MEN’S BASKETBALL
Amir Hinton (Abington) scored 28 points, which included a 15-for-18 effort at the foul line, in Lock Haven’s 78-70 loss to Shaw University on Saturday. In Friday’s 72-69 loss to regionally-ranked Virginia Union, Hinton, the PSAC’s leading scorer and Rookie of the Year last year, scored 34 points. He shot 11-for-21 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the foul line and knocked down four three-pointers. He also had a game-high eight rebounds and five steals.
Redshirt junior Anthony Lee (Abington) tied a school record with eight three-pointers made in Kutztown’s 135-80 win over Penn State Schuylkill on Saturday. Lee’s game-high 34 points is a new career high. He shot 12-of-13 from the field, including 8-of-9 from three-point range. Senior captain Demetrius Bennett (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had seven points, three rebounds and three assists. Joseph O’Brien (Abington) added four points and two steals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Jordan Vitelli (Central Bucks South) scored a career-high 27 points in No. 16 University of the Sciences 73-67 come-from-behind win over Le Moyne on Saturday. The CB South graduate had a pair of three-pointers in a 10-0 USciences run that erased a seven-point deficit early in the fourth quarter. Seventeen of Vitelli’s points came in just 19 minutes in the second half. She made 6-of-11 shots from beyond the arc and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, both of which matched a career best. In Friday’s, 65-56 victory over Southern New Hampshire, Vitelli scored 13 points, which included three three-pointers.
Junior Nicole Munger (Central Bucks West) had 13 points – which included three three-pointers – and three steals in No. 24 Michigan’s 74-50 win over Liberty in the second round of the Preseason WNIT on Sunday. In Friday’s 75-61 over George Mason in the Preseason WNIT opener, Munger had 14 points.
Senior Sajanna Bethea (Pennsbury) contributed eight points and nine rebounds in Saint Peter’s 91-49 loss to Seton Hall on Friday.
Redshirt senior Alexis Hofstaedter (Council Rock South) finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in Holy Family’s 56-47 loss to Franklin Pierce University on Saturday night on the final day of the CACC/NE10 Tip-Off Challenge.
Redshirt junior Erin Maher (North Penn) scored 13 points in Jefferson University’s 60-54 win over Queens on Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Penn) recorded 11 points, three steals and six points in Chestnut Hill’s 84-67 win over Queens College at the Jefferson Challenge on Sunday. In Saturday’s 55-46 win over Molloy College, Tumasz recorded a team-high 21 points. She also had four steals, four rebounds and went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Taylor Thames (North Penn) made all four of her free throws and scored six points in Kutztown’s 53-35 loss to Bowie State at Shippensburg’s Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic on Friday.
Albright senior Alysha Lofton (Central Bucks South) was named a Preseason All-American in the Women’s DIII News Preseason Preview. In her junior season, Lofton finished the year shooting 53 percent from the field
while nearly averaging a double-double, scoring 11.8 points a game while grabbing 9.4 rebounds per game. The All-MAC Commonwealth First Team selection finished the season ranked second in the league in rebounding (9.4 rpg) and second in double-doubles (13). In addition to those numbers, Lofton also had 21 double-digit scoring efforts.
She ranked third in the conference in steals (76) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3). Lofton was a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American selection and won two MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week awards while picking up an ECAC Player of the Week award. Lofton returns for her senior season in 2017-18 with an Albright team coming off its second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. Albright is ranked 14th in the issue’s preseason poll.
Senior Michael Harris (Abington) tied her career high with 16 points in American University’s 72-67 win over Tulsa on Friday night.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Villanova sophomore Casey Comber (Hatboro-Horsham) finished second with a time of 30:31.7 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday, earning Mid-Atlantic All-Region honors. The Hatboro-Horsham graduate is guaranteed a berth to the national meet. The Wildcats finished third as a team.
Ursinus sophomore Logan Mazullo (Central Bucks West) wound up just inside the top 200 with a mark of 28:29.7 at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship on Saturday. The Bears set a new program record by finishing 22nd overall.
Shippensburg senior Alex Balla (Quakertown) posted his third consecutive top 5 finish at a regional championship meet, finishing third overall at the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship last Saturday, posting a time of 30:56.7. Brian Iatarola (Central Bucks West) finished 44th with a time of 32:57.9. Shippensburg won the team championship.
Chestnut Hill’s Aaron Morris (Springfield Township) finished 68th with a time of 36:20.7 at the NCAA East Region Championships last Saturday.
Bloomsburg sophomore Declan McDonald (Central Bucks West) finished 42nd with a time of 32:55.1 at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships last Saturday. Bloomsburg finished sixth as a team.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown senior Kelsey Brady (Council Rock South) earned first All-Landmark honors after finishing runner-up in the Landmark Conference Championships. Brady, who finished fifth at last year’s championship race, earned her second straight All-Landmark first team honors.
St. Joseph’s sophomore Meridith Twomey (Pennsbury) posted a personal record of 22:51.1 as the Hawks’ sixth runner at the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday.
Shippensburg junior Jackie Kinkead (Central Bucks East) finished 10th with a time of 21:40.8 at the 2017 NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships last Saturday. Shipensburg placed second as a team.
Kutztown junior Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) finished 18th out of 150 runners with a time of 21:54.4 at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals last Saturday, earning All-Region honors. She improved upon her 19th pace finish from a year ago. Bresadola has finished in the top 20 overall in all six meets and has paced the KU lineup in each one.
MEN’S FIELD HOCKEY
Christian DeAngelis (Central Bucks West) earned USA’s Player of the Week honors during the U.S. U-21 Men’s National team’s trip to Malaysia for the Sultan of Johor Cup in late October. The Central Bucks West graduate was a workhorse for USA. Constant running and pressuring in one-sided games is not easy, but DeAngelis – who has a bright future – played hard all week until the final whistle.
FIELD HOCKEY
Misericordia senior Colby Eldridge (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the
Year. Eldridge, a forward, was named to the first team for the fourth consecutive season. She led the team in scoring with 30 points on 11 goals and eight assists, including a team-high four game-winning goals. She had at least one point in five of seven MAC Freedom games, including four multi-point games. She had a goal and assist in wins over Eastern, DeSales and Wilkes and had two assists in a win over DeSales.
Eldridge also was named the Misericordia University Wendy’s Athlete of the Month for October. The senior forward led the field hockey team to a 7-1 record during the month, including a seven-game winning streak. She had six goals and three assists, and Misericordia ended the month on a four-game goal-scoring streak as the Cougars clinched the number two seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament.
Kutztown University senior Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) completed her career with four consecutive All-PSAC honors, the first Golden Bear to do that since the 2013 season. The PW graduate earned third team honors. In her senior campaign, Konowal tallied three goals and three assists playing in both the midfield and forward positions. For her career, Konowal started all 73 games, racking up 12 goals and 12 assists.
Monmouth University senior Rachel Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference second team. A mainstay in the midfield for four years, Konowal earned the first all-league honor of her career. In a strong senior campaign, she had career highs in goals (7), assists (10) and points (24). For her career, she has 10 goals, 18 assists and 38 points while recording two defensive saves as part of the defensive corner unit in 76 games.
Konowal scored a goal in Monmouth University’s 2-0 win over Rider in the MAAC semifinal game. It was her seventh goal of the season.
Freshman Caroline McGovern (Council Rock South) contributed an assist in Boston College’s 3-2 loss in overtime to Duke in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships.
Providence senior midfielder Megan Hamilton (Central Bucks South) was a unanimous All-BIG EAST first team selection. It was the second consecutive year she earned first team honors after earning second team recognition in 2014 and 2015. She is one of just three players in program history to earn All-BIG EAST recognition all four years of her career. In addition, she is the 12th player in program history to earn first team accolades in multiple seasons. Hamilton started 17 games in the midfield and collected six points on three goals. She also registered one defensive save. She is ranked 17th all-time on Providence’s career scoring list with 65 points on 27 goals and 11 assists. Her 27 goals are tied for 14th all-time and her 11 assists are tied for 32nd all-time in program history. Hamilton also has been selected as an alternate for the 2017 Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Senior Game, which will be played later this month.
Providence junior defender Corinne Kenney (Central Bucks South) earned All-BIG EAST second team honors. The CB South graduate had an impressive year after missing all of last season with an injury, earning All-BIG EAST honors for the first time in her career. In addition to her role at center back, she also played a key role in the offensive and defensive corner units. She tallied one point this season with an assist in the Friars’ 3-2 victory over Brown. For her career, she has five points on two goals and one assist.
Freshman Bryn Boylan (Central Bucks West) has seen action in all 22 games for a University of North Carolina squad that – as a result of Sunday’s 3-2 win over Princeton – advanced to the NCAA final four for the ninth year in a row. The NCAA semifinals will be held on Friday in Louisville, Ky. No. 6 UNC will face top-seeded UConn in the first semifinal (2 p.m.) while Maryland will face third-seeded Michigan in the other semifinal. Sunday’s win over the Tigers came on the heels of a 4-0 win over Saint Joseph’s on Saturday. Last Sunday, UNC claimed the 20th ACC championship in program history with its 1-0 win over Louisville.
Temple senior Rachael Mueller (William Tennent) was named to the All-BIG EAST second team for the second year in a row. Mueller was the Owls’ leading scorer with six goals and four assists for 16 points. Her six goals included two game winners with one of those coming in overtime for a 3-2 Temple win over Sacred Heart on Sept. 24. Also a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, Mueller was named to the conference’s weekly honor roll on Sept. 18 after scoring twice in the Owls’ 3-1 win at Holy Cross. She started in 17 of 18 games this season and leaves Temple with 25 career goals and five career assists for 55 total points. Later this month, Mueller will play in the Victory Sports tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game after being one of 38 seniors selected from around the country.
Maggie Walsh (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in Gwynedd Mercy’s 9-0 CSAC semifinal win over Immaculata.
Gwynedd Mercy University senior Abigail Gabriel (Souderton) was named to the All-CSAC second team. The Souderton graduate had three goals and two assists and added a pair of defensive saves for her third all-league honor.
Gwynedd Mercy University senior Madison Reiss (Pennridge) earned All-CSAC honorable mention recognition. It was the third all-conference nod for the Pennridge graduate, who has amassed five points on two goals and an assist along with two defensive saves and is a vital cog in the defense.
West Chester junior goalkeeper Marissa Elizardo (North Penn) was named the Athlete of the Week for the
week ending Nov. 5. The North Penn graduate played a crucial part in West Chester’s PSAC Tournament run. She stonewalled her opponents by contributing three shutouts. Elizardo’s effort is a primary reason why the Golden Rams were crowned the PSAC champions. The trio of shutouts came against No. 10 Bloomsburg in the quarterfinals, No. 1 Shippensburg in the semifinals and No. 2 East Stroudsburg in the final. She made a total of 11 saves for the Golden Rams to help earn the championship.
Elizardo recorded three saves in West Chester’s 3-0 win over No. 2 East Stroudsburg last Sunday. In West Chester’s 1-0 upset of No. 1 Shippensburg, Elizardo recorded her fifth shutout of the season, recording five saves in 70 minutes. In West Chester’s 1-0 win over Bloomsburg, Elizardo recorded three saves.
Kristin Donohue (Council Rock South) scored a goal in No. 1 Messiah College’s 5-0 win over No. 11 Trinity College in Sunday’s NCAA third round match. In Saturday’s 3-2 win over Washington & Lee in a second round game, Donohue had an assist. In Messiah’s 2-1 win over Alvernia to clinch the program’s 11th straight MAC Commonwealth title, Shelby Landes (Souderton) recorded two saves.
Lebanon Valley forward Rachel Gorman (Central Bucks South) earned second team All-MAC Commonwealth honors. Her most recent accolade is her second all-conference honor in as many years. The defender totaled nine points on three goals and three assists to go along with a pair of defensive saves. She buried the game winner in a 2-1 win over Stevenson last month.
FOOTBALL
Towson redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Stover (Upper Dublin) was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 29 after leading the Tigers on the game-winning drive in an 18-17 win over No. 23 Delaware. The honor is the second of the season for Stover. He also was honored on Sept. 18 after leading the Tigers on a game-winning drive against Saint Francis.
With the Tigers trailing 14-3 early in the second half against Delaware, Stover led the Tigers on a pair of scoring drives. Late in the third quarter, Stover hooked up with John Tsimis for a 39-yard touchdown. Stover then hit Ellis Knuson for the two-point conversion. Stover executed the four-minute drill in leading the Tigers to the victory. He converted a third down with a three-yard run before getting the Tigers deep into UD territory with a 17-yard run. Facing third-and-inches, Stover came out of a timeout and calmly stepped back and floated a ball into the back corner of the end zone for the 14-yard touchdown to Sam Gallahan. Stover finished the day going 20-of-32 for 187 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 56 yards on eight carries.Stover completed 13-of-23 passing attempts for 140 yards and also rushed or 22 yards and a touchdown in Towson’s 26-14 win over William & Mary on Saturday afternoon. In last Saturday’s 33-30 double overtime loss to No. 7 Elon, Stover threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns. It was the first 300-yard passing game of his career and third game with two touchdown passes.
Senior Alexander Skyrm (Souderton) had eight tackles in Ursinus College’s 40-17 loss at Dickinson on Saturday. The Bears were without injured starting quarterback Thomas Garlick (Quakertown). In last Saturday’s 42-28 loss to Franklin & Marshall, Garlick threw for a career-high 398 yards and two touchdowns.
George Shipp (North Penn) had a strong day on the defensive side of the ball in West Chester’s 27-24 win over Millersville last Saturday, recording nine tackles – including four tackles for a loss of 22 yards. He also had a team-high 2.5 sacks. Mike Class (Pennnridge) scored on a one-yard run.
Sophomore Eric Dzieniszewski (Quakertown) had a team-high seven tackles in No. 25 Shippensburg’s 51-13 win over Seton Hill on Saturday. Junior Josh Lister (Souderton) notched his first collegiate sack.
Senior Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) had eight tackles in Kutztown’s 42-34 win over Slippery Rock in Saturday’s season finale. The Bensalem graduate finished his career with 255, 11th in program history. Josh Lee (Abington) hauled in a touchdown pass. In Kutztown’s 65-0 win over Cheyney last Saturday, Nieves had a team-high six tackles. He also registered a sack.
Widener University junior Vince Char (William Tennent) was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 4. It is the first time this season he has received the honor. Char had a monster game in a 27-6 win against King’s. He recorded six sacks, coming up just 0.5 sacks shy of tying the program’s single-game record. He also recorded seven tackles for a loss and a season-high 13 takedowns overall. The six sacks vaulted him into the top spot in the MAC in the category and were part of an overall effort that saw the Pride deliver 11 QB stops and intercept five passes.
Char recorded a sack in Widener’s 47-13 loss to No. 5/7 Delaware Valley in the Keystone Cup on Saturday. He finished the season with 13.5, the most by a player since 2015.
Sophomore quarterback Michael Marino (Wissahickon) turned in a four-touchdown performance in Chestnut Hill’s 28-3 win over Franklin Pierce University. The game brought to an end the 2017 Collegiate Sprint Football League. He ends the 2017 season with 11 touchdown passes in three straight Chestnut Hill victories. In last Saturday’s win, he totaled 227 yards on a 15-of-21 (.714) and rushed for another eight yards on three carries.
IUP redshirt sophomore cornerback JR Stevens (Neshaminy) was named IUP Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 5. The Neshaminy graduate had another big individual performance as he helped No. 3 IUP to a 36-10 victory at Mercyhurst as the Crimson Hawks improved to 10-0 on the season. The cornerback intercepted two passes and broke up another two as he and the rest of the IUP defense limited he Lakers to just 133 passing yards. Stevens now has six interceptions on the season, and with his 15 pass breakups, he leads all of Division II with 21 total passes defensed. He has a pair of two-interception games and has defensed 13 total passes in the last four games combined. It was his first career IUP weekly award.
MEN’S GOLF
Freshman David Kim (Upper Dublin), who shot a four-over par 74, led La Salle at the City Six Championships. His play on the par-4 holes was superb, finishing tied for second in the field at even par.
MEN’S SOCCER
Freshman John Griffin (Abington) scored in the 72nd minute to propel Cabrini to a 1-0 victory over Keystone College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game last Saturday. It was Griffin’s fourth goal of the season.
La Salle’s Matt Robinson (North Penn) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. He also was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team. Robinson boasted a 3.85 GPA through his time at La Salle and was also a marksman on the field, leading the team in goals (7) and points (19) in the past season. Both were career highs.
Johnny Ciarlante (William Tennent) contributed an assist in La Salle’s 2-0 win over Davidson in the season finale.
Sophomore Brett Miller (Council Rock North) scored a goal in West Chester’s double overtime win over East Stroudsburg in the second round of the Division II NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Shippensburg University junior forward Cole Kropnick (Wissahickon) was named to the 2017 All-PSAC second team. Kropnick is one of just five players in the PSAC this year to score double-digit goals. In 15 matches, he had 10 goals and three assists. Against Holy Family, Kropnick had two goals and two assists for six points. His 10 goals are the most by a Raider since 2013. He tallied game winners against Holy Family, Bloomsburg and Pitt-Johnstown.
Gwynedd Mercy senior Tim Dailey (Abington) was named to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team. He was the lone representative for the Griffins as the senior earned his first honor from the CSAC. The senior co-captain started 16 games at midfield and totaled a goal and an assist. The goal, his first collegiate score, came in the Griffins’ final contest of the year, a 5-1 win over Bryn Athyn.
Freshman Michael Albers (William Tennent) and freshman Sebastian Krysztofowicz (Central Bucks East) each scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 win over Penn College in a NEAC semifinal game last Saturday. In the Nittany Lions’ 1-0 quarterfinal win over Wilson, Albers scored the game’s only goal.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Cabrini senior Marisa Christensen (North Penn) earned All-CSAC first team honors. This is Christensen’s
first all-CSAC honor but was earned as the senior’s play at midfield helped the Cavs both offensively and defensively. The North Penn graduate started all 16 games for the Blue and White, recording 11 shots with eight on goal. Her three shots and two assists gave her the third most points on the team with eight.
Christensen helped anchor the defense in Cabrini’s 2-1 win over second-seeded Centenary in the CSAC semifinals. The Cavalier’s stifling defense limited the Cyclones to five shots with just two coming on goal. The Cavaliers’ offensive unit, which included sophomore Katelyn Gilinger (Springfield Township), kept the pressure on the Centenary backs as the Cavs held a 9-6 advantage in shots.
Drexel junior Shaelyn McCarty (Central Bucks West) earned third team All-CAA honors for the second consecutive season. McCarty tied for second on the squad with four goals. She also finished third on the team in points with 10 after adding two assists. McCarty started and played in all but two games for the Dragons and had the game-winning goal in Drexel’s victory over Loyola Chicago. She is currently in ninth place all-time for career goals and 10th in career points.
Washington and Lee junior midfielder Megan Engeland (Pennsbury) was selected to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference first team. A two-time all conference honoree, Engeland started 15 games for the Generals and led the team with 12 goals and 24 points. Her 12 goals rank fourth in the ODAC while her 24 points is tied for seventh in the league. Engeland also notched a team-high three game-winning goals this season.
McDaniel senior Kristen Upton (Central Bucks South) was named to the Academic All-District II Division III women’s soccer first team presented by CoSIDA. Upton earned her first nod to the team with a 3.92 GPA as of the end of the spring semester. She was one of 15 players selected to the first team. The exercise chemistry major now advances to the national ballot with all of the first team selections from the eight districts for the Academic All-American team. A defender, Upton entered the NCAA tournament having started all 19 games and keying a backline that posted a 1.07 goals-against average and eight shutouts. She also contributed two goals and an assist. A three-time All-Centennial Conference selection, she was a first team selection each of the last two seasons.
Sarah McDonald (Pennsbury) recorded 10 saves and anchored a backline that thwarted attacks by the Hornets in McDaniel’s 1-0 loss to Lynchburg in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday. Upton anchored the defense for the Green Terror, who made their third straight trip to the NCAA tournament. Lynchburg finished with a 28-13 advantage in shots and 11-3 advantage in corner kicks. In last Saturday’s 1-1 tie with Johns Hopkins that was decided in a shootout (4-3 Johns Hopkins), McDonald recorded eight saves. Upton scored during the shootout to knot he score 3-3.
Allegheny College freshman forward Shannon McGuinn (William Tennent) was voted the North Coast
Athletic Conference (NCAC) Newcomer of the Year and also was a first team All-NCAC selection. McGuinn was an offensive force for the Gators during her inaugural season, finishing with the team lead in both goals (8) and points (17). She placed third overall in the NCAC in both categories while her three game-winning goals this season ranked second in the conference. McGuinn had a pair of two-goal games on the year in the team’s 6-1 win over Geneva on Sept. 5 and a 3-0 blanking of Hiram on Oct. 10 while she netted the game winner in a 1-0 overtime decision at Fredonia on Sept. 26. The rookie added goals against Denison on Sept. 23 and at NCAC-champion Wittenberg on Oct. 21. She assisted on the overtime game winner in a 4-3 victory over DePauw on Oct. 14. The Gators won all seven games in which McGuinn recorded at least one point. Previously recognized as the NCAC Player of the Week on Oct. 16, McGuinn is now the fourth player in program history to be named the NCAC Newcomer of the Year.
Saint Joseph’s junior goalkeeper Grace Bendon (Central Bucks West) was named to the 2017 Atlantic 10 All-
Championship team. Helping the Hawks advance to the semifinals of the 2017 A-10 Championship, Bendon posted a .938 save percentage with a 0.50 goals-against average and a shutout. Earning her second straight All-Championship Team honor, Bendon increased her team record for career saves in the A-10 Championship to 35. Bendon capped the year tying for the second most wins in a season with 11. She will enter her senior campaign in 2018 fifth overall in wins (19) and tied for fifth in shutouts (eight).
Bendon made a game-high seven saves in St. Joseph’s 1-0 loss to VCU in the semifinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championships. Lindsay Walder (Upper Moreland) capped her career as part of the first senior class to advance to the A-10 Championships four straight years. In St. Joe’s 1-0 victory at second seed Saint Louis in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Championships, junior Michaela Finneyfrock (Council Rock North) scored the game winner in the 30th minute. Bendon made a game-high nine saves.
Penn State University senior Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Two first team. She will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-American team ballot. The Neshaminy graduated has a 3.71 GPA as a communication science and disorders major. Schafer, a senior forward, has started all 20 matches in 2017 and has 13 points on five goals and three assists this season. In her career, she has played in 92 matches, which includes 73 starts, scored 30 goals and recorded 17 assists. For her work in the classroom, Schafer is a two-time recipient of Academic All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar athletes.
Marissa Sheva (Pennridge) and Schafer both contributed an assist in No. 10 Penn State’s 7-0 win over Stony Brook in Friday’s first round of the NCAA Tournament.
West Chester junior Nikki Caffey (Council Rock South) earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Two squad and is now eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America squad. Caffey, who carries a GPA of 3.98, had a strong year playing on the backline. Caffey also registered an assist on the game-tying goal in the victory over Cal (Pa.).
McKenna Mullin (Neshaminy) played all 110 minutes in goal, recording five big saves in West Chester’s NCAA Tournament opening round game of the NCAA Tournament against Notre Dame College (OH) on Sunday that saw the two teams battle to a 0-0 tie after double overtime. West Chester went on to win 5-4 in PKs, advancing to the Sweet 16. In last Saturday’s 1-0 loss to East Stroudsburg in the PSAC Championship game, Mullin helped West Chester stay scoreless early on, making a diving save to keep the Golden Rams in it. She recorded five saves. In West Chester’s 2-1 win over Gannon in the PSAC semifinals, Linzi Wolfe (Quakertown) played the hero in the 86th minute when she scored the game winner. Mullin had four saves. In the Golden Rams’ 1-0 win over Bloomsburg in the PSAC quarterfinals, Wolfe scored the loan goal of the game in the 75th minute when she headed in a cross. Mullin had to make one save in the victory.
Kutztown junior Alyssa Ryan (Wissahickon) was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District Two team. First team honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team ballot. Ryan was recognized for the first time in her career. A team captain, she has earned PSAC Scholar-Athlete recognition twice, has been a Dean’s List Honoree four times and a D2ADA Academic Achievement Award winner. The Wissahickon graduate has totaled four goals and four assists this season and was named to the All-PSAC second team. The midfielder has started all 20 games and has played in 61 games throughout her career. Ryan is a Biology/Pre-Med major and holds a 3.89 GPA.
Kristina Miller (North Penn) contributed an assist in Kutztown’s 2-1 loss to Notre Dame (OH) in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Region on Friday. In a 1-0 loss to East Stroudsburg in the PSAC semifinals, the KU defense was sparked by sophomore Shea Conway (William Tennent), who made her first start since starting in the midfield last season against Western Washington in the NCAA Final Four.
Gwynedd Mercy University junior goalie Kailey Hopkins (William Tennent) was named to the All-Colonial States Athletic Conference first team. For Hopkins, this is her second straight honor after a second team pick a year ago. She leads the CSAC in goals-against average (0.81 GAA), save percentage (.846) and shutouts (8) while boasting a 10-5-1 regular season record.
Hopkins was named CSAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 29. The junior goalie recorded seven saves for her eighth shutout on the year in Gwynedd’s 3-0 win over Immaculata in the regular season finale that locked the Griffins into the number four playoff seed. It was their seventh win in the last eight games.
Gwynedd Mercy University senior Sarah Nedwick (North Penn) received honorable mention All-CSAC recognition. It is her first all-league honor. The North Penn graduate has six goals and three assists. Nedwick scored a goal while Hopkins recorded 11 saves in net in Gwynedd Mercy’s 4-2 loss at top-seeded Marywood in a CSAC Tournament semifinal contest. In Gwynedd’s 2-1 win over Neumann in a first round contest, freshman Victoria Braeunle (North Penn) scored a goal.
Holy Family University junior Brianna Rock (Bensalem) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season in a vote of the conference’s 14 head coaches. Rock is just the second Holy Family student-athlete to receive the honor multiple times. She also earned All-CACC first team honors for the second consecutive season. Rock has been the nucleus of the offense this season as she set new career marks. Through the regular season, Rock led the CACC in scoring with 39 points off 15 goals and nine assists, both career highs. Her 39 points tied the program’s NCAA era single season record for most points. In 54 career games, Rock has totaled 32 goals, 14 assists and 78 points. She ranks seventh all-time in program history in goals and is currently ninth in points. Eleven of her 32 goals are game-winning scores, which is third among the all-time leaders.
Rock connected on her 16th goal of the season in Holy Family’s 1-0 win over Caldwell University in the CACC quarterfinals. With the goal, Rock broke the program’s NCAA era single season record for most points in a season with 41, breaking the previous mark of 39 set in 2003.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Tyler Chamberlin (Springfield Township) tallied Abright’s only individual win, finishing first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.68 in Albright’s 160-102 loss to Arcadia. He also finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a tie of 2:19.89. In Albright’s 106-94 win over Widener, Chamberlin won two events on the day, starting with a victory in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.00. He then followed that up with a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.34.
Sophomore Ogden Leyens (Upper Dublin) finished third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:56.83 in Gettysburg’s double-dual meet on Saturday. Gettysburg defeated Messiah 182-79 while topping Susquehanna 207-54. In last Saturday’s 164-98 win over Washington College, Leyens finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.67. He also was part of the winning 200 free relay.
Sophomore Jeff Beyer (Wissahickon) finished first in the 500 free (4:45.18) and 1000 free (10:07.01) in Shippensburg’s 105-100 loss to Clarion. Both were PSAC qualifying times. Beyer also was part of the first place 200 free relay (1:28.28).
Senior Jacob Schellinger (North Penn) took third in both the 50 free (22.74) and 200 butterfly (2:04.01) in Arcadia’s 115-88 loss at Franklin & Marshall on Friday night.
Juniors Maxwell Coulter (Pennridge) an Travis Venables (Pennsbury) were part of the 200 medley relay that earned the silver medal with a time of 1:40.54 in Ursinus College’s 57-38 win over McDaniel on Saturday. Junior Thomas Bantley (Upper Dublin) and sophomore Daniel Powell (Central Bucks East) finished 2-3 in the 1000 free with Bantley (10:47.06) edging Powell (10:53.98). In last Saturday’s tri-meet sweep of York (109-93) and St. Mary’s (158-43), Venables took home a pair of first place finishes. Venables anchored the winning 400 free relay (3:16.06) after winning the 50 free (22.15). Coulter had a pair of second place finishes as part of the 400 medley relay and then in the 200 breast (2:17.93).
West Chester sophomore Quinton Mitchell (North Penn) finished first in the 3-meter diving championship with a score of 245.80 in a match against Rowan. He finished second in the one-meter event with a score of 258.15. In last Saturday’s Thomas Murphy Invitational, Evan Sherkness (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was part of West Chester’s second place 200 medley team that posted a time of 1:33.99. Mitchell recorded a score of 198.30 in the 3-meter diving event.
Sophomore Devon Polak (Upper Dublin) was part of the 200 medley relay that finished second in Bloomsburg’s 128-76 win over Edinboro.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore Rachel Samson (Council Rock North) chalked up a win in the 400 IM with a time of 4:53.42 in Arcadia’s 116-89 win over Franklin & Marshall on Friday night. In last Saturday’s 160-101 win over Albright, Samson was part of the 400 free relay that combined for a pool record time of 3:47.40. She finished first in the 200 IM (2:20.06) and was second in the 200 freestyle (2:01.98) and 200 breaststroke (2:42.07.
Olivia DeStefano (North Penn) highlighted La Salle’s tri-meet with Rider and Delaware on Saturday with three first place finishes. The North Penn graduate took first in the 100 back, touching the wall in 58.06 seconds. She also won the 50 free, clocking in at 24.66 seconds. DeStefano was part of the 400 free relay team that placed first in 3:43.69 and the second place 200 medley relay that finished in 1:49.13. Sydney Szopo (Upper Moreland) placed first in the one-meter diving event with a score of 250.00. She took second in the three-meter with a 229.70.
Junior Haley Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) finished third in the 100 backstroke in Towson’s 135-127 win at William and Mary.
Penn State senior Tommie Dillione (Council Rock North) finished fifth in the 100 free with a time of 51.17 at the Minnesota Quad Duals.
Eve Kosten (North Penn) was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay that posted a time of 1:34.72 in the University of Buffalo’s 161-139 road victory over Ohio last Saturday. In the University of Buffalo’s 218-82 win over Toledo, Kosten posted a season-best time of 53.01 in the 100 freestyle.
Freshman Rebecca Warren (Council Rock North) captured goal in the 1000 free (11:07.53) in No. 13 Ursinus College’s 57-37 Centennial Conference victory at McDaniel on Saturday. Sophomore Margrethe Leis (Springfield Township) was second in the 100 free with a time of 57.35. Freshman Katelyn Moore (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 1:11.62 in the 100 breast.
Sammy Grogan (Council Rock North) won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:36.12 in Widener’s double dual match with Messiah and Hood last Saturday. She finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.78.
Theresa Dempsey (Council Rock North) finished third in the 200 freestyle in Lock Haven’s tri-meet with Millersville and Cedar Crest.
West Chester’s Emma O’Neill (Abington) finished third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:40.60 while Jenna Fox (Council Rock South) finished third in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:58.20 at the Thomas Murphy Invitational.
Freshman Leah Barrett (Council Rock South) earned a win in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.50 in Millersville’s sweep of Lock Haven an Cedar Crest last Saturday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Chestnut Hill sophomore Nicole Yang (Wissahickon) was named to the 2017 CACC All-Academic Team. In order to be named to a CACC All-Academic Team, recipients must have participated in a CACC-sponsored championship sport and must be at least a sophomore. The nominee must have been a student-athlete at their current school for at least two semesters and must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher through the preceding semester.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cabrini freshman Steph Judkins (Pennridge) was named Mid-Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year and also
earned a spot on the All-Mid-Atlantic Team. Judkins was named Colonial States Athletic Conference Player and Rookie of the Year after leading the Cavaliers and the CSAC with 427 kills. The freshman ranks 33rd in Division III in kills, and her 3.71 kills per set ranks 48th in the nation. Defensively, Judkins had 285 digs to finish second on the team.
Judkins was named the Colonial States Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 29. This was the sixth time Judkins was named CSAC Player of the Week. The rookie posted a pair of double-doubles while leading Cabrini to a 3-1 week, totaling 36 kills and 32 digs on the week. Judkins paired 10 kills and 14 digs in a 3-1 victory at Notre Dame of Maryland before posting 10 kills, 11 digs and three block assists in a 3-2 loss to No. 19 Stevenson. Judkins closed out the regular season with a team and conference leading 417 kills, a number that also ranks among the nation’s best.
Judkins contributed seven kills while freshman Morgan Collito (Council Rock North) paired four kills and five digs in Cabrini’s 3-1 loss at No. 25 Otterbein in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament on Friday. The loss ended the Blue and White’s season with a record of 29-7, tied with the 2013 team for most wins in program history. In Cabrini’s 3-1 win over Neumann to win its fifth consecutive CSAC championship, Collito had 10 kills and 11 digs, and Judkins had 15 digs. In Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Notre Dame of Maryland in the CSAC semifinals, Collito led the Cavaliers with 10 kills and nine digs.
Gwynedd Mercy junior Cassie McCarney (William Tennent) was named to the All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team. She was the lone Griffin honored, and it was her first citation from the conference. McCarney was third on the team in aces (36) and fourth on kills (80) while playing in all 28 matches this year.
Ursinus sophomore Miranda Foster (Neshaminy) was named to the All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team. The middle blocker turned in a strong season for the Bears, leading the team in blocks (32) and hitting percentage (.167) while tying for second in kills (147). Foster added 49 digs, eight assists and six aces. Foster produced at least five kills in 18 of the Bears’ 26 matches in 2017. She had a career-high 13 kills in a five-set loss to Penn State Berks and recorded 10 kills on a .600 hitting percentage in the Bears’ 3-0 sweep of Penn State Abington.
Kutztown University freshman Holly Owen (Hatboro-Horsham) was named he PSAC Southeast Division Athlete of the Week after posting a combined 28 kills and a .397 attack percentage in KU’s matches against Edinboro and Slippery Rock. In a loss to Edinboro, Owen had a team-high 10 kills and a .297 attack percentage, posting double-digit kills for the second time in 2017. She followed that performance with a season-high 18 kills, hitting a blistering .472 in KU’s 3-1 win over Slippery Rock. For the season, the Hatboro-Horsham graduate leads the Golden Bears in attacking percentage, hitting .184 with 152 kills in her first season. On the defensive side, Owen ranks third on KU with 40 total blocks, an average of .48 blocks per set. As a freshman, she has played in 24-of-27 matches and 84-of-96 total sets.
Owen had 11 kills in Kutztown’s 3-0 win over Salem on Friday. In Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to East Stroudsburg, Owen had 11 kills.
Junior Bridget Terrel (Central Bucks East) notched a career-high 12 digs in Shippensburg’s 3-2 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.
Senior Lydia Redman (Council Rock North) led the defensive effort with eight digs and also had one ace to move her season total to 25 in East Stroudsburg’s 3-0 win over Cheyney on Saturday.
Jaime Bonner (William Tennent) tied her season high with a 14-kill performance in Holy Family’s 3-0 win over Wilmington University on Wednesday. In last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Goldey-Beacom College, Bonner finished with 11 kills and three block assists. In Holy Family’s 3-2 win over Georgian Court, Bonner had 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .306.
WRESTLING
Elizabethtown senior Philip Torresani (Hatboro-Horsham) took fourth place in the 125-pound bracket at the Ursinus Fall Brawl on Saturday. Torresani racked up a major decision and two decisions before dropping a 3-1 decision to Navy’s Logan Reaster, the top seed, in the semifinals. Torresani bounced back with a 3:46 pin of WPI’s Michael Aquino in the consolation semis but fell to Apprentice’s Kolin Johnson in an effort to claim third place.
York sophomore Dylan Nuttall (Harry S Truman) finished sixth at 125 at the Ned McGinley Invitational at King’s College last Saturday. The Spartans finished second to NYU in the event.
Bloomsburg sophomore Bruce Graeber (Neshaminy) rebounded with a 10-8 decision after falling in the consolation bracket at 285 pounds at the Clarion Open last Sunday. He followed up with a 3-2 decision over Kent State’s Billy Biola. Graeber advanced to the round of eight in the consolation bracket with a 6-2 decision over Penn State’s Bryce Hanley. He continued his streak with a 6-4 win by decision over Utah Valley’s Ben Andrew Orem. He then dropped his consolation round of four match to Buffalo’s Ian James by a 4-2 decision.
