nationally-ranked PSAC opponents, Rahmer has 16 goals, two assists, seven caused turnovers, 11 ground balls and 14 draw controls to lead the Warriors to a 5-0 record.
Rahmer was named to the All-PSAC first team. ESU’s leader in goals (44) and points (54) entering the postseason, she is second in caused turnovers (33), ground balls (52) and draw controls (44). She has three or more goals in nine games, including five of the last six. Rahmer surpassed the 100-point mark this season as a junior, entering the PSAC Tournament with 91 career goals and 22 assists.
East Stroudsburg senior attack Lauren Green (North Penn) earned All-PSAC third team honors. The North Penn graduate is second on the Warriors in points (53) with 23 goals and 30 assists, and heading into the postseason, she is tied for third in school history in single-season assists. She reached the 100-point mark midway through the year and has 136 career points (92 goals, 44 assists) as a four-year starter. Her top assist games came against two of the top teams in the conference with one goal and seven assists in the 16-10 win over Mercyhurst and one goal and five assists in ESU’s 16-8 win versus IUP.
Rahmer had two goals while Green had two assists in East Stroudsburg’s 10-9 win over defending champion Mercyhurst on Sunday in the PSAC title game. Rahmer also had six draw controls. It is the first PSAC women’s lacrosse championship in ESU program history. On Sunday night, ESU received word that it had been selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Women’s lacrosse Tournament for the first time in program history. ESU, which has won 12 straight games, is the No. 3 seed in the South Region and will play No. 6 seed Florida Tech in a first round game on Friday. No. 2 seed Florida Southern will be the sub-regional host and will take on the winner in the second round on Saturday. In Saturday’s 11-9 semifinal win over IUP, Green had a pair of assists while Rahmer added a goal.
SOFTBALL
Senior Nicole Casagrand (Hatboro-Horsham), who earned the win in relief, did not allow a hit from the fifth inning on in UMBC’s 9-8 win over Hartford in game one of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. Junior Haley DeLany (Souderton) was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. In UMBC’s come-from-behind 4-3 win in game two, DeLany was 1-for-3 with a run scored. In Wednesday’s 5-3 win over Mount Saint Mary’s in game two of a doubleheader split, DeLany was 2-for-3 with a double and run scored.
Freshman Spenser Gray (Quakertown) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored out of the leadoff spot in UNC Charlotte’s 7-6 win over Middle Tennessee in game one of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. In Charlotte’s 8-6 win in game two, Gray was 2-for-2 with two walks and was a combined 5-for-6 with four runs scored and two walks in the twinbill.
Valerie Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to lead UConn to a 1-0 win over Memphis in game one of a doubleheader split on Saturday. It was her team-leading sixth of the season and added to her team-best RBI total at 21.
Brown senior Julie Schoenewald (Central Bucks East) earned the program’s Best Defensive Player Award at the team’s year-end banquet on Wednesday night. The CB East graduate – who served as captain for the third straight year – played in 39 games with 35 starts. She tallied a .250 batting average with 23 hits, which included five doubles, two triples, two home runs, 15 RBIs and 12 runs. She posted a .355 on-base percentage and .413 slugging percentage.
Fordham senior Lauren Quense (Neshaminy) was named to the 2016-17 College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District first team. She will now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot where first, second and third team All-American honorees will be selected later this month. Quense is a Business Administration major and currently holds a 3.56 GPA. Fordham’s senior ace leads the Atlantic 10 with 20 wins, a new career high, to go along with a 2.07 ERA, third in the league, and 113 strikeouts across a league-leading 182.2 innings. At the plate, Quense has drawn 35 walks, second-most in the conference behind teammate Jessica Hughes’ 49, and she has hit a personal-best five home runs this season, including a go-ahead two-out, three-run bomb to take a 4-3 lead against Dayton. The senior is among the top 10 in several all-time pitching categories at Fordham.
Quense allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a complete game win in Fordham’s 5-2 win over La Salle on Saturday. The win was the 20th of the season for Quense, who is the fifth Ram to ever accomplish that feat in a season.
Senior outfielder Bridget Hunt (Harry S Truman) singled home a pair of runs in Binghamton’s 10-2 win over Maine last Sunday.
Arcadia sophomore Jackie Bilotti (North Penn) was named the 2017 MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year. She also was named to the All-MAC Commonwealth first team. Bilotti is the first Arcadia player to be named conference player of the year since Jenn Compton was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Year in 2007. The 2016 MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year was named a first team all-conference selection for the second straight year. Bilotti led the team with a .431 batting average on a team-high 59 hits as she started all 38 games played this season. She ranked in the top five in the conference in seven different statistical categories, including hits, doubles (12), triples (4), runs scored (59), slugging percentage (.620), on-base percentage (.483) and stolen bases (21).
Bilotti also was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team. She will move on to the organization’s Academic All-America ballot. She is just the second player in program history to be named to the Academic All-District Team. The early childhood and special education major holds a 3.94 GPA. As a freshman, she was named the MAC Commonwealth and ECAC Division III South Rookie of the Year while also being selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region Third Team and the Academic All-MAC Team.
Bilotti had a pair of hits in Arcadia’s 1-0 win in 19 innings over top-seeded and nationally-ranked Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament on Saturday. It is the third longest game in NCAA Division III history.
Lauren Creamer (Neshaminy) hit an RBI double in Susquehanna’s 5-1 win over Juniata to stay alive in the double elimination Landmark Conference Tournament on Saturday.
Marywood senior captain Brooke Labs (Pennridge) was named the Colonial States Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for the week ending April 30. Labs led Marywood to a 3-1 CSAC week and the top seed in the playoffs by hitting .818 (9-for-11) at the plate with three doubles, a homer, seven RBIs and six runs scored. She had a 1.364 slugging percentage and an .857 on-base percentage.
Sophomore Marissa Alpaugh (Pennsbury) was 1-for-3 with an RBI in Cabrini’s 5-2 loss to Neumann University in the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship round on Saturday. In Thursday’s 13-1 win over Marywood in an opening round game, senior Taylor Gallagher (Central Bucks South) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Alyssa Willkinson (Quakertown) earned the first complete game win of her career in Elizabethtown’s 7-3 win over Juniata in game two of a doubleheader split last Sunday.
Penn State Abington junior Becca Dougherty (Council Rock South) was named to the All-NEAC South first team. The junior pitcher recorded a 3.79 ERA that put her in the top 15 in the conference, and she finished in the top three in shutouts with four this season. At the plate, Dougherty finished seventh in the NEAC in RBIs (29), sixth in hits (44), and fourth in doubles (12).
Penn State Abington sophomore Caitlin Brasier (Harry S Truman) earned All-NEAC South second team honors. The Truman graduate finished third for the Nittany Lions with a .354 batting average and finished second in RBIs with 28 for the season.
Brasier was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs in Penn State Abington’s 10-3 win over Cazenovia in an elimination game in the NEAC Tournament on Sunday. Dougherty was 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run.
Emily Wrenn (Hatboro-Horsham) earned her 38th career win to make her the all-time winningest pitcher for the Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions fell to Keuka College 11-10 in their next game on Sunday. In Saturday’s 5-3 win over Wilson College, Brasier slammed a two-run home run to center field. In Friday’s 1-0 loss to Penn College in the opening round of the NEAC Tournament, Emily Wrenn (Hatboro-Horsham) only allowed six hits in seven innings of work. Wrenn didn’t give up a single earned run in the game as the Wildcats scored on a walk-off error.
Lycoming sophomore Liz Nace (Pennridge) earned the MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week award for the week ending April 30. Nace went 3-0 with three complete game victories, two of which were shutouts. She finished the week with a 0.35 ERA, allowing just one run over 20 innings of work. Nace tossed an 85-pitch four-hit shutout against Elmira and followed that with a 95-pitch 5-0 win over Widener. She capped the week allowed five hits in a complete game 9-1 win over Misericordia. Jovanna Alfonsi (North Penn) was 2-for-5 in Philadelphia University’s 3-2 win over Felician on Thursday to keep the Rams alive in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament. In Thursday’s 3-2 win over Georgian Court in an opening round game, Alfonsi was 2-for-5. In last Sunday’s 8-4 win over Georgian Court in game one of a twinbill sweep, Alfonsi hit a two-run double.
Freshman Meghan Klee (Quakertown) was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Maddie Mull (Quakertown) also had a base hit in Shippensburg’s 6-5 loss to Lock Haven in an elimination game of the 2017 PSAC Championships held on Saturday at Veterans Park in Quakertown. Klee hit .438 in the PSAC Championships (7-for-16) while Mulhall had three hits and drew two walks as both played in their hometown for the first time as collegiate athletes. In Wednesday’s opening round 5-4 win over IUP in eight innings, Klee had two hits.
Becki Christoffers (North Penn) was 2-for-3 with an RBI in sixth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy’s season-ending loss to third-seeded Immaculata in the opening round of the 2017 CSAC Softball Tournament on Wednesday. The game marked the end for senior Nikki Canfield (Souderton), who leaves the program as the all-time leader in doubles (25) and in a tie for most games started (143) as she has started every game in the last four years.
Michelle Holweger (North Penn) tallied five hits and drove in four runs over a three-game span Saturday that saw Lock Haven win three straight games after dropping its opener in the 2017 PSAC tournament on Thursday. Lock Haven defeated Cal of Pa. (6-1), Gannon (8-4) and Shippensburg (6-5). Holweger was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the win over Shippensburg. In Lock Haven’s 10-2 loss in five innings to Seton Hill in Wednesday’s opening round game, Holweger hit a two-run home run.
Christina Bascara (Pennsbury), Jackie Heim (William Tennent), and Mackenzie Obert (Pennsbury) each had a pair of hits in La Salle’s 3-2 win over Rider on Wednesday. Suzanne Swanicke (Pennsbury) had an RBI in a win that clinched the program’s first 20-win season since 2008.
Widener senior utility player Ally Horvath (Central Bucks South) earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth first team honors. The CB South graduate, who has split time between playing left field and pitching, is earning postseason recognition for the third straight season. She has ranked number one or number two nationally in stolen bases this season and has successfully stolen 37 of 40 bases to date. Horvath is leading the team in batting average (.379), hits (44) and runs scored (31) and is among the league leaders in all three categories. In the circle, she has been the team’s number two pitcher and boasts an 8-3 record along with a 2.38 earned run average.
Freshman designated player Jamie Gosselin (Abington) earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth second team recognition. The Abington graduate has been one of the best freshmen in the conference at any position this spring. She concluded the regular season with a .359 batting average to go along with 33 hits, 15 RBIs, 25 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. She most notably hit a walk-off grand slam to lead the Pride to a 6-4 victory and cap a doubleheader sweep against Albright on April 13 and also ranks second on the team with a .427 on-base percentage.
Jamie Gosselin (Abington) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs while teammate Ally Horvath (Central Bucks South) had a two-run double in Widener’s 4-3 win over Lebanon Valley in Sunday’s Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth championship game, punching its ticket to the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament for the first time ever. Horvath picked up the win by throwing five innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out two. It is the program’s first ever championship.
Junior Emily Mayhew (Pennridge) had a pair of hits, including the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning in Bloomsburg’s 7-3 win over Gannon in extra innings in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament on Thursday. Bridget Casey (Pennridge) doubled and scored. In Wednesday’s opening round 16-0 win over Kutztown, Mayhew was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Joseph Leconey (North Penn) and Chris Trimble (North Penn) were part of La Salle’s second place 4x800m relay team that posted a time of 7:34.32 at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships.
Sophomore Sean Stovall (Springfield Township) was part of Widener’s winning 4x400m relay that posted a winning time of 3:21.58 at the 2017 MAC Championships and captured All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team honors. The Pride captured the 20th championship in program history. Alex Cucciarre (Souderton) placed fourth in the javelin with a toss that traveled 167-6.50, earning All-Middle Atlantic Conference second team honors in the javelin and shot put. Stovall earned second team honors in the 400m hurdles.
Bloomsburg junior Alex Moran (Pennridge) was eighth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.76 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. James Wilson (Central Bucks South) was part of the 4x400m relay that finished 10th with a time of 3:23.06. Matthew Hart (Pennsbury) finished 17th in the javelin with a throw of 48.36 meters. On Friday, Wilson finished 13th in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.68. Hart was eighth in shot put with a throw of 13.44 meters, and he also was 14th in the hammer throw (39.91 meters).
Lock Haven junior Julien Freeman (Harry S Truman) placed fifth overall in the long jump with a leap of 45-8 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday. Lamier Dodson (Bensalem) finished sixth in the hammer throw finals with a mark of 166-06 feet. Henry Colby (William Tennent) finished seventh in the 10,000m run with a time of 32:14.04.
Shippensburg junior Alex Balla (Quakertown) finished fifth in the 5K with a time of 15:04.57 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. It was his second consecutive fifth-place finish in the event. Shippensburg won its ninth consecutive team championship.
Kutztown junior Brandon Raguz (Central Bucks South) won the final PSAC Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of
the Week award of the regular season last Tuesday after taking home the pole vault title at the Shippensburg Paul Kaiser Classic. The award is Raguz’s second career weekly honor from the league as he also took home a PSAC Field Athlete of the Week award during the 2017 indoor season.
Raguz finished second in the pole vault for the second year in a row at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, clearing a career-best 4.91m (16-01.25) to move from eighth to sixth all-time in Kutztown history and pick up eight points. The height moved the junior into a tie for 20th in the NCAA this outdoor season. Jhaloni Johnson (Springfield Township) placed fourth in the 400m, crossing the finish line in 48.28. Anthony Bullaro (Pennsbury) placed fourth in the 110m hurdles for the second straight season after finishing in 15.00 to highlight a two-point performance for KU in the hurdles. On Friday, Johnson set two NCAA provisionals while moving into the top four in program history in two events. Johnson qualified in second in both the 200m and 400m. His time of 21.42 in the 200m improved him from seventh to third all-time while he finished the 400m in 47.92 to improve from eighth to fourth all-time with the fastest time by a Golden Bear since 2002. Both times rank in the top 50 of the NCAA this outdoor season.
Shawn Young (Central Bucks West) was part of West Chester’s eighth place 4x400m relay team that finished with a time of 3:22.07 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
East Stroudsburg senior Sean Hagerty (Pennridge) finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 22-3 ½ at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Duquesne sophomore Shannon Taub (Council Rock South) captured silver in the high jump (1.70m) at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships on Saturday. In the Saint Francis Red Flash Open last Saturday, Taub finished first in the triple jump (30-10).
Monmouth sophomore Brianna Stratz (Central Bucks South) finished first in the 800m preliminaries to secure a spot in the finals of the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships. Amber Stratz (Central Bucks South) qualified for the finals in the 1500m with a time of 4:41.31.
Ursinus senior Erin Farrell (Neshaminy) earned spots in a pair of sprinting finals on Saturday at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships. She recorded a 13.59 to squeak out an eighth place finish in the 100m dash, edging the ninth place runner by one hundredth of a second. Farrell’s 200m dash was less stressful as her time of 26.81 was good for fifth in the prelims. Sophomore Riley Engel (Council Rock North) and senior Samantha Innes (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of Ursinus College’s seventh place 4x800m relay squad that posted a time of 10:53.19.
Maria Antoni (Upper Moreland) and Sophie Carrabba (Abington) were part of Shippensburg’s first place 4x800m relay team that posted a time of 9:49.90 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Freshman Dior Alston (Cheltenham) captured gold in the 400m with a time of 57.48. Lindsay Sheehan (Pennridge) was part of the second place 4x100m relay. Shippensburg captured its eighth consecutive team title. On Friday, Lindsey Gerlach (Central Bucks West) finished fifth in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 11:44.13. The performance is an improvement of four places and eight seconds from her ninth place finish as a freshman last year. Sophomore Jackie Kinkead (Central Bucks East) placed fifth in the 10K in a new personal best time of 37:50.06. She closed with an 80-second final lap to edge Kutztown’s Alexis Dongvort by three seconds. Kinkead came within a second of fourth place.
Moravian junior Beth Ann Davies (Quakertown) won the pole vault for the second straight year at the 2017 Landmark Conference Championships with a winning height of 3.04 meters (9-11.75). Senior Lauren Suelke (Quakertown) placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.05 meters (16-7), and junior Casie Cronk (Quakertown) was eighth with a leap of 4.74 meters (15-6.75) to earn points in the team standings.
La Salle’s Kaitlin Poiesz (Central Bucks South) placed 13th in a field of 35 runners in the 5000m when she clocked a time of 17:31.51 at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships on Sunday.
Junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton) was part of Widener’s second place 4x400m relay which posted a time of 4:07.60. Gallagher was fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:08.96 and sixth in the 100 hurdles in 16.12, earning All-Middle Atlantic Conference second team honors.
Kutztown sophomore Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) finished a career-best eighth in the 1500 run, posting a time of 4:51.12 to earn KU a point in the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Olivia Morano (Quakertown) finished 20th in the discus throw with a throw of 34.11m (111-11).
Emily Dusellier (Souderton) was part of West Chester’s first place 4x800m relay team that posted a winning time of 9:18.85 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. It was the second best time in program history. Jasmine Noble (Central Bucks South) and Emily Magnant (Hatboro-Horsham) were both part of the 4x100m relay team that finished first in 47.28 seconds. On Friday, Dusellier placed fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:13.6. Caroline DiJiosia (Plymouth Whitemarsh) placed eighth in the heptathlon with 3,943 points. Emily Magnant (Hatboro-Horsham) qualified for the finals of the 200m dash by placing seventh overall with a time of 25.41.
Bloomsburg senior Keelan McDonald (Central Bucks West) finished sixth in the 5000m run with a time of 17:51.72 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Senior Jessica Quesenberry (Wissahickon) finished ninth with a time of 18:06.10. On Friday, Quesenberry finished second in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:07.51. On Thursday, McDonald took second place in the 10,000m run, giving the Huskies eight points.
Sophomore Leiana Dean (North Penn) was part of East Stroudsburg’s third place 4x100m relay that posted a time of 47.64 at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. The time ranks No. 4 in program history for the women.
